@@BrennanCh06 Exactly. Snyder clearly shows a lack of understanding of verisimilitude (the believability/plausibility of a fictional work within the bounds of its own genre); essentially how good a job the story does at allowing us to buy in and suspend disbelief. Incidentally, Richard Donner understood verisimilitude perfectly when making his Superman film; he even kept around a picture of Superman holding a sash with the word "verisimilitude" on it to remind himself that, "he intended to approach the story of the fantasy superhero in a way true to the source material that would make it feel intuitively real to the audience within the context of the story's world".

If they wanted to make Batman dark and gritty then you can't have Superman *also* be dark and gritty. It stylistically works for Batman since he's based off old school noir fiction, and has some of the darkest shit in regards to comics. Superman is the exact opposite and is about hope and optimism. The movie should have played with this (Man of Steel as well, but fuck it) and made Clark a goofy, well meaning guy. Not "the burdened messiah." Animated series Superman was really chill and down to Earth. And people loved that about him.

Ideally, a movie should have Superman/Clark Kent be more of a normal guy than Batman/Bruce Wayne. Yes the alien with godlike abilities is the more normal one because he's supposed to be this well-adjusted good guy. Whereas Batman is not. Having them both be these weird and gritty versions of themselves doesn't work because then Superman's whole origin story is kinda meaningless as is Batman's existence because now Superman is just Batman-lite with powers.

The only good movies DC has are the animated ones. They’re also only 90mins so they’re nice and concise. The extension to Justice League that the Snyder Cut is going to get will most likely be 95% filler. In 4 hours you could watch 3 DC animated movies (I’m sure there’s a 1h only movie) with better characterizations, plot, and executions (the skillful kind, not the decapitating kind). I have no idea why they don’t get the writers from ANY of those animated movies to do a live-action one. Most directors don’t even write the movies they direct anyways. Heck, they got a trailer house to edit Suicide Squad instead of movie editors. If they’re going to let anyone take a whack at it, might as well give the animated movie staff a chance. They definitely can’t do worse, and even if the managed to, it would just be par for the course anyway.

Why didn't Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman though of a better plan to kill Doomsday? Twin Perfect: _"They didn't have enough time to think"_ literally a SUPER Man and a WONDER Woman with the "World's Best Detective" couldn't think fast... huh...
@papershadow
@papershadow 2 жыл бұрын
I'd also like to note, one of Twin Perfect's defenses of Batman luring Doomsday into the city is that he says out loud and explicitly to Wonder Woman "there is a weapon here that can kill [Doomsday]" So by his own reference, 2 of the 3 characters are aware that a weapon to kill Doomsday is in the vicinity, and then this glowing green spear gets brought out despite otherwise not being similar to the rest of Batman's employed gadgetry. Would Wonder Woman not immediately think "this is the weapon"? Just present the spear, say "use this," then immediately go back to trying to beat down Doomsday or see if you can tire him out or make some kind of opening if you really can't stop and explain much. Also ignoring whether or not they explain it weakens Clark, would Diana not be the ideal person to give it to? She has super human abilities on a level that compares to Superman in this battle, and there is confirmation she was trained in weaponry with the Amazons (even if I assume spears were not among them for her), so I would assume she'd be the most capable to use it, especially since her weaponry is a major part of her combat ability compared to Superman being strong physically and punching his enemies rather than trying to use an object as the rest of the Doomsday fight and any other events people knew of like the Zod fight could correlate. That said, it weakening Clark is a relevant factor, because then it's not even just a matter of senseless self-sacrifice or anything. Clark using the weapon when it compromises his powers (which he clearly needs to stand up to Doomsday) decreases the chances they succeed at using it against him, and if Clark gets himself killed her might have also just doomed Diana and Bruce to an unwinnable battle for all he can be sure of. So besides being stupidly dangerous for him this is actively hurting their chance at success. tl;dr Wonder Woman knows this Spear can kill Doomsday and Clark gets severely weakened by it, yet he chooses to take it instead of trying to give his powerful ally an opening.

02:20:19 -- One of my favourite things about EFAP is when Rags and MauLer who haven't read the comics, freestyle and brainstorm and actually come up with what happens in the comics. That's how bad the movie is. In the comics, Lex actually approaches Bruce Wayne in order to help rebuild Metropolis. This is consistent with Lex's care for his public image. Lex appears philanthropic and a good guy for rebuilding the city. Meanwhile Lex really wants grants, money and political power from the government, along with a real estate empire to keep the whole city under his thumb. Meanwhile, he manipulates Bruce into hating Superman and then shares Kryptonite and Lexcorp and Wayne Tech develop Kryptonite weapons together.

