Edward Loper : African American Painter is a film is based on a 1998 oral interview.
Edward Loper, Sr. is one of Delaware's most celebrated cultural figures. Born on the east side of Wilmington, Delaware. Loper worked for the Works Progress Administration Art Project, and then took a job at the Allied Kid leather tanning factory, where he continued painting after working hours. In the late 1940s he became a full-time art instructor and painter.
This film was made possible with funding provided by the Delaware Heritage Commission, Delaware Humanities Forum, Hagley Museum and Library, and the Longwood Foundation.

He was the most amazing teacher and mentor I could have ever had. I owe so much of who I am today, to Mr. Loper.

Now this is the best interview I've seen so far, not JUST because of Loper's immense insight and knowledge, but because of his interviewer; she has done her research, one senses she already appreciates or has considered his work and what he has to say, yet she isn't trying to impose her personality or her knowledge into the space, she isn't making it seem like two friends sitting down for a chin-wag, she understands what this is, she asks her questions, opens up the conversation then listen, really listens. This is a dying art.

Phenomenal and important American artist. His paintings are gorgeous, especially his later work’s featuring “fractured realism”. Hard to believe he was not (is not) a household name on the American art scene. So much garbage art is pushed on the public and heralded as being so much more than it is. Edward Loper, Sr, is an American treasure. His works will live on forever.
