I appreciate it! I’m glad you said that because that’s what I’m trying to do, to simplify topics and to pass on useful information. Thank you! As far as channel name, you are the first to ask, landpet is comprised of a combination of family initials that make words. Doesn’t really have anything to do with my channel topic but just wanted something unique.

No problem. if you're on wireless backhaul (option #3) then yes eero Pro 6 will work better. Option #3, there's not too much of a difference between them. If you're happy with the Nest Wifi's performance, then there's no need to get the eero Pro 6.

Thanks for your videos, great work! That's interesting. I use Google Nest Wifi (not wired) with one router and three pucks and get pretty much the same speed (> 90 Mbit/s on a 100 Mbit/s internet connection) with any point. Okay, the puck which is farthest away from the router cuts it to, say, 70 Mbit/s, sometimes 80 Mbit/s, sometimes 65 Mbit/s, but never to (more) than a halft. True, a three-band system should perform even better (and speed wise it does, I have a FritzBox 7490 with a two FritzRepeater 3000 which is indeed even faster, it gives me the full 100 Mbit/s at every point; but unfortunately the Fritz-combo is not that reliable with Apple devices as the Google Nest Wifi; Fritz freezes sometimes or sticks to one repeater even when another is nearer and better). Overall I'm quite happy with the Nest Wifi so far.
@landpet
@landpet 3 жыл бұрын
No problem! Thanks for your input. With my internet speeds, they get cut in half easily. I haven't tried them with 100Mbps internet speeds but reading a ton about dual band, it's a common thing that people say their speeds were cut roughly in half as well. This is the first time, I've seen someone mention the speed not cutting by much. When I originally got my Nest Wifi, I thought my internet was too fast for the points that's why they were getting cut in half (well a little more) and I spoke to Google and they confirmed I was getting the best possible speeds but the more I read, the more it was a common theme. Thanks for posting your results!

Thanks for explaining the purpose of Tri-band as a backhaul. Nice job on the test and the graphic display of the results. I have the Nest Wi-Fi and have run into an issue that I didn't hear you mention. I wonder if it's the same on the eePro? It does not allow me to set a different Network Name for the 2.4GHz ve the 5GHz name. This cause a problem setting up some 2,4GHz only devices such as Meross lights and Echo Glow light
@landpet
@landpet 3 жыл бұрын
No problem. Excellent question. So these mesh WiFi’s simplify the network name however by doing that it does cause this issue you’re talking about, at least for initial setup. The eero has a troubleshoot section in the app that temporarily disabled the 5ghz bands so it only works as a 2.4 ghz to setup the devices that require it, then you can turn it off and it goes back to 5ghz and 2.4ghz operation. I don’t remember seeing an option on the nest WiFi for that but it may be there? One thing you can try is go far away from the router or move the router far away from the device because 2.4Ghz devices work better through walls, where 5ghz provides better speeds. By moving far away (far enough that you still have coverage though) there’s a potential it may default to the 2.4Ghz. Luckily the eero has an option in the app.

Hey brother! Thank you for another great video 👍 love my eeros, actually only one cuz the second one keeps losing the speed towards the wired one. But first I thought its a distance, we discussed it already. But one friend of mine purchased brand new pro 6, told him to get a good modem gig net etc. So straight after the modem he's getting 900 and up but with nothing connected right after a bare eero he can't get more than 600 down. Weird. Sometimes I think some of these units come defective

