Oh never noticed that facade before. Hopper is great. Nothing wasted in these compositions

I never noticed that big block of a windowless building in the background until today. Who builds like that?! Lol

My favorite artist to come out of America. Such a talent who makes you feel his scenes, always from a distance but I feel like I've witnessed the scenes in my own life..

Nice appraisal and presentation. I like this painting and Hopper in general. Have you seen the animated versions on social media recently? An idea: Has the man finished his employment and therefore cleared his desk. Are these his last moments in that particular employ and building as he contemplates the next chapter of a working life not yet reached retirement age?

No I haven't, but oh true! Its not clear whether its the start or end of his time there which would give some direction to the meaning.

So we all know the name Edward Hopper and recognize his paintings and etchings . But why did Hopper's art achieve the lofty place we now give it ? Was it pure genius talent or just like every other artist the luck of the draw and being plucked out of the crowd by a person who had the ability to project his art into the main stream of American art we all cant give it enough praise for being a great artist. That's part of the real story of being an artist we don't know about but its important to realize that did happen for Hopper like all the other artist we recognize as great Today and maybe for a few more years to come. Time will tell !

Good questions to ponder! Sometimes its good to look at art without the “context glasses” and just see it for what it is.
@michaelmoffett8966 ай бұрын
@@arthistorystorytime Interesting term "context glasses" which is almost exactly what we as humans do when we observer something we don't fully understand , full or in part etc. We bring to the art our own interpretation of the art from our own personal history of all the things we have experienced in our life's . whether it was good or bad , happy or sad painfully or enjoyable and use those personal experiences to interpreted the work of art on our own very personal terms . a 14 year old surfer from Hawaii will see it totally different then say a 90 year old New Yorker who rides the subway ever day if they dare. thanks for your conversations on art its important keep it up. Though you might find this interesting Ivan Karps interview with Barbra Lee Diamonstein 1978 Karp is one of the main art gallery owners in the beginning of the New York art scene.

@@michaelmoffett896 Thanks for that, will check out the interview. And yes! that's one of those glorious things about art, everyone's own life is a filter to how they see the art, or really anything that pops up on the life journey.

@@arthistorystorytime I agree perception is our reality whether true or false . How do you select the artist you decide to showcase ? would love to hear your analysis of Philip Guston's work seems to be so relative to todays events metaphorically speaking all the usually subjects are in play i think. Keep up the good work love it thanks MM

Great video, as always. Enjoyed the “brought to you by” segment as well! For a second I was worried I was going to see another awkward plug for better help “You can see hoper’s desire to portray the loneliness of modern life…we all feel lonely…that’s why I use better help!”

hahaha! exactly why I made up my own sponsor. Was tempted to lightly make fun of the typical YT sponsor song and dance 😅 But for real though! I actually did use better help years ago, mehh it was aight I guess. #NOTsponsored

This painting has always reminded me of Tacoma's Hilltop neighborhood as I assume it looked in the 1950s. Kind of like you said, the image evokes a palpable feeling of loneliness and isolation. It's really something. (On a side note, I quit coffee three weeks ago too). :) :(
@arthistorystorytime6 ай бұрын
Interesting. I see some similar buildings in that neighborhood. Woo Hoo! Stay strong! I'm over a week without any, but took 3 weeks to slowly decrease the caffeine consumption to green tea levels before quitting all together. Happy to say I don't even want it now. 🤷🏻♀️

Great review, as always. I'm a big Hopper fan but the lack of windows in this painting has always un-nerved me. Those are huge-ass openings! You can't keep out the weather and forget about the bugs! It's no wonder the subject is alone in that office. This was an interesting choice by Hopper and he was probably asked about it many times. We know he can paint windows, as evidenced by Nighthawks, so it wasn't lack of skill. If you can get past the lack of windows it is a very calming painting to look at. If.
@steveb41476 ай бұрын
Its a new building construction and they ran out of money for the windows. Actually I think I remember someone suggesting to me that the lack of windows in his paintings tells us of the open space between our inner world and the outer world. The protection of windows is just an illusion.
