India was so poor. Look at the children they don't even have clothes to wear. Thank God we are free now but we should not take our freedom for granted. We must be united otherwise again the history would repeat.

Look at the dresses both of the Maharajahs/ British Officers. On the other hand , look at the inferior dress of the Indians over whom they ruled. What a contrast/ discrimination ! Shame on the ruling class (both Muslims & Hindu rulers )to enjoy themselves while the ruled suffered every day.

The British did not 'take' the local ruler's elephants at all. They belonged to her! That local state had ceremonial elephants before the British ever arrived, they kept them during the British Raj. They only lost them after independence, when Nehru's socialist Indian state acquired all the local rulers' (of every local state) wealth and they couldn't afford things like ceremonial elephants anymore. No Rolls-Royces and thousands of servants either. They mostly became impoverished - thanks to the Indian state. So you're talking rubbish.

KEEP YOUR IRRELEVANT SHIT TO YOURSELF . NOT NEEDED HERE . RAISE YOUR ISSUE AT SOME RELEVANT PLACE REGARDING EMPLOYMENT AND SUBSIDIES . ONE MORE THING YOUR COMMENT IS CONTRADICTORY IN ITSELF YOU ARE SAYING HINDU GOVT IS CAPITALIST BECAUSE ITS SELLING EVERYTHING TO BUSINESSMEN AND SOCIALIST ALSO BECAUSE 80% INDIANS ARE DEPENDENT ON SUBSIDIES. AND ANOTHER THING YOU SAW DIGNITY IN MAHARAJA BUT FAILED TO SEE POOR PEOPLE'S PLIGHT.

Only the Brits could have thought that the prices and their elites made for a glamorous shot. The rest of the country was facing famine, small pox,and dire poverty. I was disgusted watching this. Historical yes but the undercurrent was nauseating!
@wayinfront1

India ''was facing famine, small pox,and dire poverty'' for hundreds and even thousands of years before the British arrived. It was only after their arrival that you got the introduction of proper hospitals (mainly from mid 19thC onwards), sanitary and other infrastructure like the railways, bridges etc. Remember there was famine, smallpox and poverty in Britain too, for various reasons, including climate-related (large volcanic explosions for example, blotted out the sun around 1816, led to failed harvests in Europe, extreme cold and famine), and the fact that smallpox inoculation only started in the early 19thC. In general, the British raised India to a far higher degree of civilisation. India's main problem has always been huge over-population. Don't blame the British for that. Read 'Mother India' for the truth about Indians under British rule in the 1930s.

When the British arrived they found 100 different states and tribes warring against each other - they forged a single central authority which became The Republic of India. They built New Delhi, founded Calcutta & Madras, and created the world's 2nd biggest railway network. They built Asia's first museum, started India's first newspaper, banned Sati & human sacrifice - they are always maligned by most Indians, but they did more good than bad.
