I think this might be the case of it didn't even registering, even if people actually fully watched NKB's video fully. I can actually understand that. Man, i actually watched the video there that segment is from. I didn't pay attention to that analogy at all and might've even think it was heartfelt, cause of the music. Now i can't unhear it, but same could've happened to people with sad thing about Emil. They heard the music and the speech, but people might not even realize what it actually was and how weird that segment is without actively trying to think about it.

Regarding the whole Design document drama: What is concerning to me as a programmer is how vague Emil is regarding his use of a design document. I absolutely guarantee you that the engineers at bethesda have extensive centralised documentation about every piece of code they write. Meanwhile the designers own documentation becomes "completely outdated" during the project? I know how hard it is to maintain a coherent design vision during development, but it is a necessary evil to keep everyone of your designers on board with your project. If your design document is at any point outdated, you have failed at managing your project.
@Horvath_Gabor11 ай бұрын
Okay, but here's the thing: Starfield has a very coherent design philosophy. Too much, even, as the dogged adherence to the hard-sci-fi NASA-punk aesthetic and the "realistic" environments outside the thematic hubs (read: industrial brutalism and barren planets. because those are the only things that makes sense in our not-too-distant-future) are a consistent yoke that's behind all the complaints about the game being "boring". That kind of thing doesn't happen on accident, so I don't believe for a second there wasn't a bunch of internal design documents at Bethesda. Maybe not one big text file on a common server, but there sure as hell had to be something, because I sincerely doubt it was just one guy running around all the departments and whipping them down in person every time they did something that was against his vision of the game that morning.
@danielff384411 ай бұрын
@@Horvath_Gabor aesthetic is a part of the design philosophy, but definitely not the major one. I am more so talking about gameplay mechanics and quest/npc/worldbuilding intersections. It is very easy to get everyone to agree and follow a certain aesthetic, you simply follow concept art which is produced during the design phase. You dont need huge documentation for that. However, it is very difficult to get everyone to agree to certain world-building- and story-aspects, while also incorporating gameplay choices into your design decision. I will also disagree that the planets are barren, and i think this highlights my point pretty well. Almost every planet you land on has many many existing human-built structures, which goes completely against the theme of space exploration. You are less exploring space, and more so dungeon diving into ruins/outputs like in TES or Fallout. It is a weird disjoint between gameplay mechanics (barren planets would be boring, you are right about that one), and story/themes. They want you to live the space explorer fantasy, while also recognizing that barren worlds would not appeal to a wide market.
@Horvath_Gabor11 ай бұрын
@@danielff3844 But the thing is that those core aesthetic/setting decisions affect literally every other element in the game by posing restrictions on them. If the core design principle is "this game is set in the foreseeable hard-sci-fi future, with only humans, and in realistic space-industrialist environments", it trickles down to the rest of the game, Factions: You can only have humans, who have human concerns and goals, so you can't have memorable stories like a bunch of scientist brains in robot bodies kept in bay by another scientist in a robot body playing the role of an evil overlord to keep them in bay, fearing how much damage they could do if left loose, because it's not "realistic". It's telling that probably the most memorable quest of Starfield was the Vanguard one about an insane conspiracy involving mind-controlling alien monsters. Environments: Space-habitats and outposts follow the same templates, just like how modern factories and industrial plants are alike, which affects the gameplay itself by limiting environmental variety. This is not only "boring", but it also makes players less incentivized to explore them, while varied backdrops would also make the same combat mechanics and fight feel less samey, effecting the core explore-combat-loot loop of the game. Cool-factor and equipment: Spaceship interiors and equipment all has to follow the same minimalist and NASA-punk aesthetics, so they end up looking clunky and not very "cool" (as opposed to the fantasy gear of TES, or the varied retro-futuristic items of Fallout), which also applies to all the equipment and loot in the game. This once again affects players' motivations to get involved in the core loop, because if you aren't going to find a kooky weapon or a nice looking piece of armor after clearing a whole base, just more generic guns and space-suits with higher numbers, then what's the point? Enemy variety: Because humans are the only intelligent enemies, you'll only have them to fight, with the occasional robots here and there, and they all look the same, because they are wearing the same type or "realistic" space suits, and using the same weapons as the player. In other words, there's too little variety on that front, and the different human factions having little identity in combat (e.g. how some Fallout factions are more likely to use guns, others are more likely to use melee, while yet others would use explosives). Exploration: Real space is huge, with tons of barren and uninhabited planets, so to be realistic, the game's space has to be huge and mostly barren as well. Yet, because this is a Bethesda game, the players have to be able to explore them as well, but because there are no intelligent aliens with their own architecture, or weird and wacky "unrealistic" environment, it results in the same industrialist outposts, refineries, and caves being everywhere, because there's nothing else to choose from while maintaining the "realism". People online have been making a huge clamor about the loading screens, and the lighting engine, and non-important NPCs looking floompy at times, but I rarely ever see these things addressed, outside of maybe saying that the game was "boring" or it "didn't click with them for some reason". I think these are the game's real issues, and some of these are definitely going to be fixed by the modding community in time (including the god-awful progression mechanics), but it just annoys me that people seem to be so bogged down in the online buzzwords they seem to skim over this core design decision that cascades down to every element of the game.

