Dave shows you how it's not that hard to find that mythical $50 analog oscilloscope on ebay. At least in the US and UK.
Some brands to search for:
Tektronix
HP
Philips
Hitachi
Kikusui
Iwatsu
Hameg
GW/Goodwill
BK Precision
Kenwood
Panasonic
LG

Local pick up, working fine just contacts are a bit meh but they seem to be getting better with use. tl;dr keep watching, here it usually goes for around 4-5x that price but i got it for 30$!

Thanks Dave! Your advice is awesome! I absorbed everything you said in your Drive Time Rant video, and then your video on the mythical $50 Ebay Scope and went out and landed myself a Hitachi V-1565 2-channel 100Mhz CRO for $85, shipping in! I even bought one of those Hung Chang 20Mhz rebrands for $20 (with $30 shipping) which truly makes it a $50 scope. Thanks for your good advice and looking forward to learning more from EEVBlog (from Canada)!

Dave, You are spot-on with your $50 estimate. I have purchased a dozen oscilloscopes for repair, all under $50. All but 3 worked out of the box upon receipt, I paid $9.99 for a Hitachi V1065 (100 Mhz), $25.00 for a BK Precision 2025 (20 Mhz), and $25.00 for a Tektronix 475 (250 Mhz) as examples. The big trick is to be patient when using eBay, use the "add to watch list" feature to save potential buys, then it is easy to go back and decide what you want out of the "watch" list. Cheers-

I just gave 2 CRT base 20KHZ classic oscilloscopes; the catch was you had to take an entire lot of electronics and move it from my basement. Someone got a good collection of equipment, and I got a part of basement back, which my wife claimed immediately. Now I'm back watching videos got to get a small, inexpensive digital version. Thank you for your videos.

I picked up a 100mhz dual channel scope in Japan for 7000 yen, tax free with a small discount as I am a student. (About 35 pounds sterling) Sure it weighs 11 kilogrammes, runs off 100 volts ac and did not include probes, but it was incredibly cheap, especially considering that it was from an actual, brick and mortar shop with just electrical test equipment. Japan is amazing, it is shame I could not get probes over there at the same time. The scope is an Iwatsu ss+6121.

I'm in Canada and you can find scopes. First, look at craigslist and kijiji listings for your area. Make some offers. Next, if you have friends or relatives in the USA, ship to them and pick it up on a trip (or they might be able to ship it). You have to bid on Ebay and wait, eventually one will come up. Bid what you want to pay, eventually you will win something because other people miss it or just luck. Don't get in a bidding war! I'm proof that in Canada you can still buy a $50 scope.

9:00 Those completed listings aren't always correct. Those can be listings that people pulled or changed for whatever reason, and it shows the listing as "completed." But that doesn't mean that an oscilloscope was listed for $20 and didn't sell.

I scored a mid 70's Leader_LBO 515b scope for $10.00 USD that just needed the pots cleaned and a couple aged caps replaced as expected in any old electronics. Here's a hint, the horizontal timebase is usually that big knob on the front, you turn it until you see the cycles. It's trivial, come on. Triggering, yes that is the only "tricky" part, but it's not rocket science. usually just select auto triggering and the channel you want. Then you play around and LEARN what Normal mode does etc. There are countless basic tutorials online to get anyone started in a matter of minutes. Auto mode on a digital scope doesn't teach you anything.

There is another HUGE potential benefit If you can find a local seller via Craigslist or whatever; The probability of being able to 'geek out' with the seller is pretty high, they'll likely sit down and TEACH you how to work their old scope that they outgrew. -- Happy owner of a $99 tek 2213

Another place to look for scopes is car audio hobbyists. I have seen people that bought a scope to setup their amp gains and crossovers but they became intimidated by all the knobs etc. and didn't take the time to learn to use it. So it sits in the box unused. Ask around and you may find someone willing to let theirs go cheap because they don't know how to use it.

This works for other test equipment too if you shop around. Trick is to watch shipping because some people will list a low buy it now but a high shipping to "make up for it". I know ebay was combating the low buy-it-now/high shipping practice, but you still see it. I wonder if sellers were doing it so ebay wouldn't take such a huge bite out of the sale? Just have to take your time and shop around a bit :)

after losing a pile of 2 - 4 am auctions, i got a bk 2120 20mhz for $50 shipped on ebay. that was from a thrift store seller in as-is-powers-on status. it was $30 + $20 shipping, and was only that price because they sent the heavy bastard from the short 3 hours north in ca. it's not typical, as dave makes it seem, and you have to just get lucky. my suggestion is to try goodwill's online auctions (search for the link). their shipping prices suck, but it's a plan b when ebay fails. shipping is kind of a killer when it comes to these.

Also add Fluke analog oscilloscopes to that list. Philips oscilloscopes changed name to Fluke after Fluke bought Philips' testing and measuring device division in 1993. Same scopes different names. Fluke's portable ScopeMeters are also a result of Fluke's cooperation and later take over of Philips' testing and measuring device division. In 1999 HP scopes also changed name to Agilent as most are probably aware of. But that was after the big digital scope revolution came from HP.

