How much has oscilloscope technology developed in the last 5 years?
Dave compares the baseline $800 entry level scope from 5 years ago, the Rigol DS1052E / DS1102E, to the current $800 benchmark, the DS2072.
Demos of intensity graduated display, waveform update speed, LXI Ethernet interface control and waterfall plots, segmented memory waveform replay mode, and more.
Includes bonus gratuitous analog oscilloscope comparison.

The DS1052E also has the waveform recording feature although it's not accessible from the front panel like the 2000 series you have to dig into the the utility menu. i'm running firmware 3.01

No need to fret, this is not mis-titled. If you look at the specs of DS2XXX (www.rigolna.com/products/digital-oscilloscopes/ds2000a/#tabs-1) you will see the only major difference is what bandwidth you want; which the low end $800 model is 70MHz (still better than the DS1052E) + the features Dave covers in the vid (which apply to all DS2XXX models).

I just bought the 1052E as my first scope because it had a really good reputation. It's super handy and I really don't need any greater performance or more features, but I wish I checked out some of the newer scopes around the same price because of the screen's low res and small size. By the way, the 1052E comes with the fancier 150MHz probes now.

This was such a great video, Dave. I've used the 1052E at Uni for years, and I still learnt a few things just now. After seeing the 2k series I realise I've still got so much to learn.......

Are you serious? The 80286 isn't available today, nor a serious option for anyone considering buying. The DS1052 *is* still for sale, and it's a serious comparison question many people ask. So it's very valid to compare the DS2072 and see if it's worth twice the price of the DS1052E. And b) the video remains an interesting look at the advanced in scope technology in five years in its own right.

I really find Dave's equipment reviews interesting and helpful. Matter of fact Dave's reviews indirectly saved me about $489 U.S. I was considering buying a Agilent DSO1052B for $789.99 at Fry's electronics. But I did some research on the web, and when I Googled the Agilent model number the Rigol DS1052E came up. Having seen Dave's equipment review on the Rigol and checking a little further. I went with the Rigol. I don't need to pay $500 for an Agilent badge on my equipment. Thanks Dave!

