Before we feel too sorry for Bertie, one of his amours actually was tossed into an asylum until the end of her days. That was done with the consent of her male relatives to help minimize the scandal of her adultery with the Prince. Women pay the higher price for carnal indiscretions. In the Victorian Age, that was price was particularly brutal.

You would think from this episode that Alix never got to travel (aside from visits to relatives in northern Europe). In 1868-69 she went with Bertie on a six month tour that took her to Austria, the Crimea, Greece to visit her brother, and to Egypt to dine with the Khedive and inspect his harem. The Lord Randolph in this episode was Winston Churchill's father. His title was merely a courtesy to a younger son of a duke, and did not prevent him from sitting in the House of Commons. He died when Winston was 20 years old.

Yes, we are horrified and angered quite rightly by this. Today, thank heavens, people who do this are rightly hounded and despised. I believe in future people who do this will be prosecuted.
@alecblunden86155 жыл бұрын
Agreed, the standards of the day are not ours, but tigers have an uncomfortable habit of eating people. Most tiger hunts were to kill known man killers and to keep the population under control. Most of the locals preferred the hunts to being eaten - they were funny like that.

@@Romcom356 "Souls"? Neither the mainstream Greeks nor the Hebrews believed there was such a thing - only the " breath of life". This concept was dreamt up by Plato as his mechanism for the human to transcend the abyss between the "real" spiritual world of his impersonal god and the "unreal" material world. It is dualism at its most irrational and stupid.

@@Romcom356 Many people don't accept that humans have "Souls." Of the people who do believe in "Souls," many don't accept that animals have them. @123pailin9 жыл бұрын
+Stephen Szucs She wasn t. She had serious issues due to her isolated upbringing (Kensington system). Then history repeated herself. All the hanoveraian kings had issues with their heirs. Victoria was disconnected from reality and lived a life of leisure in her remote castles, all this under the disguise of grief and dignified behaviour. Everything achieved during her reign was done despite her not because of her. She was an odd mixture of grandeur and pettiness. She could be enthralling and charming at times but mostly was a grumpy old bag......

+Stephen Szucs Monarchs have often been at odds with their heirs. Consider Alexander and Philip, Frederick of Prussia and his father, and George III and George IV. Supposedly, the crowned head sees the crown prince as looking forward to the day they become king, and maybe wanting it to come sooner rather than later.

I am proud to be an American, and have had a father and two brothers who served our country. But the way things are today in our great nation is nothing to be proud of. People writing hateful things and posting such things as our former first lady, Michelle Obama being actually a man. Leaves a lot not to be proud of. I know we have the freedom of speech, but some take undue advantage of such rights. And with children killing, cops killing innocent people, other people threatening the lives of another because of the color of the skin or how they worship God. That I am not proud of at all. In fact there are times when I heard of these horrids happening that I am ashamed at what our nation has become. And I am sure our founding fathers are turning in their graves.

Sorry, I'd far rather have a monarchy, who bring in more money than they cost us, than an elected president who has a political agenda and changes every few years.

@@Romcom356 But you have a prime minister who has a political agenda and is changed every few years. And the prime minister holds the power in England. The king is just an adulterous alcoholic figurehead.

I think of all the people portrayed in this show, Victoria is very hard to like. She has some good moments but they are overshadowed. I also found Albert very difficult to stand.
