Great accent...Good information especially explaining sampling rate and memory depth. The guy is always pushing certain brands. I had a RIGOL and it was a mess & I returned it. Supposedly it was missing the latest firmware update but I don't need the grief. Plus it was more expensive than other Chinese brands. I have an ATTEN and HANTEK & have found both to be terrific and they were less cost than the RIGOL I returned.

@carnews333 Yes, you need an oscilloscope if you are into electronics. No, you don't need to spend $10,000. A $350 Rigol will do you just fine. $50 ebay 20MHz dual channel analog will also do you just fine.

I bought a Tektronix 2247A scope for my first scope but, it didn't work. The CRT works perfect on it & I'm hoping to get the thing fixed eventually! So I bought a new Siglent SDS 1102CML+. Turns out that It is officially my first (working) scope now. It's a total nightmare trying to figure the damn thing out! I feel like I need to take a complete course on how to properly run it. Thank God there's an automatic trigger button & I do know how to zoom in and zoom out. I do know how to compensate the probe/s. I was able to look at the noise of my switching adjustable DC power supply DP305A. Buck converter. I was experimenting with a small capacitor trying to take the ripple away. I found out when you move the probes farther away from the capacitor, it stoppes working & the Ripple will come back. so I'm not quite sure how to filter the Ripple coming out of the switching power supply permanently unless you put a filter capacitor right there on the breadboard by the ripple? Electricity reminds me of a roaring river moving Through the Wires splashing back and forth in the wires. The capacitor slows it down right there around it but, as soon as you get further Downstream from the capacitor, it starts splashing around again. I don't know? I'm a newbie. is that kind of how it works?

@gotaimabara You are taking my comment out of context. I was talking about the small sample memory in the lowest cost "cheap" Tektronix scopes. I did not mean "cheap" as in quality. Yes, the Rigol is better value for money than the equivalent Tektronix scope for most beginners.

Hi David, I've following all your blogs and I really enjoy it! I have one suggestion for you, it would be possible if you post step by step how to use an oscilloscope? For beginners like me! I finally bought the Hantek DSO 1060 and hope works for small electronic projects. Regards, Gustavo
@BionicBadgerFromHell13 жыл бұрын
@gotaimabara You're forgetting that RIGOL makes some of the oscilloscopes for Agilent, whereas most of these no-name Chinese multimeters are just that: cheap no-name Chinese multimeters. If we could verify that some brand of Chinese multimeter were equivalent to a high-quality brand, then by all means we would go for it.
@ivanv75413 жыл бұрын
You should do a more in-depth tutorial about oscilloscopes in general. Now I know about trigger hold-off but what else? Afrotechmods has a tutorial but it's very basic and I have figured all of that out already.
@EEVblog13 жыл бұрын
@jewishcrimenetwork They are different beasts. The Rigol is a more versatile instrument for general use, as it offers (poor compared to the 2246) analog performance, and single shot digital sampling the 2246 doesn't have.
@XtianApi3 жыл бұрын
So how do people work on circuits that have computer processors in them or Wi-Fi or things like that better in the gigahertz range?
@gbowne111 жыл бұрын
Considering you can easily do the firmware upgrade to the Rigol DS1052 to upgrade it per the video instruction here, I'd bet it's much better to buy the Rigol.

Dave,, you do know that if you shipped everything in your workshop you dont need or use to me, you would have much more room in your place to put better kit from more garage sales etc. Just think how awesome that would be and how much fun you could have, we could also see you open the boxes and have fun. I'm very happy for your video. I'm very beginner in oscilloscope. I wonna buy a oscilloscope that will measure high frequency like 2 or 3 GHz. Now question is that If i buy a oscilloscope with size of 1G Digital Storage Oscilloscope 100MHz bandwidth, will it be able to measure the high frequency. If it doesn't than which oscilloscope is suitable for me?
@SianaGearz8 жыл бұрын
Measuring high frequency signals is difficult. A scope that you have chosen will be blind to signal completely. A $40000 Tek DPO7000C will be able to measure the signal, but considering the capacitive loading of the probe, you will not be able to trust the result completely. What kind of signal? What kind of conclusions do you need to make on it? If heterodyne probe adapter is an option, you can use a cheap scope too.

I just have to reply, Dave states that Tektronix suggest sampling of 2.5x or 5x when in fact the entry oscilloscopes sample at the same as the Rigol he had in his hand. It is obvious how anti Tektronix he is... One should really take what he says with a grain of salt...

'Won' an HP54201A digitizing scope for $83 to my door on ebay. Specs say- 'Dual 200 mega sample/ second allowing 50MHz single shot wave form capture.' I am repairing electronic (musical) organs for recirculation into the community. With the advent of Craigslist the market is flooding with low dollar organs that were once high dollar. Most are analog transistor oscillator card ( personal favorite ala' Ray Manzarek), opamp based. Save for tone wheel Hammonds, tubes are rare. Is this scope OK?

is the Rigol DS1052E Digital Oscilloscope 50MHz 1 GSa/sec 2 channels plus USB storage a good one for working with tesla coils work and things around that leval
@OpenGL4ever7 жыл бұрын
It depends on what you want o measure and at which frequency. For example, if you want to make music with your tesla coils and measure the frequency, it will be good enough. Because the sound frequency we are able to hear goes only to around < 20 KHz and the typical low cost soundcard has only a frequency of 48-96 KHz, thus a 50 MHz Oscillosckope with 1 GSA/s will be more than adequate. With a sample at a frequency of 96 KHz you will be able to achive 10416 samples per waveform with this Oscilloscope. That is more than plenty enough. The formula is 1000^3 SA/s / 96*1000 Hz = 10416 samples On the other side, with only 1 Million measuring points, you might be able to sample only 1*1000^2 /201416 samples = 96 waveforms at that resolution. If you decrease the resolution, which means storing less samples per waveform, the number of waveforms or duration increases.

Oh come on man. "Cheap scopes like Tektronix"? They cost 10 times more because they are 10x better. Rigol is a knock off they ripped from the contract work they do for Agilent. Perhaps the Rigol is not that bad for the price and you're trying to convey that message. But it's coming across as a biased Rigol infomercial. You then post: "There is an ad on my eevblog dot com website for the Rigol from an Australian supplier, only $399. Tell'em I sent you.". No biased, eh?