I WOULD LIKE TO UPDATE THIS VIDEO AND GIVE MY PERSONAL FEEDBACK AND OPINION 1. Ok....the date today is 11th December 2018 2. I literally bought my scope OFF THIS VIDEO's Recommendation, thanks again Dave, i have a fucking awesome scope, Don't regret it at all so.. MY OPINION to the question in the video.. Do you buy the DS1000E Series vs the DS2000 Series ? *DS2000, HANDS DOWN* that's the short answer 3. so now, 5.5 years approx. has gone by, My scope has not had a single fucking problem and it still looks brand new, for the most part 4. now let's discuss this question in the forum --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- " JustMe9 You're not using the right scope. That's a 2202, and it ain't $800 " -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WARNING, I'M GOING TO GO INTO SOME DEPTH, so those of you who don't want to read JUST DON'T READ IT .. simple as that ok, here's the deal - the person asked dave, should he save for 2 MONTHS and by the DS1052E or save for 4 MONTHS and buy the DS2000 SERIES FACT - Note that Dave said "DS200 Series" and he is showing a DS2202, However the description (Which i think is the root of this problem here) says "DS2072" FACT - I Bought (What was badged as ( A DS2072A) FACT - DS2202, DS2072, DS2072A are all part of the DS2000 Series (the only difference are some specs, AND THEY ARE UPGRADEABLE FOR FREE ANYWAY) FACT - as we found out later on , THE BADGE IS BULLSHIT ANYWAY FACT - My Scope (As i stated) is badged as DS2072A and yet, when i go into SYSTEM INFO it says DS2302A Now let's compare those prices (According to rigol's website) which is also bullshit , because you can get the scopes cheaper, but let's do it anyway DS2072A = $839 DS2302A = $1,849 HEHE.. big fucking difference huh FACT, - When i got my scope , THAT I PAID (i think) $1,100 for (with no upgrades) i went to the EEV Blog Forum and learned how to upgrade my scope, and i'll get into that later FACT - at 2:05 Dave states that THIS VIDEO WILL BE ABOUT COMPARING .........THE ADDITIONAL FEATURES..... OF THE DS2000 SERIES (note he said "SERIES") over the DS1000E Series so Dave is correct and from this point of view, it doesn't really fucking matter which one it was, you see the point was , WHICH ONE SHOULD THE GUY GET. The answer is THE DS2000 Series FACT - Just like i bought the DS2072A with the following basic specs 70 MHz Analog Bandwidth 2 Channels 1 Trigger Channel 2 G Sa/s WITH NO OPTIONS UNLOCKED and i think the Mem depth was 14M Points AFTER THE UPGRADE here is what my scope is now 300 MHz Analog Bandwidth 2 Channels 1 Trigger Channel 2 G Sa/s 56 M Points Memory Depth all of the following OPTIONS were disabled (Actually at time of purchase they were UNLOCKED ON TRIAL and after a certain time it is disabled) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OPTION TYPE OPTION NAME ADVANCED TRIGGER Windows Nth Edge HDTV Delay Timeout Dur USB DECODE RS-232 SPI I2C PROTOCOL ANALYSIS CAN MEM DEPTH 56M/28M BANDWIDTH 300M BANDWIDTH --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AND after the upgrade they were all unlocked (see Daves EEV Blog Forum for details) hence IF THE GUY BUYS THE DS2000 SERIES (regardless of which one) he could upgrade from 70MHz to 300MHz he could upgrade from standard Memory Depth to 56Mpts Memory depth vs the DS1000E series (which was approx. 5 years old at the time ) and was around $800 to purchase (i know , i checked) some places did them for $500 but most were $800 now in fairness the DS1000E was upgradeable, but still it wasn't a comparison so DAVE WAS DISPLAYING WHAT WAS POSSIBLE (Even after upgrade) and let's be honest, why wouldn't you fucking upgrade it. and that's what dave showed it literally makes no fucking difference that he showed a DS2202 as opposed to a DS2072, My scope started as a supposed $800 and is now upgraded to a supposed $1849 scope hehe FACT - i played with my scope prior to upgrade, it was still FAR FAR BETTER Than the DS1052E.........Miles ahead of it as dave said - The probes - The Display (i cannot stress how useful the wider display is ... to have a14 Division Time Base... hehe PRETTY FUCKING COOL and very useful - Memory Depth 1Mpt (on the DS1000E) vs 14Mpts (without upgrade) and after , it's 56Mpts, it's not contest - the Sample rate on the DS1000E is 1GSa/s the DS2000 Series is 2 GSa/s READ THIS... WITH THE EXCEPTION OF DS2202 and DS2102E so dave is actually using a scope with lower sample rate - The Record feature is really cool and useful and the DS1000E doesn't have it - The MASK PASS/FAIL feature is something i use a lot - as for INTENSITY this is a useful feature that dave pointed out - I DO ALSO WANT TO SAY THIS, i can set my scope to a) 56 Mpts Memory Depth b) 1V Per Div c) Right down to 1.000 nano second per division (ok) d) and just to push my luck, i can go to ACQUIRE / ACQUISITION and select HIGH RES and after all that, THE PICTURE IS FUCKING BRILLIANT and the scope doesn't freeze and performs very well truth be told there is really not much need MOST OF THE TIME TO USE HIGH RES , but it's there Now look, this is getting kinda long, so let me try to sum this up a bit (let's just say it has a lot of fucking features) *THE DS2000A IS A FUCKING ANIMAL* i agree with daves conclusion (Even now, 5 years later), that being.. IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD the DS2000 Series.... yes go with the lower model PERSONALLY, I THINK IT'S A WASTE OF MONEY. I BOUGHT MY SCOPE ON THE PREMISE (AND SORT OF A GAMBLE) THAT THE LOWER SCOPE WAS A WASTE OF MONEY............and i was right SO TODAY'S DAY, WHAT IS NEW?... WELL, THE BUZZ SEEMS TO BE - forget the DS1052E - Get the RIGOL DS1054Z (Which is the DS1000Z Series) I DISAGREE let's compare ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DS2072A DS1054Z ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2 CHANNEL 4 CHANNEL (THIS IS THE SELLING POINT) 70MHz Bandwidth 50MHz (i'm not considering upgrades here, THIS IS JUST STOCK STANDARD) Upgradeable to 300MHz Upgradeable to 200MHz Ext Trigger. No Trigger hehe 2 GSa/s Sampling Rate 1 GSa/s ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CONCLUSION *5 YEARS LATER THE DS2000 SERIES IS STILL BETTER* than the DS1054Z these days the DS1054Z is like $400 and the DS2072A is like $800 i've seen people on gumtree selling their DS2000's for $400 so they could buy a DS1054Z LOL.... fucking stupid i'VE ALSO SEEN PEOPLE SELLING THEIR DS1052E for $800 SO THEY CAN FUCK YOU OVER AND GET A DS2000 upgrade for free, while they leave you with the 10 year old model. you can buy a brand new DS2000 for $800 WHY WOULD YOU TAKE A DS1000E INSTEAD.......THAT'S JUST FUCKING DUMB, i would pay no more than $150 for the DS1052E today SO AT THE END OF THE DAY, IT DIDN'T REALLY MATTER IF DAVE USED THE OTHER SCOPE ALL THINGS CONSIDERED, it made no difference to the answer if Dave used a DS2072 or DS2202, MAKES NO DIFFERENCE. feel free to ask questions if you need to. BE COOL GUYS, Hope this was informative

