Well palpatine did get the prequels to flesh out his character, granted the odds of a Snoke prequel is nonexistent
@magicianofd84346 жыл бұрын
True, but I'd argue that Palpatine never needed to be expanded to the same degree that Snoke does. While the prequels certainly developed Palpatine a much more interesting character, we didn't really need them to understand who Palpatine was and what role he played in the Star Wars universe. On the other hand, we know next to nothing about Snoke other than he's super stronk, he's got a messed up face, he's kind of arrogant, and his origin is a mysterious plot hook that's never elaborated upon.
@Jdudec3676 жыл бұрын
I disagree about not needing to know anything about Palpatine...atleast give us a name...like with Snoke
@magicianofd84346 жыл бұрын
I'm not trying to say that Palpatine didn't need expanding man, I just think that Palpatine was a better established character in the original trilogy than Snoke was in the current one. Sure there were a lot things we didn't know about Palpatine when he died, but at least that information wasn't vital to understanding the current state of the Star Wars galaxy during that trilogy. Which is effectively the opposite for Snoke, and why I feel he's so much worse than Palpatine.

Normally, I try to be very impersonal, rational, and precise with my criticisms of TLJ, along with the other Disney films. But you know what? I've now had enough. Star Wars was enormous in my life. It was the first and strongest connection I ever had to my own father. It taught me about the basics of plot, character development, conflict, and many other important parts of writing. It touched my entire worldview and, with special thanks to the prequels (they have their merits, okay?) I came to a deeper understanding of human nature, politics, and war itself. I fucking loved this series. I had dozens of books, played every game I could find, and basically devoted my years in high school to becoming a completely insufferable know-it-all about the EU. This world meant a lot to me, and I eagerly looked forward to sharing it with my kids. Now look at this fucking mess! This is what comes after VI? FUCK this shit, I HATE it. It damages so much of what I loved, and the smug fucks that wrote it are smiling as they call me and people like me basement-dwelling morons. This is why people are angry. TFA and TLJ were fucking awful, but more than that, we are told to eat the shit and say it's delicious. I can't even look at a toy lightsaber anymore without feeling bitter fury and pained longing for the past. I understand that you shouldn't give people so much power over your feelings, but the damn fact is, these movies are an atrocity and their creators and fans are wretched fucks pissing on anyone with a dissenting opinion. That is a fucking huge pill to swallow, and I just fucking won't.

Honestly I remember a time when seeing toy lightsabers in the store would bring back memories of when I was a kid and my brother or my cousins and I would fight with those things until they broke like 15 minutes later, at which point we just duct taped them and went back at it. It was great. I had mauls lightsaber as well as Qui Gons right after the first one came out and eventually got anakins from ROTS that would change from blue to red. Dad had an old vader one we didn’t really give the same treatment as it was practically sacred. I loved Star Wars and I still do. But I definitely do not love Disney or what they have done with this icon of American culture. They were given the metaphorical goose that lays golden eggs as far as movie franchises go and their clumsy handling of the lore and characters because they don’t really understand the content (they care about profit, not the intricacies of the lore) has put us in a scenario where I, who have been a fan of this series for over two decades, and my father, a fan since the originals came out, now are both apathetic to the IP. It’s really tragic and true testament to how unfeeling corporatism and soulless companies like Disney can take something beloved by all and soil it irrevocably.

Curtis Ver Mehren I’m glad I only “liked star wars quite a bit.” I enjoyed the EU much more than the films, and a significant amount of my interest in future films was killed by the prequels. A lot of people say TFA was good and they were wrong. I disliked it, but I could find some likable things in the film, but I didn’t have strong feelings about it. I left the theater after TLJ in a seething, furious rage. I have never been so offended by a film in my entire life. I can only imagine how I would have felt if I was a total gay fanboy about SW

I was fuming from the moment Poe dropped him Mom joke and gave up when Luke tossed his lightsaber. Only watched the rest to see if it could get worsr. And of course it did. After the hyperspace kamikaze bit, I gave up on Disney Wars entirely. By the time I walked out of the theater I had flipped sides so hard my eyes were yellow. For anyone who might be curious, the implications that were generated prior to The Last Jedi for Hyperspace, in as far as I understood it through the rules of the D20 Table Top published by Wizards of The Coast, some of the Extended Universe material, and the wookiepedia, was that a collision in Hyperspace with a physical object would obliterate whatever was in Hyperspace and have relatively minimal effects on the physical object, since they didn't completely exist in Hyperspace. Instead, objects with Mass, in particular objects of extreme mass such as Planets, cast 'Mass Shadows' into Hyperspace, because Hyperspace is partly removed from normal space, like existing in a separate phase of reality, and thus how faster-than-light speeds are possible. This was why it couldn't be used for ramming, due to the object in Hyperspace being a fraction of its original mass in normal space and generating almost no impact. It is very sad to me that most of the stuff mention in the TRO and Quinton video are just not arguments. It is sad that most of the things in the comments of the video are just not arguments. It is almost like people like ad hom but not making rebuttal arguments to the arguments that Rags and MauLer have made. People can't expect us to take them serious when they aren't making an argument. You can boil all of their comments down to "Stop being mean and telling me that this movie isn't good" which in that case prove to me that my arguments are wrong.

