My daughter had 1 seizure due to sucking in helium from ballon (2018). Has had abnormal EEGs since, but no seizures of any sorts. Her last EEG was a 72 HR study that showed some spike and slow wave during awake and sleeping (2021). She's been off seizures meds for a few years. Drs claim she has epilepsy.I don't think she has epilepsy, and they confirm that she may/may not have another seizure; just not sure.

One seizure provoked environmentally is not epilepsy. There typically needs to be at least 2 seizures. 2+ years of remission is a great sign!

@@strangertobluewater Well, the doctor put her on medication in 2018. She has been off of medication since 2021. More than one neurologist have said she has a seizure disorder based on her EEG’s and wanted to keep her on meds. We chose not to continue meds against the doctor’s wishes bc of no other seizures. I know you can have abnormal EEG’s without having epilepsy from doing my research. Now, she has to be off medication for a total of 5yrs to be able to get into the Air Force with a waiver bc she wants to be an officer.

"post ictal aggression" is something to look out for as a seizure marker also, if patients are unreasonably combative & confused, I understand ambos see it quite a bit

Great point, post ictal confusion/aggression are pretty common

What helped you learn how to read eeg? I'm having trouble. Any books you recommend?
@jaredbeckwith
@jaredbeckwith 2 жыл бұрын
First thing is to know it takes a couple years at least. I’m still learning myself! For every patient write a small report on patient’s background PDR, sleep stages, photic driving, hv buildup, epileptic discharges or focal slowing seen. A book called “Rowan’s Primer of EEG” has decent pictures to learn the basics.

@lindsijade1
@lindsijade1 2 жыл бұрын
do you need to treat these epileptic spikes??
@jaredbeckwith
@jaredbeckwith 2 жыл бұрын
I give the test to the neurologist to read and they treat the spikes. They try medicine at first, and if it doesn’t work they might explore other options like surgery.

I have a question for you. Hopefully you can give me some insight, what does this mean? " Preliminary EEG showed intermittent slowing "
@jaredbeckwith
@jaredbeckwith 10 ай бұрын
A normal EEG background shows 8-12 waves per second. “Intermittent slowing” is referring to the EEG showing slower than 8 waves per second for short periods of time.
@joshuahaynes6918
@joshuahaynes6918 10 ай бұрын
@@jaredbeckwith Thanks for that explanation, do you happen to know what could be common diagnoses referred to “ intermittent slowing “?
@jaredbeckwith
@jaredbeckwith 10 ай бұрын
@joshuahaynes6918 if the intermittent slowing is mild like 7 waves per second it is not very concerning within normal limits. If the intermittent slowing is rhythmic and less than 4 waves per second it could be a sign of brain dysfunction with no specific diagnosis. You’ll have to ask the reading doctor for specifics.

My son had a sleep deprived EEG this morning and about every minute it had a indicator saying XL Spike, is that normal?
@jaredbeckwith
@jaredbeckwith Жыл бұрын
It sounds like XLTEK software trying to detect spikes which is often wrong. There are many false detections from movement. The only way to know if it’s abnormal is to have the neurologist read it. Best wishes!

My son had “Rare possible spike and slow wave complexes noted in EEG, less than 5 throughout study.” Is this my sons reading lol? But really. Could this be some type of epilepsy? He’s seen neurologists in the past and they said he wasn’t having seizures, but he had had multiple abnormal EEGs 🤦🏻‍♀️
@jaredbeckwith
@jaredbeckwith Жыл бұрын
It is similar to this patient I had. “Rare” means the doctor saw less than 1 per hour. These singular discharges aren’t seizures, but can be seen in people with epilepsy. Full seizures would show multiple second runs of these discharges. It is possible your son is having seizures, but they didn’t happen while on EEG monitoring.

Kinda funny question….. ever read Delta waves off a fully conscious patient? I’m a multi-form Aberration on the regular it seems. Clinicians typically don’t comment, so I know if they’re sharing, I’ve just spurred yet another medical tech to go regale a weird tale on Reddit. A basic conscious EEG screening for epilepsy, and the tech insisted I was manifesting deep sleep waves, tho I know I lay there nervously just trying not to fidget the whole time…. What DX is implied by abnormal slow wave? ;-) - I suppose it’s no weirder than the time I’m being processed to see my GP by the sweet nurse technicians, and not a single machine in the whole clinic could register any blood pressure. I saw the machines work on other patients after they gave up on collecting that stat, so apparently I had zero blood pressure and was undead? It’s all laughable. I’ve myriad medically alien stories like that. I make anesthesiologists look bad when I awaken during surgery screaming.. But seriously, can a fully conscious person show delta waves? Really enjoyed your informative video. I bet you’d be great at stories round a campfire.

An awake baby who is a few months olds shows delta waves. A normal awake adult shows alpha waves (8-12/second). Normal asleep adults show slower theta & delta waves in stage III sleep (also called slow wave sleep).

@@jaredbeckwith so the only DX/RX is … “you’re asleep baby; just row your boat on down that dreamy nebulous stream” (?) - I can dig/ paddle it. T btw, it’s some kinda freaky fabulous symptom of my ponder on wonder reality is that you shared your baby factoid. - The recent abortion debate had me on a short research binge around definition of life compared to the context of medical (brain) death. Wooooiee the interim data of foetal brain activity was fascinating. Some very interesting medical papers on the topic… (so Not intending on 🔥 that dumpster fire here respectfully). - So already understanding that Theta, but mostly Delta waves, “indicate” the state of being asleep, my groveling - have mercy - curiosity is: would Delta be always to the exclusion of being conscious? ⁉️👏🏼 I am so genuinely curious about the defined medical parameters, with perhaps dessert topping of your own personal opinion/experience, if you were feeling titillated. - I’m pretty sure under the frequency of bizarre phenomena that defines my stable Reallity Feed, I am likely consistently dreaming and conscious, which is to say, some form of Lucid Wakefulness. Solidly reassured this information feed is all “a manifestation of my lack of imagination”. (insert merry wistful giggles ). Is it aberrant to be conscious while broadcasting Delta waves ? (would be the crux if I were to relinquish a more ponderous excursion). I’ve always repurposed the adage to say: “God takes care of drunks, and little children. Lo I’m neither, I’m somewhere in between.” See now there’s gotta be a blues song called “The Delta Wave Baby Blues”
