Oh my God, the amount of magic with this Elgar concerto... A mixture of anxiety, questioning, fear, desire, joy and hope... I can imagine the hills of the English countryside with this music. And the concerto performer added a wonderful feeling with her charming playing, she owned my heart with her melodious instrument... Thank you, Elgar. And thanks to the orchestra for the interesting performance. I follow from Damascus❤

Elgar had struggled to rise from his lower middle class background (and a Catholic in Protestant England)to become the voice of empire. His music embodies the majesty and nobility of that great image, to be heard time and again in his great “nobilamente” themes. But the carnage of World War I showed that nobility to have feet of clay. So the cello concerto, his last major work though he lived another 14 years, is a farewell elegy to a world that not only had gone, but that perhaps had had a hollow heart. All that sorrow, with great reserve, is expressed in this masterpiece.

I've been waiting decades to hear an Elgar with as much emotional power as du Pre brought it, and here it is. Plus, you bring your own subtlety of phrasing and thoughtfulness that's all your own. Bravo! Looking forward to hearing your other videos and new album.

Written in 1919 this was Elgar's deep lament for the first World War - his music having been first recognized by the German public.

@Giovanni Pierre Elgar lived in Germany during this period, after being unsuccessful back in England and he met a music publisher named Augustus Jaeger, who took him under his wing and got him noticed. Back in the UK, he was still a nobody however. He later dedicated the 9th Enigma variation to him. Elgar’s music, despite being known today as being quintessentially British, was actually influenced heavily by that of Brahms, Wagner and Schumann (his three favourite composers), more than any British composer that ever lived before him.

@@mogmason6920 No wonder I so love the Elgar cello: Brahms' 1st Symphony has no equal for me in art. Thanks for the information. My pen name is Bruun. I was astonished to see a town or village called 'Bruun' as my wife and I traveled through Switzerland - it was located amidst the formidable mountains on a lake! I then dreamed of living there for a number of years.

Agreed, probably due to nerves. Some very minor problems of intonation appeared very occasionally in the first movement. However, intonation in the second movement and onwards was as close to perfection as is possible - and, most important of all, the 'cellist's musical interpretation was nothing short of sublime.

Du Pré - so sadly lost to us just when she was in the prime of her career. Her London performance marking the Russian invasion of Czechoslovakia was prophetically marked by the breaking of a Cello string during the performance - a sign of much to come. We live in a world now replete with such talent - so fortunate. Love you Anastasia but miss Jacqueline. It would have been a privilege to enjoy old age with her.

She played it with great emotion, power and technique from start to finish.

Well done. To be overly effusive in a piece like this, which is a temptation, one can easily mask its subtleties and depths. Yet in this rendition I hear some beautiful phrasing and an ear for the orchestration. This piece evokes in me the attitude of a man whose strength has fled, or has long since atrophied, yet by grace has summoned one last utterance of his deepest love.