At roughly one hour, ten minutes and 25 seconds into Rags' original video it has the line about 'notice the lack of force powers in that fight' and he is clearly talking about the throneroom scene as everyone suspected, not the fight between Luke and Kylo. So Quinton or whatever his name is is a massive liar and TRO's video is pure trash. Not your regularly run of the mill trash, but the purest of trash.

So because someone disliked a video it means it's wrong? Did you watch this podcast? Quinton said that 'Rags claimed it was a contradiction that there were no force powers used in the fight between Luke and Kylo'. He then proceeds to show a clip of Rags saying 'Notice how there were no force powers in that fight', but if you go on Rags' video it is clear he is not talking about the Kylo and Luke fight. Darth vader continously uses the force in combat when he throws shit at Luke in esb and throws his saber in rotj 3.he says the use of force in combat goes against what Yoda said the esb, when the prequels take place before when yoda said that in a time where yoda is regularly shown not to be happy with what the Jedi are becomimg. 4. 4:00 I...I actually think you were giving that commenter too much credit, Rags. He said:"Rags is so smug that I want to slug him in the arm, but then he'd take my threat of violence seriously, say "so you responded to my opinion with violence?", and then try to dissect it for 10 minutes with strawman arguments." From the sound of it, the guy isn't saying that you'd react to his _threat_ of violence by overanalyzing it. In his hypothetical scenario, he's actually punching you...and yet he still seems to think that he'd have the moral high ground because you would "strawman" his act of unprovoked and very real physical violence by... ...actually, I have no idea. But what seems pretty clear is that he isn't saying 'I'd threaten to punch you if I didn't know that you'd turn it into a talking point.' He's just flat out saying that he wants to punch you, and that if he did and you (justifiably) called him out for responding to a verbal opinion with physical violence, it would somehow speak poorly of you. Geez. No wonder this video goes on for five and a half hours when y'all thought it was going to be the shortest one yet. EFAP indeed.

If there's no context, or if actions are taken within some context that do not make ANY sense, even when considering things like fear, anger, survival instinct, etc, then the movie is flawed at a fundamental level.

Why not just write anything, literally anything, regardless of if it makes sense, is good or is even in the same genre, slap the logo on it and call it a day? It’s not like JJ hasn’t done that before. The marketing experiment that was 10 Cloverfield Lane worked perfectly and it’s what they’ve done with Star Wars in terms of its production. For the love of all that is holy, there is no plan for DJ to overhear because POE, speaking to FINN, does not know Holdo's plan to use stealth transports to escape to the planet at that point in the movie. All Poe knows is that they are fueling the transports. He does not know the STEALTH aspect. So, DJ cannot tell the FO to run a "stealth scan." DJ knows what Poe knows. Holdo is fueling the transports. The transports will be shot down. That's why Poe mutinies. Poe, Finn, DJ, and Rose are all UNAWARE of the stealth technology on the transports that "could work," according to Poe later in the movie when he finds out Holdo's plan. Holdo's plan = use STEALTH transports. Holdo's plan use transports. All of this assumes this stealth tech is something new enough that Poe, a high level resistance member and pilot, and Rose, a genius engineer able to surmise the FO hyperspace tracking tech out of the blue, do not know the capability exists. And then assumes DJ is somehow able to just guess that this new stealth capability exists and that the FO also has the technology to be able to scan for it. Or, DJ just lied to the FO about the stealth tech and got lucky?

