"Kylo could crush Luke, that dude is so buff." Yoda: Size matters not. Look at me, judge me by my size do you? And well you should not. For my ally is the force, and a powerful ally it is. Rey didn’t beat Luke tho. He chose not to fight back. If you notice he hesitates with the force before falling down. He remembered what happened the last time he confronted a confused child so it was time for a different approach. For a man who believes the legacy of Jedi is failure based on their actions, Luke here is given a second chance to not repeat the same mistake. A sort of mini redemption.

Just finished it for the first (and last) time. After about an hour I had to speed up playback otherwise I was not going to make it. Funnily, listening at 1.25x speed made it sound pretty apparent that Lee was just trying to piss everyone off through positivity towards TLJ, no matter how stupid it made him sound. Whether he was doing it intentionally or not, the constant goalpost shifting and shrugging off being cornered with "well, whatever," or "that's your opinion" did not endear him to me. I'm sure he'd quickly reply he didn't come to EFAP to make fans. "Whatever." The troll was well fed but in the end I think I just pity him.

I have several friends like this where having a discussion with them is actually painful because they are too dumb to understand how to formulate a logically consistent argument. Instead they deliberately avoid defining any terms, OR even if they do the definitions conveniently change to suit their argument in the moment irrelevant to how it impacts their previous statements. These discussions then become a series of Schrodinger's Cat experiments in which every argument they make is simultaneously every variation of the same argument with every definition of every word being used and every time you open one of the boxes you discover a contradictory outcome that retroactively alters the states of the previous boxes until finally you open the final box, the other boxes disappear and all that's inside is a note that reads "Look, I don't actually care what you think and I'm not going to change my mind. I just want to win the argument."

Having finished the archive I have to say, while Lee's arguments are infuriating, the man himself is so good natured it's literally impossible to hate him even if I hate his arguments or lack thereof. @@GabeSweetMan If he enjoys the film for superficial reasons then there's no reason to believe he would be an unpleasant individual. I mean it as no offence when I say that there's no reason to expect a dumb person will act like a child or a in a mean spirited manner. The problem comes with the ideological types who seem to enjoy TLJ as a piece of propaganda. They specifically enjoy those aspects that actively make the film terrible. The analogy I thought of is that it's the difference between liking Stalin because of his facial hair and liking Stalin because he murdered counter revolutionaries and starved millions of people. The latter is worrying because the person likes Stalin for precisely the reasons he is a monster. The former is so irrelevant that all I can do is say "ok".

@@Saddamuel I agree. A fair distinction. It's becoming increasingly rare to find someone who is not ideologically driven in their opinions these days and it's nice to finally encounter someone on the opposite side of the spectrum in terms of taste who actually believes what they believe not because of some ulterior motive (i.e. the "dogwhistle" argument) but because they genuine care about the thing they are arguing in favor of, albeit poorly.

It seems to me that Maj0r Lee is a very emotional, in the moment viewer; he's concerned with how he's feeling in that moment, and he eats up all the cues that movie makers use to get the audience to feel how they want them to feel. I legitimately never thought I would witness someone who exemplified the pure, Platonic embodiment of this concept, but that is pretty much all this stream was. Even a moment's consideration showed him how wrong he was, but he still went "yeah, but in that moment, I felt really emotional, and that was their goal so it was good". I think the prime example is when he says he shouted in the theater when Snoke got cut in half. Listen to his justification for that (2:24:33) and tell me that doesn't scream "emotionally manipulated".

Should meet my dad. Asshole is so surface level on the movies and shows he watches he considers it a plus if he can fall asleep in an opening scene, wake up on the closing one, and miss nothing. He also hated when a Netflix original series developed an over arching, more serialized format instead of episodic. Also also, he demands you be able to summarize any show, movie, whatever in one sentence. Example, A Midsummer Night's Dream is summed up by him as "girl falls for a guy on the wrong side of the tracks".
@quietone2674
@quietone2674 2 жыл бұрын
The thing that frustrated me about him was how MauLer and Rags kept pointing out plot-breaking flaws and him just saying "that doesn't matter." I think you're right that he's an emotional viewer, rather than a logical one. The weird start where he defended Battlefront 2 is kind of indicative of that. I don't think he's a dishonest guy, or even a super dumb one, but that he's easily emotionally manipulated and cares more about the feelings something gives him than its structure. It does make me wonder what flaws he *does* think matter, and I think any one he picked out would tie to his emotional investment. In fact, I think there's proof of that in the stream: when MauLer shared Luke reacting to Han's death he was trying to justify cutting it for time, but also seemed to agree it should have been kept in the movie. That scene has a huge emotional impact in it and he admitted he'd have liked to see it in the movie.

