At 4:35 where you have the 7905 VR isn’t the electrolyte capacitor wired wrong? Shouldn’t the negative side be connected to the red side?
@dustin797011 ай бұрын
You are right, ive searched up a datasheet and it also shows the negative side of the capacitor should be connected to the red wire in this case. If connected like this the capacitor will blow up.
@pain27379 ай бұрын
no it wont blow up? negative of the capacitor is on negative terminal (black)
@samppazzz6 ай бұрын
@@pain2737 Colour for output pin is wrong and if you measure output pin and negative rail, you get 0v because there is not much potential difference exist. That means you have to use 7905 output pin and original powersources positive lead. Dont let the colours fool you with this one. :)

Most circuits require a supply voltage that is constant independent of the current consumed. Even a small over-voltage could prove destructive, and this is why regulators should be used. But regulators also help a great deal in eliminating mains hum in audio amplifiers. In signal generators or oscillators, the output frequency will vary with supply voltage and must also be well regulated to keep this constant.

You get better regulation with the 7800/7900 series regulators with two volts higher input than the output voltage. The LM337 is used for adjustable negative voltage. the LM350 is a higher current positive adjustable regulator.

Maybe I took the title too literally. I wanted to know how a voltage regulator works; as in how it is constructed and by what principle it achieves it's purpose. I don't care about the specific names of different regulators.

@martinkuliza Жыл бұрын
Did you get a reading with the power ON or OFF ? The readings you should get is.. Continuity - GND Pin to a Ground Source like a screw terminal on your PCB or heatsink, You should have continuity Should have no continuity from GND Pin to Pin 1 Should have no continuity From GND Pin to Pin 3 Resistance GND to a GND Reference on the board, should be Low Resistance, < 0.3 Ohms GND to Pin 1 - OL GND to Pin 3 - OL Volts DC Gnd Probe on a GND Reference Red probe on Pin 1 should read the input voltage Red Probe on Pin 3 should read the Output Voltage Red Probe on GND Pin should read 0V DC if you are getting continuity between all pins when Not energized You have an internal short Circuit in this case you would have either Lower voltage than expected of more likely , no voltage on the output

READ the SPECIFICATION SHEET. Different regulators have different requirements for the input and output capacitors. READ THE SPECS!!!.

As Elon would say.. just read the instructions.. with the absence of bypass caps the reg can give erratic voltages as it produces rubbish AC.. ie unstable. oscillations.

Let me correct and address some things here. The input is called the collector. The output is called the emitter. The arrangement of the pins is described in the datasheet and you have to check with each part. Sometimes it's 1,2,3, sometimes it's 3,2,1. Yes the big metal tab on the back is a heatsink, probably. Sometimes, it's an extension of the ground pin. Again, check your datasheet. The resistor is only in the first example circuit to limit current for the LED. Higher voltage from the regulator requires a bigger resistor to protect the LED.

thanks for the video. In the case of the adjustable voltage regulator, what is the function of R1? what would happen if R1 was removed so that R2 only connected the ground pin to negative/reference voltage?
@almightytreegod Жыл бұрын
This doesn’t really help. I don’t understand why so many people teaching this stuff will gloss over how something actually functions and how they use the seemingly arbitrary values they use, and on the other hand, get into very precise detail overkill when it comes to simple, basic things, such as the naming conventions and how they output the same voltage but different amperage. That could have taken a few seconds but it’s like half the video, whereas this never explains how the resistor in the circuit works. Wouldn’t it drop it below the 5v output? That’s kinda what resistors do. They affect both voltage and current.

@saren6538 Жыл бұрын
Try it out on the breadboard
@dustin797011 ай бұрын
No, keep in mind the L78S05 aren't perfect clones of one another. For example Voltage Regulator A wants to produce 4,99 volts and B 5,01 volts. Because B will give out 5,01 volt A will turn off to bring it back down to 4,99V but B wont let it, if you got a load to it B will overheat since its doing the work for 2 and turn off after some time and A will take over until B is cooled down again. This will be a constant fight between these 2. There are some ways to avoid this but your better off purchasing a higher power one or a buck converter

@2:38 The LED doesn't get 5V since it's in series w/ the 330 Ohms resistance, but rather Vled = [ Rled / (Rled + 330) ] * 5V

the resistor is limiting the current - not dropping voltage. that is a common mistake
@gripperrod Жыл бұрын
I thought the resistor was chosen to ensure the appropriate voltage across the led which as the previous comment states varies by LED. When calculating this resistance current is not considered.

I want to design and build a voltage regulator. Input is from a fairly stable hydro-turbin producing from 20-30 AC volts and 20-50 amps to Dc voltage about the same. Desired output is from 15-30 volts DC via rectifier. It will then go to a charge controller to two 12/100Ah LIPO4 batteries. I can make them 24v which will require around 29v to charge or 15v to charge them as 12v array. The reason for voltage regulator before charge controller is that the charge controller wants to send resistance back to PM motor to shut it off. The motor will not restart without a hand spin up from me. In appreciation for any help.

Nicely presented. Would there be virtue in using a 7805 in conjunction with a 7905, in order to simultaneously regulate both the + & - of the output voltage?

I think we should provide an answer to Fiji Law, since he made a very logical question. Some of you keep insulting the asker without helping. Device housings are made under specific regulations, independend by device type, but by the power they consume. Power produces heat and it must be removed by some kind of cooler, so its practical to have the same housing for the same cooling needs. For details you can look for all type of housing (i.e. TO-220) and the Power they can handle.