I don't know how you guys have the patience you do to even acknowledge TRO's video. I couldn't do it if I were in your place. My response would have been "When you actually have something of substance to say on your own behalf we can talk, otherwise IHE is a grown individual and can respond to me for themselves if they disagree with something I have said". I would really like to know if IHE was given the opportunity to review TRO's responses before they were posted. He seems to have become IHE's spokesman with full authority to represent IHE with this very manipulative method he is using for his response videos. TRO needs to start speaking for himself and not speaking on behalf of both IHE and Rags. Rather than listening to a statement in the video and giving his opinion or justification on it like Rags, or speaking for himself like IHE did in his video, he is continually re-stating what Rags says with his own twist and speaking on IHE's behalf (or making extremely optimistic assumptions on IHE's meaning). It's blatantly apparent that this has gotten WAY to personal for TRO and he should have removed himself from it until he can at least look at all of this with SOME level of objectivity and perspective instead of the very slimy tactics he is using at the moment. And it's a real shame, TRO seems like a smart individual, he just has lost that and is spiraling down this rabbit hole that he is probably going to look back at later and regret. As a person not involved in this in any way and enjoying content from IHE, TRO, Rags, and Mauler (Sorry Quinton, you really do just suck and should get off KZbin or find something you can actually speak about intelligently) it is ridiculously apparent to me how off the rails TRO has gotten over this. There are so many reasonable arguments and points TRO and Quentin could have made that would have been SO much better. For example (you can have this one for free Quinton); instead of going into CGI, they could have focused on the fact that The Last Jedi was cinematically beautiful. All the visuals were done excellently, including as part of it the CGI. The camera work was great, color had a strong THEME, etc. Rian obviously has a great eye for that, he just should not be allowed to write anything, EVER. Rags made many good POINTS in his response to IHE that had a lot more substance than IHE's generalizations. TRO at this point is really just down to bickering and "nitpicking" while misrepresenting Rags (and probably IHE). TRO has nothing in this debate and has added absolutely nothing to it and needs to step out of it and accept that he has made this very personal.

1:29:00 Rags is right that force ghosts were basically like a ghost in other forms of fiction: present, able to try to give advice, but not able to physically make things happen. Only one piece of Star Wars media countered this, and it was the alternate universe chapter in the Force Unleashed (where Starkiller became Lord Starkiller and fights Obi-wan Kenobi in Mos Eisley twice, once alive and a second time as a force ghost). Personally, I wrote that off as pure spectacle for the sake of having a challenging boss fight. That and the Force Unleashed is the last thing that anyone should look to when thinking of what one can do with the force (in case anyone thought that pulling a Star Destroyer down from orbit with the force is something that should be taken seriously).

When it comes to ghost depictions in media the rules seem to be that the ghost can interact with the environment but just can’t change the environment in any way. By Quinton’s logic, any film with ghosts that depicts the ghosts walking around with their feet touching the ground breaks the rules. Well walking around as a ghost doesn’t change the environment in any way, but if they were to try to kick a rock that’s in front of them, they wouldn’t be able to do that cause that would change the environment itself. You can sit in a chair as a ghost but you can’t pull a chair out to sit in it. You can sit on a long but you can’t flick a bug off of that log. You can talk but no one can hear you as you can’t produce any sound waves since that would change the air around you.

After getting completely destroyed in the debate with Mauler and Wolf and admitting that they're right, only for him to revert back a short time after and even saying that he hasn't heard a single good argument yet after watching a new video about it, now I think he'll do whatever it takes to protect his thoughts about TLJ being a well made film: By ignoring arguments, dismising them, keeping to ''Muh opinion''! etc.

To me a nitpick is: someone in the background in one shot is NOT wearing a jacket and in a "shot reverse shot "(character 1 talking to character 2 with character 2 off screen ,then we see Character 2 with 1 off screen) sequence exchange we see them wearing the jacket and it's only been 2 seconds. Someone pointing out that is a nitpick Pointing out that's there's no way 2 characters should be able to communicate in the scene as we see it and there's no established way they could be talking, that's not a nit pick to me

A good example of a nitpick I like to use for the idiots is, "Kylo Ren's cape wasn't shown in his reflection during the death star fight in EP 9." THAT'S a real nitpick.

I tend to agree with people like mauler who are interested in fair and logical debate. I tend to strongly disagree with these corporate defenders in hipster clothing because their goal is to spread, and profit from UNFAIR debate tactics. If they succeed in this, free online discourse will devolve into the sort of fake debate we see on MSM.

The first force power Luke learns is to "trust his feelings," e.g., use force prescience to hit things. He trains against the little flying droid with the blast shield on his helmet down and he uses the power to blow up the Death Star without relying on his computer, which is incapable of making the shot as shown before Luke's run. This same power is used by every Jedi/Sith in every battle always to block light sabers and blaster bolts. Even young Anakin uses it to be the only human capable of pod racing in TPM. Presumably, Ben and Vader used this even in their (stage fighting) duel in Episode IV.