@Tom Ffrench Even if those deleted scenes were included and did in fact imply something romantic or sexual, that would still be bad writing as there is absolutely no logic or justification for Rey liking or falling in love with Kylo. At best you could argue Kylo wants to possess her. This would be like Padme falling in love with Anakin 10x faster than she already did (which was already considered rushed), but with the addition of Anakin killing someone very close to her and being a mass murderer tyrant. Essentially Padme falling for post-order 66 Anakin/Vader in basically half a day. How does this make sense to you, simply because there was a scene of them being somewhat physical? You realize bad writing exists right And just because something does happen or can be strewn in some way does not mean it was good writing, or has good logic or justification. A writer can just simply fuck up, easy.

I got the very strong impression that Maj0r Lee only wanted to discuss subjective opinions, because he desperately tried to avoid even acknowledging objectiveity by changing the subject or by trying to discuss objectivity via his feelings. Sometimes I got the impression he didn't even want to discuss his own opinions because he kept referencing what other people feel. Argumentum ad populum I suppose. I guess it's better then Just Write who just plain doesn't understand art and has this war on objectivity, but this sort of hampers the debate when Maj0r Lee doesn't want to say anything definitive.

Maj0r Lee is the embodiment of disingenuous argumentation. He Gish Gallops constantly, states false thing as true with complete confidence, answers questions that were never asked to avoid answering your actual questions, moves the goalposts constantly, and worst of all will admit that you are right, then continue on as if he hasn't just been proven wrong. The last bit is the worst as it reeks of "I'll say you're correct to get you to stop talking about this, not because you've actually convinced me" thinking. He'll agree that you're correct, and then continue on as if he was the one who was correct instead, throwing any argument he can, no matter how vacuous, at you to try to 'win'. Also, it's probably for the best that he wasn't there. He would've had an aneurysm over the sheer stupidity of this guy's arguments. Hell, it made MY head hurt, and I was just listening.

It's funny that Rose starts off preventing Finn from saving what he loves instead of fighting what he hates (leading to losing a large number of the Resistance at the end of a futile sub-plot), then at the end stops Finn from fighting what he hates instead of saving what he loves (I'm not sure what he loves at the end, to be honest), causing the Resistance to become vulnerable. Oh, and Finn's wrong while Rose is right despite the outcomes of her actions.

Professor_Tickles 92 a sacrifice that would’ve saved the resistance: pointless? Btw that doesn’t justify Rose’s actions, when she crashed into Finn the chances of them both dying were so high but nah it’s fine because plot armour. Also Rose’s sisters sacrifice was not pointless, her sacrifice led to the destruction of the biggest threat to the resistance that the first order currently possessed
@Prof_Tickles92
@Prof_Tickles92 4 жыл бұрын
Deus Vult Finn’s sacrifice was pointless because the beat was already disintegrating his speeder. He’d have been vaporized before he hit it. Paige’s sacrifice did take down an imperial ship but the victory was in vain because Poe’s reckless actions cost a great deal of resistance soldiers. So they had a greater net loss.
@owainglyndwrlastprinceofwa2486
@owainglyndwrlastprinceofwa2486 4 жыл бұрын
Professor_Tickles 92 1. That first statement is quite simply false. Finns speeder was being melted by the beam but was still in tact when he was within a couple feet from the laser and would’ve absolutely made it. Plus that just raises the question on why Finn was even still alive after Rose crashed into him considering his speeder was already melting, the crash should’ve left him in pieces scattered across the ground. 2. When the stakes involve destroying the biggest threat to the resistance currently being used by the empire, losing a bombing squadron is absolutely worth it and Poe made the right decision. If Poe has listened to Leia the bombing squadron still would’ve been destroyed considering they were already within range of the ship and are incredibly weak, they would’ve been gunned down anyway and nothing would’ve been gained, plus the biggest threat to the resistance, the most powerful ship owned by the empire would still be in the air as an active threat.

Oh thank god. I came into this cold as I've never heard of him and I thought it was an in joke where the EFAP boys get a friend on to make terrible arguments for a laugh. After a while I realised this was a real guy but I'm glad to see that there is so debate as to whether he might actually be a troll. It's either that or he's not particularly intelligent (I mean no offence by that). He enjoys the movie because it's one thing after another and there's a bunch of action. As far as I can tell he would have enjoyed almost anything and that is fine. Some people like WWE, some like Game of Thrones, some like Shakespeare, some like all of the above. I much prefer someone who likes TLJ for superficial reasons rather than an ideologue who sees their politics reflected in a movie and enjoys it as a piece of propaganda.

