With a few simple supports in place for choice time, students learn to manage their emotions and take turns-and the whole classroom runs more smoothly.

Great video. I was wondering if I can use this strategy with my two year old students?

Two's can surely benefit from practicing some of these strategies. You'll want to be sure to adjust wait times so they can be successfully met at the start (short!). As toddlers develop these skills you can slowly increase how long they may have to wait to join a center or take a turn with a toy. Most importantly, they will need to learn to trust that their turn is coming soon!

It's important to have caring adults nearby to support children when they demonstrate difficulty following the routine. It’s okay for young children to feel upset or frustrated when they aren’t ready to share. Our job as teachers is to be there to support them through those big feelings and help them trust that they will get a turn in time. It sometimes helps to guide the child in finding a different place to play while waiting. Sometimes the teacher can offer to play with the child somewhere else or mention which center they are playing in. Playing with the teacher is often a big draw!