It’s weird how Rags feels compelled to take these little pot-shots at ATLA when he’s seen so little of the show, and it’s really ironic when he does so just after lambasting other people for having inaccurate references (as he does both here and in their coverage of Filmento’s video on Underwater). The scene where Zuko, Azula, Ty Lee and Mai talk at the end of the beach episode isn’t just “characters blatantly expositing their entire motivations” (though, of course, if you saw that single scene with practically zero context, you might be led to believe that). Sure, the stuff with Ty Lee and Mai (two side characters) is pretty on-the-nose and isn’t *as* supported by what we’ve seen before, but the focus in this scene is on Zuko, and his foil, Azula, who we’ve already learned tons about in more subtle ways. Isn’t the argument for “subtlety in writing” based on the idea that exposition is bad, not exposition? I generally like subtle writing, but sometimes it makes sense for characters to discuss things openly and bluntly - and by the time viewers reach this point in the show (nearly halfway through the third season), we’ve already been shown plenty of each of the characters involved in this scene. I just find it bizarre that someone would consider it unnaturally expository for a bunch of close friends on the cusp of adulthood to sit around and discuss their fears and insecurities. All four of the characters in the “beach scene” have already been well-established by then, and we know their personalities and motivations. And having learned a lot about them through the rest of the show, we then get insight into their respective characters when they open up to each other about past experiences that have shaped them into the people they are today, finally cracking and pouring out the insecurities that their society expects them to suppress and ignore. Simply dismissing it as “characters sitting around explaining their entire motivations” is as unfair as dismissing the Council of Elrond as “a bunch of characters sitting around explaining everything about the world.” Exposition is only bad when forced, and it is not forced in either of these situations. But, then again, if you haven't actually something, I wouldn't expect you to be able to discuss it accurately...

I took the main point of that scene as Zuko' conscience catching up to him and a point of him understanding that his father's respect and being honored by the Fire Nation wasn't worth what it cost. I thought it helped set up Azula's perception of being disliked by her mother (referenced in Zuko alone) as a justification she uses for her actions which also helps set up her loss of sanity in the finale. I think Rags is being a little unfair here.

Well said. If the scenes were just for those secundary characters to say that, talk about themselves to tell the audience their origin, I would agree. But it is not the porpuse. Providing insight about them is just a pathway to reach the real endgame of the scene: Zukos conscience catching up and Azula vulnerabily due to her total lack of hoe human relations works outside of "the job". And it is not like it was a blunt clarification of two character that recently arrived to the plot. Those two were already there for a season. Them being that specific with their closest friends to confirm something already suggested is not like the worst case of "exposition" or anything, or you can say the same about the entire Boromir performance in Elronds council. You could argue that they could have thought another way to do so, but at it is, it is OK.

Only in the case of Star Wars, the comics they cite are at least in the same cannon, as messed up as that cannon may be. Even then, I don’t think an outside source should be considered a good argument to justify flaws in a movie, whether it’s canon or not. Like, in the case of the shitty Star Wars movies, the LORE may be intact and consistent by including the books, but the MOVIE is still flawed. A good enough script should be able to stand on its own without needing books or shows to duct tape it. Movies are movies, books are books, and shows are shows. They can all be related, but none of them should completely rely on another to be consistent.

1:27:48 - "If I were his assistant, you know..." That long pause there left me in stitches and I'm glad nobody followed up on it - that Lex blew up Mercy, leaving him without an assistant to question his actions and motivations.

Good lord, this debate made me so mad to watch. I cannot stand guys like Twin Perfect in conversation, nonetheless in a debate.

I do not get from wgere this trend of suddenly liking the DC came from. When the movies came out they got hated and forgotten but now they suddenly reemerge. It this cuz of the pandemic, are people that bored?

I think it's because everyone else went to watch good movies and now the small amount of fans that loved it originally have a director's cut coming out and they are trying to throw it in everyone's faces and have to be put down again.

I always love it when you ask someone to give you a general description of what what they judge films on, and then they respond with: "OH! So you want me to define in perfect exacting terms what my existential criteria for attaining knowledge is huh?! You want me to split the atom and unlock the secrets of the universe right here in front of you!? Well I just cant do that, you demand to much sir!" From now on whenever anyone asks me if we need Milk, or if I think the neighbors are being to loud with their music im going to turn on the questioner and say "WHAT DO I LOOK LIKE, THE AKASHIC RECORDS OF REALITY ITSELF?! I CANT TELL YOU THOSE THINGS, ONLY YOU CAN DEFINE THEM!"
