Hewitt collection
Through their friendships with artists, Vivian and the late John Hewitt, built an important collection of African American art. The work was for a long time in their home, which doubled as a gallery. Eventually the collection was acquired by Bank of America and moved to the Harvey B. Gant Center for African American Culture, Charlotte, North Carolina. Artists in the collection include Charles Alston, Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, Ernest Crichlow, Jonathan Green, Eugene Grigsby, Jacob Lawrence, AnnTanksley, Henry O.Tanner and Hale Woodruff.
In this documentary, art is shown and talked about by Mrs. Hewitt, artists Ann Tanksley, Jonathan Green, Eugene Grigsby and Kenkeleba Gallery director Corinne Jennings, accompanied by a music score by Pheeroan akLaff. Here at Umaxxi, the documentary is by Charles Martin, who teaches Comparative Literature at Queens College, City University of New York, and regularly exhibits at June Kelly Gallery.

Dr. Eugene Grigsby was a personal mentor of mine he introduced me to New York artist Camille Billops that meeting opened my eyes to a new way of thinking about my art.Dr. Grigsby said Richard Your Art is original but, even more than that you have a natural ability to present a completed work of art with exceptional framing ready to hang on one's wall.Thank you so much for keeping his legacy alive!

I love the art collection. Thank you for sharing. I'm a collector of Elizabeth Catlett. I met Ms. Catlett in the early 80's and began collection her art. I was so impressed with her.

i absolutely love this. I agree with the young man pointing out the lack of African-American art in major Museums. Livng in Nyc I think that's one of the reasons I was never enthused about revisiting any of the museums there. I never felt like I could relate to anything other than the African exhibits and while they were impressive they still weren't fully relatable. i appreciated the diversity and history of the art I did see I just wouldve love to see outside Harlem.