Thank you for the great reviews. Can you do a video comparing the security options provided by eero, Nest Wifi, TP-Llink Deco X60, and netgear? I want to know about Intrusion prevension options, intrusion dectection, content filtering, website blocking, etc. Do any of these also allow you to connect the router directly to a VPN service?
@landpet
@landpet 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I don't have the Nest Wifi nor the X60 anymore. So can't test those two. I held onto the eero Pro 6 and the Netgear Orbi for a longer term review. I didn't try installing VPN on the router itself, I just use it on my computer. Most of the stuff you're asking about, I generally do at my computer level (ExpressVPN and Sophos) and let the router be the firewall. These newer mesh wifi's are designed to be a little easier to use so as a result some of them have been restricted or just require subscriptions. Here's some information, I haven't played much with those features you're asking about. 1. eero lets you sign up for the eero secure+ (eero.com/eero-secure) which comes with their own VPN and content filtering among other features. (not free) It does support WPA2 AES and WPA3 (I don't use this cause of possible compatibility issues with devices) so it's fairly secure. It does notify you when devices connect and you can see the full list of devices that are connected at any time. 2. I don't believe you can install the VPN on the Nest Wifi itself but it does let you run it from your computer. It does have content filtering, you can see all the devices that are connected. I can't remember if something pops up on your phone to notify you if a device connected or not (the other mesh wifi's in your list do notify you when a device connects). Does have WPA2 AES as well WPA3 (but not all devices are compatible with WPA3), so they recommend running with WPA2 AES which is fairly secure. 3. X60 - You get HomeShield (www.tp-link.com/us/homeshield/) features for free (note HomeShield Pro isn't available on X60, only on X90 at least as of now) which include some decent protection but not everything. I don't believe you can run VPN directly on the mesh wifi but you can run on it your computer. It does notify you when devices connect and you can see the full list of devices that are connected at any time. 4. Orbi looks like it can use OpenVPN after setup (kb.netgear.com/31489/How-do-I-use-VPN-on-my-Orbi-system-with-my-iOS-device). It uses the "Circle" app for parental features (there is a free version but it's limited). It does notify you when devices connect and you can see the full list of devices that are connected at any time. Hope this helps.

I would agree with that statement, I did this comparison since several people asked at the time however I don't have the nest wifi anymore and I also don't have the older eero pro. I would assume the eero Pro would still be slightly better in wireless backhaul with little to no difference in wired backhaul.

I have both the Google and the Eero Pro systems, and have tried both in my two residences (two houses next to each other). My internet is 100meg only at this point in time (waiting for fiber) and so speeds with both systems were fine. However, I had issues with the Google system, it was suffering from frequent momentary dropouts which I was unable to resolve. The Eero Pro so far is solid and next spring I'll have gig fiber and then I'll wire the backhaul on the Eero. My goal is a solid setup for at least 2 years, if not 4 or 5 years.

@landpet
@landpet 3 жыл бұрын
No worries. Short answer: no speed difference when using wired backhaul. Only advantage of tri-band in this scenario is that it can handle more wireless devices without slowing down as much because it has an extra band. Long answer: The third band doesn't have an advantage of speed in terms of it being faster than the nest wifi if they're both on wired backhaul. The third band however does have another advantage which may or may not be useful to you. The tri band can allow more wireless devices to be connected simultaneously without slowing down as much compared to a dual band. Every wifi device that connects to the wifi does share the connection on the bands which has the potential to slow them down, so the tri-band has an extra band to offer more connections. In real world usage, in my case I can't tell a difference because I'm not using enough wireless devices at the same time to notice it. If you have a ton of wireless devices that are in use at the same time, then tri band will help that. Granted you're internet speed is being shared as well no matter if it's dual band or tri-band, so your internet will probably slow down before anything else if a ton of devices are being used at the same time. Hope this helps

@landpet

Well if you're adding them via WiFi. You would need to enable WiFi on your laptop and search for nearby networks. It should come up with a list of SSIDs (network names). Select the network name you created and enter the password you created on the eero app. It should connect and give you network access. Same would be for a phone, just enable WiFi and it will show you the nearby SSIDs, select the one you created, enter the password and you should be golden.

If you need more, then you can get one eero router and two eero extenders or two eero routers and one extender or three eero routers.

I have both Google mesh 1 gen and a erro 6 pro, the other day I did several speed test on both and the erro 6 pro was only 5 to 7 mbps faster then the Google mesh and on a few of the speed tests the Google mesh was faster. All in all I think it's good marketing on companies to up-sell you on something you may not need. Because I brought it into erro believing it was a game changer and ultimately it wasn't really that much faster. The point of the story is save your $ and get a Google mesh It is cheaper and works just as well and this is coming from someone who is a cloud gamer.

