See how Dennis led Zoe on, I think he did have feelings for her, he could be really sweet to her. If Sharon didn't exist. Maybe he would have been better off with Sharon. She was so nasty to zoe out of jealousy telling Dennis he needed to hold her hand. Sharon could also be condescending and controlling to Dennis. He loved her because she could be kind and caring to him but maybe he'd have got sick of her attitude. She'd play games with him. Some older women treat their younger lovers as their sons. If Sharon wasn't there he'd probably have had a good family life with her. He admitted he was only with Zoe because Sharon wouldn't come back, he asked her and she said no. She wouldn't take him back but she moped around miserably