I followed Dav's advice and I have to say there are some big drawbacks to these old scopes: 1)They are BIG they take up a lot of your bench space. 2) Zero features compared to even the cheapest modern scopes. 3) If you don't know-how to use it and you don't have someone to show you then you will never figure it out. They are NOT intuitive. 4) They are analog only. If you are doing arduino-like stuff you really need some digital channels. Get a ~$300 modern scope with both digital and analog in!

Hitachi and Kikusui were what the community colleges used here in the USA back in the 1980s, when I was in school. The HP & Tektronix were the coveted scopes in the lab, but the Hitachis was fine for almost anything I ever did. They really worked great! The school bought a lot of Kikusuis, and the sold the Hitachis for $10 each! What idiots! The Hitachis were better in my opinion. Most of them were not damaged and were fully functional. Schools were dumping the old Hitachis & Kikusius at auction for peanuts. Palettes of them for under $100 and you might have 12-20 scopes on a palette. I dragged back a truckload of 465 B era Tektronix scopes for $1200. I had 60 or more scopes and over 100 vintage POLARIOD film scope cameras.

The issue with older oscilloscopes are that the crt displays are near or past end-of-life. Other than some really expensive industrial modules, do any manufacturers make an inexpensive analog crt input to VGA or HDMI converter? I am only assuming of course that the analog crt signal is not directly compatible with analog VGA (which would be excellent if I am wrong on that). While I found a few LCD replacement projects online they seem to be for the Tektronix units that have a VGA output already. A HP 54502A with a $40 replacement mono LCD display would be everything an entry-level hobbyist like myself would need. Guess I should start doing some research.

I don't see why calibration on an analog scope is even a consideration. Set it for 1 Volt/div and supply it with say 5V dc and see if it moves 5 divisions. If not unlock the red cal knob and tweak it to 5 div. Do the same with an audio test tone at say 1KHz from your cell phone and cal the time base. For beginners you mostly just need to know if your circuit is working as intended. You really don't need precision.

I'd add Grundig to the list, they're easy to find (at least here in EU) and rather cheap. Years ago I found dual channel 20MHz MO22 for free, someone put it in the trashcan. It had only minor PSU damage (shorted cap) and since then it's my favorite analog scope, even though I have a couple of others. Few months ago I decided to buy another one, so I started watching the local auctions and it took me like 2 weeks to find one for ~100PLN + shipping (that's like ~40$).

He did not try to sell it for twenty bucks, that was the minimum bid. no one bid so it did not sell. The ones that didn't sell that show a low dollar bid did not meet the reserve.

At 20:14, It says it didn't sell because the seller took it down. Just thought i'd say that with you ranting about how cheap it was.

Gave the kid my barely used HC 20 mhz dual scope so I needed a new seccond scope for my bench. Found a Hitachi dual 40 mhz good working for 125 Kr Norwegian. = 21 AUSIE $ Hada friend pick it up for me so the freight came down to a cold beer. Got BK transistor tester from the same guy for the very same price and the shipping went into the same cold one. It's totally possible to find what ya want for the right price with some patience and a bit of luck :)

Sadly there's something about eBay and Canada that just doesn't mix. The oscilloscopes that originate in Canada start at $70 (inc shipping) for the shell of the scope with no guts. The cheapest full scope which doesn't claim to not work is $170 (inc shipping). Expanding to worldwide, I see a sketchy single channel Tenma scope for $50, and then the cheapo usb DSO's starting around $70 before any more analog scopes show up.

What about those little digital diy kits like the DSO138 by jye? They can be had under 20$ shipped and come with a simple bnc clip probe, have ac and DC coupling. Also is portable.

The $50 XMEGA Xprotolab is mixed. Has 2 analog and 8 digital plus function generator. I would get that before I got an old analog scope. For $325 you can get the MSO-28 which is 2 analog 10 digital plus FFT. Both decode serial, I2C, SPI, extra.

Pretend for a moment that you have never seen an analog scope. Think about how hard it can be to find the horizontal range -there is no auto-range. Think about how hard it is to get triggering right and to find the right time-base. Again, no auto-range. Even the sub-$100 portable scopes have auto-ranging. If someone needs a cheap scope or a starter scope I would go with the portable type. That way, when you upscale your starter scope is still useful for its portability.

The Dollar is worth .66 British Pounds as of January 25, 2015. It has been closer to .75 Pound Sterling, but has dropped to .67 lately. The Pound has not been valued as high as $2 per for some time.

Back here after 7 years... Gonna say that the auction will have a quite high price in the last few seconds. You cannot imagine that the price rises from £60 to £200 in minutes.

Dave, First scope you found in the us shipping from Florida. Great deal, but even in the country nearly 50 USD to ship so always something to be mindful of. Great video anyways.

I have two Textronix analog o-scopes. If you can pick one up do it!! One of them is a storage type and the other one is one my father had that had three slots for the functions.

The problem is a lot these cheaper ones even with better rated HV leads/jacks are just not capable of high voltage they are limited to low stuff.