How come mesh router manufacturers don't integrate a modem then they could replace your existing modem router. Alternatively, why does one of the mesh routers need to be connected by ethernet to your modem, rather than connecting wirelessly? Seems dumb to have a whole new router right next to your existing wireless modem router...suppose its because they're mostly retrofitted to existing set ups?
@landpet
@landpet 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! I understand where you're coming from but while limited in supplies, they actually do have modem router mesh combos like the Netgear Orbi here: amzn.to/3cdM02x I personally don't like modem/router combo partly because I've had problems with them in the past and the potential to be tied down to a specific ISP. The problem is that if something messes up, it takes more effort to isolate the issue, in terms of is the problem the modem or the router portion? The next issue is that routers typically have shorter lifespans than modems, I've read several forums/articles that state wireless transmission of signals degrade over time. So I personally swap out my routers more often than my modems. Routers also get better with newer Wi-Fi standards whereas with a modem, if you're paying for 400Mbps internet speeds and you're getting that, then why change it? Does it matter if DOCSIS 3.1 comes out that can support much faster speeds if you're already getting the advertised internet speeds? But with Wi-Fi, newer standards are released that provide better coverage and/or faster speeds. Also if you move, you can take your router with you but your modem depends on your ISP's compatibility. So yes, you can just upgrade your modem/router combo but that typically costs more than just getting a router. It really comes down to preference, some people like the simplicity of a modem/router combo and I used to be one of those people but now I prefer them to be separate so I can freely change and diagnose them if issues arise. You also have many more options as routers compared to modem/router combos. I think manufacturers also prefer to keep their routers open in design to be compatible with just about everything rather than to be tied down to certain ISPs. I haven't looked this up but I imagine they use ethernet cause it's cheaper to implement, faster and more reliable than wireless. If the modems that were just modems (not modem/router combos) used wireless to connect to a router, it would have to be some new standard or maybe a wireless adhoc to not interfere with your SSID. At least, this is my 2 cents, hope this helps!

@@landpet Thanks for the detailed reply dude! I probably should have said I'm writing from the UK where ISPs ship a modem router combo with the vast majority of internet packages (terrible for e-waste!). Otherwise I think you make good points and I would prefer to split them. Shame the Orbi is so expensive haha. But then we have a router already so no need really - I just turned off the WiFi on the BT router so it's just a modem now with the BT mesh routers.

@@landpet I really appreciate you for your response. I like your channel and I wish you blessings. I have to drive at least 3 or 5 miles for my phone to work properly. I have been washing your videos and I was so convinced that I found my solution. Thank you and forgive me for the long story. Thanks
@landpet
@landpet 3 жыл бұрын
No worries. Getting a new router may alleviate your problem but first we need to determine if that's the issue. It does take a bit of effort to determine the problem, so I will offer some suggestions: 1. Determining if your internet is the problem a. What is your download speed that your ISP (Spectrum) is providing? b. When you do a speed test (www.speedtest.net) on your computer preferable something hooked up with ethernet, are you getting those speeds? At this point, if you're not getting the advertised speeds that Spectrum is providing on a computer that's hooked up via ethernet, then you need to call Spectrum. Getting a router is not going to fix your problem. 2. Is your IPTV hooked up via WiFI? a. If it's hooked up via WiFi, when you do a speed test on your iPhone near the router, are you getting near Spectrums advertised speeds? b. If it's hooked up via WiFi, if you do a speed test on your iPhone near your IPTV device, what speeds are you getting? If you're getting speeds under 10 to 15Mbps, then there will most likely be buffering. If you did get the advertised speeds on your iPhone when you're near the router but getting bad speeds when you're near the IPTV device again on your iPhone, then getting two eero Pro 6 routers (granted it depends how large your home is) should alleviate your problem. 3. If your IPTV device is hooked up via ethernet and that makes it all the way via ethernet to your modem (doesn't have to go directly, could be through an unmanaged switch, just as long as there are no wireless points in between), then it may be that either the IPTV device itself is of poor quality or the servers your IPTV provider is hosting it on is of poor quality (which I imagine what your wife is referring to). NFL is also popular, so the servers must be getting more people than less entertaining channels which could cause slowdowns as well. If you're problem is here, then getting a router is most likely not going to help you out. Hopefully you have download speeds of at least 100Mbps to get a buffer free experience, ideally I would even try to increase that number. In an ideal world, 100Mbps would be more than enough but the reality with ISP services from what I've noticed is that you really want to go faster. When I had 100Mbps a few years back, I still noticed some buffering which is why I have the advertised 400Mbps now and am considering their 940Mbps service. But so far, 400Mbps has been a lag free experience for me. Hope this helps!
