Don't forget to also keep a sealed pack as a control group. My money is on the pack leaking first.

Alkaline batteries never leaked until someone thought it was a good idea to ban mercury from alkaline cells. So now we have a problem with billions of electrical and electronic devices being scrapped due to corrosion instead of the much simpler solution of recycling the batteries. Progress ???

If you put alkaline batteries in a battery charger they tend to leak. Only takes a day or so.

Don´t understand why and how you can sell equipment from somebody who won´t even give you a schematic or service manual. As soon as it fails outside of the guarantee period it will end up in the bin.

Almost every battery that I have ever had leak is a Duracell. GP batteries for me seem to be about the most leak proof, but thats just from my experience.

These are generic units, I bought one labelled as Yihua on ae, but it's unbranded. Search for "yihua 858d manual" and you can get an English one. You can buy new guns on ae.

It is due to the 1996 regulation restricting mercury use in batteries. All brands took a hit from this.

I've had unused, still in the factory package, with many years left before "expiration", Duracells from Costco leak - still in the package! Ditto for Energizer leaking in barely used remote controls, still showing full DC voltage, but leaking still. But for some reason, the weird ones you get in new, cheap consumer stuff from China, never seem to leak, even years and years down the road.

I had 16 duracells for a metal detector I bought. Never used the metal detector. All leaked. Rest of batteries, no leaks. Ok so its over a lot of years, but duracells always end up leaking. Maybe its because they sacrifice robustness of casing to maximise capacity or something ... but yea.

So, Australia is catching up to where the rest of the western world got to over 50 years ago. I grew up in what we call a 'century home' (meaning a house built at least 100 years ago, although technically that actually came along in 1980, when my family had lived in the home for several years), and it had DIN rails and modular circuit breakers that plugged in. The old wiring design looks like the wiring in a server room or telephone cabinet maintained by someone too incompetent to understand the necessity of rigid change control and documentation processes following from detailed planning. The cause is the same reason your panel was this messy: You make one small change, and that leads to another small change, and before you know it you don't have a valid map of the thing any more.

So can someone explain to me what would happen if we increaseed the distance between the battery and the bulb to a really huge number? Does the transmission line model still hold (open circuit with capacitance) and close to no current would flow or would local surface level fields actually keep propagating along the wire and produce current eventually?

Its the series configuration, that is the key to creating 'leakers' due to the reversed polarity some of the batteries will suffer from... Also I'd try the simple transistor oscillators, those go down to 1V. Another factor is environment, I think being in a controlled environment might prevent some leakage, while storing them in a hot car or outside in a humid environment probably encourages leakage...

It's more about what year they were made than what the load is. If you have any AA Duracell batteries that have a 2029 expiration date, they will leak if they haven't already. At work, we, for some reason, had way more AA batteries than we should have. I went through them and almost every single package with a 2029 expiration date had at least one leaking one. (Only one package out of about 20 didn't have a leak.) We had older ones, but there was no leaks in them. We had newer ones again no leaks. Only the 2029 ones leaked.

Really dumb question, but how do I power this? Mine only came with a USBC to DC5521 adaptor. When I use a portable power bank, it just tells me the voltage is low.

I recently bought a 30-pack of Rayovac Fusion AAA's from Amazon. When they arrived... 4 of them had leaked in the package. I tossed them, tested the rest, and cleaned up the package. I think I paid $18 for the 30-pack. ( Which turned out to be a 26 pack. ) 😒

I have always suspected a series string of cells will leak quicker that a single cell, as the first cell to discharge to 0 volts will then have reverse voltage impressed on it by the residual charge and current from the remaining cells.

I understand from a materials researcher that they used to wipe the inside of the steel case with mercury to prevent the case from deteriorating. Without that (all modern alkaline cells) the case can be attacked by the electrolyte. The second reason is poor seals or poor seal assembly. Obviously. The final reason is if pressure builds up in the case and opens the anti-explosion vent or bursts a seal. Pressure can happen for many reasons, but perhaps the most common is likely severe discharge (self-discharge or during use). Charging a cell (even briefly due to inductive kick with some switching power supplies) can cause gas production which causes pressure. My experience with now three batches of "industrial use, not marked for individual sale" AA cells seems to indicate that these cells are better built than retail packaged cells. No leaks yet with Duracell (best by 2015), and Energizer (best by 2023) and now Eveready (best by 2024). (These are the cells that you might find packaged with equipment.) I recently discarded nearly 10 year past "best by" Duracells from that first batch. Duracell: Originally the batch was dated 2015 and I acquired them as surplus in 2012. I set aside some new and they eventually self-discharged to below 0.9v and I added a set removed from operation that tested between 0.6-0.7v (my "joule thief" quits at about 0.6v). No leaks and all the Duracells have been removed from service a few years ago and the samples were discarded this year. Energizer: Testing continues on the Energizer industrials, but the last are in use now, probably replaced in the next month or three. The "stored while new" are still over 1.5v (no load) and no leaks in use or the stored after dead are also fine. One of those is in a shorted battery holder. Too early to say anything about the Eveready industrials.
