Drake's Cakewalk by Edwin F. Kendall
Sequenced by: Warren S. Trachtman
Info on Edwin:
Edwin F. Kendall represents another case of a working musician/composer who had some moderate success, yet very little is known about him. There are still questions on his history and perhaps some more information to be discovered. This is what the author has uncovered as of 2015. Kendall was born in or near New York City to Martin and Rose Kendall, both immigrants from England.
For the 1880 Federal census Edwin was shown as attending school, but also working in some capacity, although the occupation written down is difficult to discern.
However, by the next year, his future profession seemed to be in the works, as indicated by an announcement in the Music Trade Review of November 5th, 1881:
A Phenomenon. Master Edwin Kendall, a youth of about eleven years of age, residing in this city [New York], is a young pianist of extraordinary talent. He should receive a thorough and complete musical education. His present teacher is Prof. Bergé.
