Thanks for the video - although it probably would have been useful to start the test section with a recording using the unshielded microphone so that it could be used as a baseline to compare against the various shielded tests in the same environment - for example, you talked about there being a noisy leaf-blower outside your window - we'll just have to take your word for how noisy it actually was since I couldn't really hear it in the shielded recordings - but it would have been interesting to note how much of that external environmental noise might have been picked up in an unshielded scenario for comparison.

Im 100% about sound quality. i feel for singing (vocals) i prefer the CODN by far. the other 2 sounded a little boxy or a better word to describe it for me is chocked off. for singing i prefer a more natural open sound. this s why i record in the middle of a smallish room with furniture, rug and curtains to absorb reflections. of these three its the CODN for me especially with all you get for the money
@jasonbodden88163 жыл бұрын

I used the melon audio before it add more low end which is effecting the tune of the microphone, i think the best option is the codn reflection filter with some more acoustic treatment in the room but if you cannot add more acoustic treatment then melon will be the best spacially for someone whon travel a lot and record in different places
@kakuro19753 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this! From another video I saw, the reflections from behind are the main issue. Seems like the Melon Audio is an interesting one from that perspective. So a test with a "bad room" with a lot of reflections from behind would have been very beneficial, it could also with some modifying be placed on an arm.

I have used the acoustic reflector and melon with a neumann tlm 102 and it all depends on several factors. If you use these elements without an acoustic treatment of a room, it is not much use, it is not miraculous. If you are looking to isolate noise from the outside, it does not work. These only help to eliminate some frequencies in the micro that are annoying, but it is not airtight. Another thing that happens with melon, is that it highlights the bass frequencies a lot, which then in editing it is difficult to eliminate. The best option would be the acoustic reflector, but with a room optimized for audio, otherwise you will feel the echo of the room.

Vocal Recording Quality is best on Codn Isolation Shield Kit. If you absorb to much, you take out a the natural flow of the sound and recolor it wrong. If you dont absorb, you get to much artificial reflection/colors. Btw, you should make a comparison with and without booths on every booth.

I believe that its a complement of the room treatment, please describe your room treatment in a next video. If the room treatment is from good to excellent, all 3 of them should work great, but would prefer the CODN, because it does not paint the mic so much. if the room treatment is from none to poor, I would choose the Melon, knowing that I need to EQ to correct for the isolation effect.

I have a rode podmic. And it picks up a lot of background noises when I turn up the gain. You think this could fit , and help isolate the sound?
@EdwardSmithMusic3 жыл бұрын
A PodMic is a dynamic microphone, so it shouldn't pickup much background noise. Your mic isn't getting enough power, and therefore your increase in volume is causing the noise. A good solution is to get a Cloud-lifter. This device provides additional power for the mic so it sounds loud and clear, without any un-nessacary background noise being added.

The Melon thing can't really work to filter out room reflections, because all the reflection is going to happen before the sound enters the pop filter in the front. For it to work for room reflection, you would have to have your head inside the Melon thing.
@duckilythelovely3040 Жыл бұрын
That's not true. While it's partially true, if you talk on the side of a microphone you will still hear it. Doesn't matter if it's cardioid or not. While being fully encased is the best idea. Having all but the very front exposed does indeed prevent noise, vibrations ect from the back and side.
@Unethical.FandubsGames Жыл бұрын
@@duckilythelovely3040 Correction: Having all but the very front exposed does indeed BARELY prevent noise, vibrations ect from the back and side. In order to take full advantage of reflection reduction. The singer must be isolated WITH the mic. That way, audio from the vocalist is diffused on the way through the shield and then as it comes back from the room outside. Shields that isolate the mic from the back do very little to reduce reflections specifically because you're trying to reduce reflections on the side where the microphone already has the most rejection. You might even colour the audio by introducing more low frequency reflections (of which cardioid mics are practically omnidirectional). This is why none of these shields do much of anything in poorly treated rooms. Rooms in which the best course of action is; a booth or some proper sound treatment of the room. These things aren't useless. They do solve a problem... but they don't solve the problem many people think they do.
@duckilythelovely3040 Жыл бұрын
@@Unethical.FandubsGames You can say correction, but it doesn't mean it is. It actually does makes the vocals more vivid, and full. If you are unable to hear that, it would seem you're just not at that level yet to know it. Thanks for your comment!
@doknox Жыл бұрын
@@duckilythelovely3040it's not meant to prevent noise. Noise is gonna get thru irregardless. It's meant to prevent the mic picking up your voice bouncing back off a wall into the mic because it sounds horrible. Without any sort of room treatment to start these do nothing to help. Most of my vocal recordings for songs have a bit of white noise but you cant hear it in the mix. Definitely try to minimize noise as much as possible though before hand and if you have minimal room treatment set your mic up in the center of the room and record as close as possible to the mic.
