The guitar-like instrument being played is a pedal steel guitar. VERY hard to learn as you are using both hands, both feet and even both knees. With patience and super ears you can do it though.

It's an Eels original. E wrote it after his cousin died in the 9/11 bombings after which he was scared of flying and had to take the trian everywhere when he was on tour. He talks about it in his autobiography, things the grandchildren should know.
