【Education of North Koreans】Exposing the real situation of education in North Korea
North Korea provides 12 years of voluntary education to its citizens. In addition, the government distributed free textbooks and school bags to students, and parents were punished if they did not send their children to school. As a result, by 1989, all adults had completed secondary education. Illiteracy, which had been 75% of the country, quickly dropped to 0% in 1990, meaning that all Koreans were literate and had reached secondary education; the school-age enrollment rate rose from less than 35% to 100% today. 2014 onwards, the school system consists of one year of preschool, five years of primary education and six years of secondary education. After graduating from secondary school, students are required to serve in the military before being admitted to university, while about 20% of the country's high school students are able to go on to university. Education in North Korea is administered under a centralized system of education management. The state is responsible for investing in and managing various education departments at all levels, and the central education administration department is the Ministry of Education, which includes the Bureau of Political Thought and Education, the Bureau of Teacher Training and Education, the Bureau of General Education Guidance, the Bureau of Specialized School Guidance, the Bureau of University Guidance, the Bureau of Factory University Guidance, the Bureau of Kim Il Sung General University Guidance, the Bureau of Planning, the Bureau of Admissions, the Bureau of Administrative Organization, the Bureau of Financial Logistics, the Bureau of Educational Methods, the Bureau of Scientific Research Guidance, the Bureau of External Education, the Bureau of Sports and the Office of the Manager. Korean students study three main subjects: language, science, and history, as well as the biographies of past leaders and the main ideas advocated by Kim Il Sung. At the same time, anti-American and anti-Japanese ideas are often integrated into education. Mathematics classes would ask questions such as, "If three Korean People's Army soldiers killed 30 American soldiers, how many American soldiers did each People's Army soldier kill on average? Science education is highly valued in North Korea, and literature and history subjects are considered less important. In the university entrance exams, in addition to "Revolutionary History" and Foreign Language, the other three papers were also science subjects: mathematics, chemistry and physics. Only the best students are admitted to the most prestigious universities in the country. At university, Korean students must learn English and a second foreign language - usually Russian or Chinese - so that they can usually use Chinese to talk to younger people when buying things in Korea.