@@Horvath_Gabor i think starfield aesthetics is dissapointing with how vast potential space exploration tech design is. i wonder if bethesda actually do research about Nasa and what they discover in space
@TeamICOS11 ай бұрын
@@Horvath_Gabor But in reality, that whole "realism" mindset result is due to a lack of imagination and world experience. I would tell someone who told me that "all industrial sites look the same" that they need to travel more. People get up to some weird shit when they give creative freedom to architects and engineers. Considering the complaints I am hearing from people in the modding community, I think this was an excuse because of problems with the game engine. They were forced to limit the scope of everything and didn't see a way to code themselves out of it.

NKB mentioning the Doom Bible is kind of hilarious because he tries to use it as a point about how it's an antiquated practice from the 90s, only pointing to its age, when he could instead have pointed out how the document was written by Tom Hall, who was fired early on in development, and the rest of Id Software ended up not really using the stuff in the document at all. Then I made the mistake of looking up people's reactions on KZbin and Reddit, and I was baffled by how everyone treated this altogether mostly inoffensive and mediocre game like it personally shot their dog and shat on their carpet. I mean, disappointment is one thing, deserved criticism is another, but what the internet discourse has done to this game is borderline mental.

The explanation for the youtube slash reddit reaction is very simple. Bethesda fanboy's played damage control when this game came out, saying it was the best thing ever, and if you didn't know, they even attacked a youtuber Mauler knows over it, AZ, for making a video complaining about the pronouns in the game, and mocking the game as well for the inclusion of pronouns in the game. As for you 6-7/10, all I have to say about that is it seems like your using game reviewer metrics, because to me a mediocre and inoffensive game is a 4-5/10. But that might just be because I dislike mondern day game scores, because everything is a 9/10 or a 10/10, and I just want game scores to actually reflect the games.

@@dylansepper Yeah, that's the narrative, but I've never actually seen it in actio. Sure, the journos circled the wagons, and AZ got taken out of context for the rage-bait articles and reaction-content, but even the NoSodium Reddit page of the game didn't have any players who said the game was perfect, just that the outrage was overblown and that they weren't bothered by the common complaints, like the fast travel system. Honestly, I think the online hate-machine had more to do with the game coming out sandwiched between BG3 and CP2077 2.0, two games that were online darlings (for good reason, but still) that Starfield was compared to all the time, even if the comparisons weren't necessarily fair. As for the rating, that's a 6-7/10 on an actual 10-point scale. I know the whole "IGN-scale" is a meme, but let me ask you this: when was the last time when you played a genuinely bad and broken game? We're not even talking about Gollum levels here, but some true, non-functional, asset-flip trash you bought for actual money? I guess the answer is never, because that's how most people are. The vast majority of gamers just don't ever play any games in the 1-3 range (except maybe for making fun of them, if you have a Twitch/KZbin channel), because we're on the internet where everyone can do their five minutes of research. For all practical purposes, the true range is 4-10, where 4-5 is a bad game game that still has some merit, 6-7 is a flawed game that's otherwise functional, without any deal-breakers, 8-9 are good games with flaws and problems that are easy to overlook, while 10 are overwhelmingly good games.

@@dylansepper Okay, so my initial response apparently got shadowbanned (I have no idea why, unless the word "IGN" is now a swear word). In short, I don't buy that narrative, because I've yet to meet a single player online, even on No Sodium Starfield, who weren't acutely aware of the game's flaws, but just didn't mind them. As for AZ getting singled out, I don't think that has anything to do with fanboys, and more to do with the ragebait-articles and react-content taking him out of context. That said, the internet is a big place, so some corporate fanboys probably did act up somewhere, but I don't believe they were a big enough cultural force to warrant the ongoing "reaction". Now, on the topic of the rating, that's a 6-7/10 on what I consider a practical 7-point scale. I know the whole "IGN-ratings" is a meme, but let me ask you this: when was the last time when you played a genuinely bad and broken game? We're not even talking about Gollum-style unfinished AA games here, but some true, non-functional, asset-flip trash? That you bought for actual money? I guess the answer is never, because that's how most people are. The vast majority of gamers just don't ever play any games in the 1-3 range (except maybe for making fun of them, if you have a channel), because we're on the internet where everyone can do their five minutes of research, so differentiating between a 1 and a 3 is entirely pointless. For all practical purposes, the true range is 4-10, where 4-5 is a bad game game that still has some merit that some people may appreciate, 6-7 is functional game with obvious flaws, but without any deal-breakers, 8-9 are good games with flaws and problems that are easy to overlook, while 10 are overwhelmingly good games. On this scale I use, Starfield comfortably slots in somewhere around 6, and I'm pretty sure modding will take it up to around 8. For comparison, that's where I'd rate Fallout 4 as well, while vanilla Skyrim would be around 7 that's taken up to a 10 by mods.