I REALLY want to go with the 2000 series over a 1000 series. The DS1052E is most definitely not even in my consideration, but I HAVE been considering the MSO1074Z or MSO1074Z-S (with the built in 2 channel waveform generator). I'd be doing a lot of work that involves watching the timing of digital output sequences that trigger off of analog circuits... Basically, I REALLY would benefit from an MSO version over the DS version of these scopes. I also find 2 channels limiting, and miss the old 4 channel from my old job. Between doing three phase motors and 3 hall commutation (job related), and most of my aforementioned digital/analog circuits functioning in groups of fours... 4 channels is something I am REALLY set on... I see that there are NO 4 channel variants of the DS2000 or MSO2000 series, and that is a REAL bummer... It would seem that to get 4 channels, and an MSO, AND the more advanced features, it looks like I'd have to jump to an MSO4000 series, which is WAY too expensive for my budget. I'd be willing to forgo the waveform gen, as I could get a stand alone unit for not THAT much more than the add on option, but yeah... It looks to me like I'm really bound to the MSO1074Z-S or MSO1104Z-S. The only difference being, do I pony up for the additional 30 MHz worth of bandwidth and make it a 100 MHz. I rarely work in anything too high in frequency... for now. I DO want to future proof myself, and it's one reason I'm HUGELY bummed there appears to be no 4 channel DS or MSO2000 series.

Nice one this DS2072, a great step forward I assume. And honestly, I can understand that they sell licenses for these software upgrades like the decoding or the advanced(!) triggering (esp. because they wouldn't possibly exist at all without the licenses, they are a self paying product in a product). But I feel cheated about the additional memory upgrade to 56 Mpts you have to buy. I mean the additional memory is only software upgraded, wtf? 385$, seriously?

That was similar with the Agilent series but recently they have added it to their lower series. I wonder if rigol will follow. Id like the can decoding but it's a big jump to the rigol 4000 series, so is it worth it?

Hello Dave. I am in the market for an Oscilloscope. I am wanting a four channel. It didnt take me long to figure out I would be paying 3 to 4 times the price of a two channel. Would it be feasible just to buy two 2 channel scopes instead of one four channel? My main focus is for working on and designing guitar effects and amps. Love your videos.

But doesn't the label say DS2202 (not DS2072) on the machine itself?

Hi, Dave. May you compare Rigol DS20xx with Tek DPO2002 and Agilent DSOX2002 Yes, the rigol (for example DS2072) is the cheapest from these 3 on the market, but you has Agilent. What's your opinion between these 2 scopes? Also how fast powers rigol and agilent scopes? Thanks, Niki.

Above it all i think ds1052 or even 1022 is good enough for audio (plus harmonics) signal analysis. If you never go above 200kHz, is it worth paying extra money for 2000 series?

I might be a total tard for asking this, but. Im quite of a tech geek, and fell over this video among others. What purpose does a oscilloscope serve, what would you get one of these for ? :)

it allows one to view oscillations of electronic signals, thus the name oscilloscope. So if you want to understand how electronic components interact or what happens when you change or add a component, use a scope, or o-scope for short. This is like a tape measure to a carpenter...measure twice...cut/change...measure...

Look like my first Oscilloscope will be the Rigol DS2072. How does it feel when you hold it, the hardware is solid?

The question becomes " Do you need the capability of the higher priced scope?" Why buy capability that you will never use?
