A great double feature with “who’s afraid of Virginia wolf” would be “Make Way for Tomorrow”. That’s on the understanding that one is a glutton for dark, dark melodrama-on-steroids emotions; you’ll be sick for weeks from emotional overload. But if you’re into that sort of thing, and like looking into emotional abysses, that’s the way to go. I suppose if that doesn’t finish you off, then “Requiem for a Dream” to top it all off.

Goodfellas is well acted but it has 1 major flaw Scorsese avoids mafia politics that's why I like Godfather movies And Casino over Goodfellas.He makes all the killings in Goodfellas look random there was some serious political stuff going on there,Guys in Goodfellas were Lucchesi family,Billy Bats was Gambino in Gotti's crew Lucchesi & Gambino families had some tension at that time close to mob war when Gotti killed Castalano made it look like Lucchesi hit because of tension.Scorsese ignores all of that in Goodfellas he gets into politics better in Casino with hole skim operation and stuff.

You can see it in his filmography. He purposely takes on challenging roles in movies that aren’t necessarily destined for big box office. I believe he has stated he prefers roles that are challenging opposed to taking a big check for a blockbuster.

Tampopo is just phenomenal. It's one of those films that's best seen with a large audience, if nothing more than just to see their reaction to a particular scene. The whole movie is structured like a meal, with a main course and side dishes. Absolutely brilliant and hilarious.

Most of the stuff Stanley Kubrick and Alfred Hitchcock did is pretty good. I don't get all the hype around Casablanca but it's still a good watch. I could go on for ages, and I'm 21 by the way.

Sometime ago I had heard that Ed Norton had said that "Ruggles of Red Gap" was one of his favorite films and I took the opportunity to record it from TCM. He's right - it became one of my all time favorite films and I watch it at least once a year. Aside from showcasing Charles Laughton's immense talent it also includes the famous recitation of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address by Laughton which then became forever associated with him. If you haven' t seen this wonderful movie I urge you to seek it out and enjoy it!

it's not about that. Picks reflect one's OVERALL knowledge of cinema. The cultist who has seen "The Fight Club" thirty times becomes stagnant like a puddle with dirty rainwater.

I didn't say it's about popular vs. obscure. I said if a guy picks "The Fight Club" as his favorite movie which he has seen fifty times, but only goes to the movies once in a while, he/she is basically in a shell. Just yesterday I watched a "Variety" interview with Gaspar Noe. Among his favorite films are "Taxi Driver" and "2001." This I read in another interview. In the "Variety" interview he says he hated "Stare Wars" (which one?) and that he walked out on "Black Panther after about 20 minutes. Now, "Taxi Driver" and "2001" are in my top 10, while on the other hand, I'm NOT a Star Wars fan, and I have zero interest in seeing "Black Panther." Now, this tells me Mr. Noe has extensive knowledge of world cinema, though that alone does not make him a "good" filmmaker.

In the same way that Edward Norton singles out 'King of Comedy' as one of Scorsese's underrated best, I'd single out 'Leaves of Grass' as one of Norton's underrated best. I understand what people see in his performances in AHX & Primal Fear, but to me he really takes flight with Leaves of Grass. It's exceptional work & my favourite of Ed Norton's--right up there with Birdman as the best work he's ever done.

But he has a little sandpile of performances that stop me in my tracks, & while FC is very good it's not in the little sandpile haha. IMO. I also thought he was a standout in a cast of standouts in Moonrise Kingdom.

I'm horrible at making lists like this, way too many amazing movies with their own unique quality that I'd tear my hair out to say which is better, but No Country for Old Men pops in my head as number one to me. It's themes of death, violence and fate, the acting with Mr. Bardem bringing the most ominous antagonist I've ever read to to the screen flawlessly and the fact it's my favorite directing bros adapting from one of my favorite authors ever makes it a perfect film imo.
