Frank Summerlin Salman Rushdie said it at 15:46. However I did quote it incorrectly. Rather than "emphasis the affect", I changed it to "estimate the influence".

“Classic. And very insightful.” Really? Two intellectuals lamenting the ignorance of uncultured Americans is about as about as cliche as it gets. As I recall, it wasn’t American ignorance which forced Rushdie into hiding for a decade just a few years after this was recorded.

The refusal to allow the Palestinians the right to represent themselves is the crucial issue here. I find Edward Said extremely adorable,...and well,....if he were still alive...I would try to reach him just to answer the question "Who represents the Palestinian People?"... *It is You* ,..exactly like every single Palestinian person, including myself.....we are very much made out of the same mould, we speak in a modest, emotional manner and yet we are intensely eccentric in our body language....awkward and vulnerable.... My favourite E.S quote from this vid: "There is a profound irreducible injustice on the one side (The Palestinian side) and for the need to get acknowledgment of that fact in some institutional way."

@tarekj59512 жыл бұрын
@Evan Davis by writing a horribly written book with no historical proof ? Yes. There’s no proof that anything in the satanic verses is true. Imagine this. Now you think that my prophet wanted fame and to be some kind of leader or an iconic figure of some sort right ? I don’t think that but let’s say you thought that. Why would someone seeking to do those things butcher his message and say it was from Satan ? That wouldn’t be convincing to followers at all. And there’s simply no way Muhammad wouldn’t have recognized a different message. Also the only “evidence “ of satanic verses comes from a supposed Hadith and several hadiths are fabricated that’s why we don’t follow hadiths.There are false hadiths because there are some people who faked being Muslim to tarnish the religion. For example , two Arab Christian’s faked being Muslim so that they can attempt to steal the prophets body from his grave. Look I read Rushdies book from cover to cover. Nothing in it was true or had any evidence. If there was concrete evidence ,Islam would’ve lost many followers.

I don't think this interview has been, even REMOTELY, concerned about Islam or the Islamic world, I think this is more about the Palestinian people and Edward Said's experience as a Palestinian and his connection to Palestinians displaced from their land. I think this obsession with religion really has to stop. This interview is almost entirely a discussion of his book and the plight of the Palestinian people, who have been maltreated and misrepresented in the most heinous of ways, in coming to terms with their sense of identity. I do not understand when and where he has blamed the West, he has been utterly fair in his analysis of media and literature. However, it is true that western governments have created this orientalist dialogue to talk about the east and arabs. Have you seen this interview? Really?
@lqacwaz4708 жыл бұрын
+Zahra Aamer The interview assumes you know late Said's position at that time... One is assumed to have read 'Orientalism' at least and understood what Ed really tries to say there (which he says! It does not have coded messagas a la - say - 'The Da Vinci Code' !!) I think that is *very* fair. I love books and interviews and speeches and lectures that don't insult the audience by talking *down* tp them.