After 45 minutes I was done: What Luke could have done: 1) Used his piloting skills (remember those cause Ryan didn’t) and X-wing to destroy the Laser Ram 2) used his contracts to arrange a escape (aka he doesn’t have to arrive alone) 3) lured off the enemy forces by letting them hear him call for any one and heading off 4) could have confronted the walkers forcing them to fight him and stop there advance using their blind spots to hit them 5) used his Jedi skills to open the back area the Foxes showed to open the way for the rebels so they could hide in other places on the planet 6) offer to surrender if they let the rebels go 7) Offer to Huks that once he confronts Kylo that the Order blast both of them and he take over (of course Luke is not going to let that happen to him but them Kylo would not know about the deal changing) 8) He could go to lightspeed in front of the enemy and use the light speed ram to wipe them all out (right holdo?) 9) he could have worked with Leia and they organize a defense within the base using his abilities, the Force and skills of a lifetime to make the First Order pay for every inch until they are forced back 10) he could have pulled Finn out of his fighter at the last minute letting the Finn’s fighter destroy the ram and then using Force run to run both back to the base And I am. It trying hard with ideas of what he could have done if he had gone to the plant in person. There are loads of things that could happen besides Luke (Jake) killing Kylo or dying if he goes to the planet. This is not worth my time ... certainly not 6 hours is this is what I am going to get from these TLJ defenders/lovers

Kylo ended up killing Snoke because RJ had backed his story into a corner by then. Once Rey got to the throne room there's no way to get her back out again apart from ripping off ROTJ by having the apprentice turn on the master. And there was no way that RJ could have gotten away with properly subverting expectations by killing off Mary Rey at that early stage even if he had wanted to do so.
@shadowapocalypse9012
@shadowapocalypse9012 5 жыл бұрын
46:57 I don't know if these points get brought up but I had to get these out there. First, why is this about Luke taking Kylo down? What about Snoke? You know, the guy even more powerful than Kylo to the point he could Force Skype Kylo and Rey despite not knowing where Rey even was. Second, we see Luke's X-Wing in the water in TLJ but that's it. We don't know if the X-Wing is broken or in perfect condition. All you have to do is write that Luke was stranded and we'd be like "oh so that's why he didn't come to save Han." That's also ignoring when he went to save his friends in ESB and ended up almost caught in the trap laid out for him despite Yoda's warnings that Vader wanted him to attempt a rescue. Edit: MauLer mentioned my first point right after I paused so there's that, but now there's just so much more to say and my brain hurts too much from the sheer bullheadedness.

Major Lee: "Kylo will beat Luke. Look how buff he is" If that is the case then pretty much all Jedi will beat Yoda considering that in comparison to the little green Jedi Master, all other Jedi's are buff as heck! Being a Jedi, a Force sensitive/user, size is not among the top consideration on how powerful they are. Do you even know what you are talking about? If Disney Star Wars stayed true to who Luke Skywalker really is, then even if you let Rey, Kylo and Snoke gang up on Luke, Luke will beat those three easy. Disney Star Wars fucked everything up resulting in a mess of a star wars universe.

I don't know if i can finish this, 50 minutes in and Lee's arguments make me want to scream until only blood comes out. The constant shifting of the goalpost alone would be bad enough but his understanding of story construction is what really hurts me to my core. I have spent the better half of my life trying to learn to write stories , creative writing is my life's goal and almost everything he is saying here is a steaming dump on the discipline. I really, REALLY wish you guys had some more guests who could approach these things from the direct perspective of creators because a whole lot of the shit he is saying just wouldn't fly. You do a good enough job in your responses but there is a particular itch that isn't getting scratched in these streams. Of course I would wish that i would be the one invited on to do it but i know a random youtube comment that probably won't even get read isn't going to lead to anything but you really should at least look at finding some creators who want to get in on the show, because a lot of what these people end up saying would do direct damage to young aspiring writers if taken to heart and there needs to be more pushback against it.

Also, when he said "he is not seeing the female character's point of view" 1-Many women were in Poe's side during the mutiny. 2-Holdo and Leia don't represent their entire gender as Poe/Finn/anyone represents theirs. 3-I find it so stupid to try to force everything into a "Men vs Women" argument.
