Edward Kenway - Between The Bars (An Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag Tribute)

Happy Birthday Edward Kenway! One of the things I love most about AC4 is the small personal story at the center of a lot epic backdrops and events. Edward's alcoholism isn't explicitly called out much in the game, but serves as kind of an undercurrent to pretty much all his behavior. This is my attempt to capture and pay tribute to that "quiet core" of the story, and to combine the love of one of my favorite games and favorite artists. I hope you all enjoy it!

This was a very nice tribute, Loomer, well done! Edward is definitely one of the most well-written characters, not just in Assassin's Creed but I think in the gaming world in general. It's good to see a worthwhile tribute has been made to celebrate this awesome character!

+CJ Ware Absolutely. I hope that if they ever do a more modern AC game set after Syndicate, we'll have an addiction mechanic or something, like during the opium wars or maybe during the Vietnam war. You need to find dealers and not get spotted during the deal, and gather enough opium/heroin to regain your health or maybe a second bar, like a sanity bar or something. Maybe I'm going too far here. It doesn't need to be a gameplay mechanic, but I definitely want to see more flawed protagonists again. Edward was such a great guy, I loved him. He is by far the best protagonist of the series IMO, trumping even Ezio in my book. Imagine a great guy, skilled and disciplined, funny and witty, extremely intelligent, but like Edward he's an addict - not to alcohol, but to something else. Maybe it's opium or heroin, maybe it's something else, I don't know, but it would be cool if he finally clashed with his duties at the brotherhood, gets alienated by them and he dabbles in Templar circles.

CJ Ware Unfortunately they'll probably never do a story centered or involving heavy drug use, especially opioids because - as we all know - sex and drugs are way worse than excessive violence. MGS3 and MGS4 had additional bars that acted as stamina/psyche bars. If they're actually trying to redefine the series with the next AC game as they claim they're doing, they might actually change the way we play AC. Imagine a stamina system. I mean it is pretty weird how your character never tires or gets slower. Combining this with a game centered around keeping your stamina/psyche in check would be neat, and the drug thing could be especially interesting. You can choose to ignore the withdrawal effects, but the screen will change, colors will be muted, lights will be extremely bright, darks will be extremely dark, you can't use eagle vision longer than a second or so because you cannot concentrate, and you climb and run slower to the point where eventually, you're gonna get exhausted and need to refill your stamina with some consumable. Also, in such a state, you're unfit to fight more than one or two people, maybe even unfit to fight at all. Ahh the ideas. I've longed for such a system since MGS4.

Good stuff Loomer! I miss the good ol' days playing Black Flag, I got Platinum on PS3 and on PS4 and played the Multiplayer a ton...I also met so many amazing people in the community too. Pity none of that is in Ubisoft's visions anymore.

Edward was great but mistreated by Ubisoft by killing him off too soon just to make Haytham be a Templar and Connor to exist. Edward has the potential to have a great trilogy.