It boils my blood when someone equates mental force powers, which are believable when used intuitively, with physical force powers, which break the laws of physics and require you to unmoore yourself from basically everything you've learned about the world. Also, that moment when they both call Mark "Luke". That's the magic of Star Wars.
@forestelfranger6 жыл бұрын
You know the thing about toxic is everyone uses that word but can rarely if ever state what it means. Which is what i will give credit to star wars only for stating what he means when using the word. Even with it being so wide you can be the biggest fanboy ever and still be toxic for disliking even the most minor of things in something. It's like toxic? What does that even mean anymore. Last i checked someone debating doesn't mean they are a poisonous disease that will create the next black plague.
@bigrabii94706 жыл бұрын
It's just another overused word that's lost any meaning. When you call everyone x it starts to mean nothing. And Quintons "debate style" is arguably worse than the black plague. At least the plague actually kills you,Quinton just leaves you with less and less brain cells until you're an empty mindless husk clapping at the next vapid mess Disney shits out.

I really don't understand the confusion regarding Obi-Wan's assertion that he cannot assist Luke in his battle against Vader. It's not condemnation or a refusal due to a belief that Luke has made an incorrect choice; Obi-Wan literally and simply cannot help in the battle. The abilities of a force ghost seemed obvious in the original trilogy: they could appear, with difficulty, as Obi-Wan took years to manifest visibly to Luke on Hoth, and forge tenuous mental connections to offer advice, as in the Death Star trench run. All Obi-Wan is saying is that he cannot fight Vader alongside Luke. He lacks the power to physically affect the world. It made perfect sense until The Last Jedi. Now lore is in a shambles, and we need to invent unintuitive post-hoc explanations for his apparent unwillingness, rather than original obvious inability, to affect the material world physically or manipulate the force in combat. Thanks, Rian.
@jman28566 жыл бұрын
There’s also the fact that thanks to Poppins Leia, MaRey Sue and the broom kid, Luke actually could have easily won the fight with Vader in Empire because..reasons. Now in Empire, it’s not about training or choice, it’s all about waiting for Deus Ex Force to swoop in and save you when it feels like it.
@spooplegeist52605 жыл бұрын
I always got that it was a mix of the two. Obi-Wan doesn’t think it’s a good idea for Luke to go face Vader before finishing training with Yoda, but Obi-Wan knows he can’t stop Luke and that Luke’s heart is in the right place - much like Obi-Wan alludes to being when he was under Yoda’s tutelage. He also is letting Luke know that it’s the first time he’s going into a battle this challenging, and he won’t have Obi-Wan or Yoda to fall back on to save him, because they don’t have the capabilities. The Trench Run was one thing, where advice from Obi-Wan could help, but there’s not much he can do in an actual confrontation. Obi-Wan totally would’ve Lightning Bolted Vader to save Luke if he could.

I love how sitting on the log is supposed to prove that ghosts are physical, but it's ok for them to not fall through the ground. Like, it's a vision, it can assume whatever shape it likes. Given it's supposed to be Luke's vision and Luke knows Obi-Wan as an old man, it actually makes perfect sense for it to sit down even though it has no physical need to.

Why on earth are there not droid controlled hyperspace torpedoes. Oh wait, there are. In legends. Where it’s explained how it’s so expensive to make them, and a weapon to fire them, that they’re literally more costly than the second Death Star. At least I think that’s how the Galaxy Gun worked?
@josebuenrostro14306 жыл бұрын
So big fan of both of you, as a fan of Star Wars and especially the EU want to add my two cents. In the EU force ghosts can materialize and use force abilities however, there are rules. Usually only dark side apparitions are shown able to physically manifest and effect the physical world. This is explained by them unwilling to let go an merge with the force as a whole so they haunt areas usually ones that had meaning to them such as their tombs. Also usually there needs to be a nexus of either light side or darkside energy for them to manifest. Their tombs are usually a nexus do to their own residual darkside energy and that of the other sith who are either buried there or died there trying to explore said tombs. With Jedi it more complicated, because jedi do let go and become one with the force they tend to find it harder to manifest. In the book Truce at Bakura which takes place the day after the party at the end of Return of the Jedi, obi-wan comes to Luke and says this will probably the last time I see you since it's getting harder to stay here, later Anikan appears to Leia to ask for her forgiveness, she rejects him and he says I won't be able to materialize again but know I will be watching from beyond. Jedi can usually only materialize shortly after death or around nexuses of force energy. The first Jedi temple would be a force nexus so it makes sense for yoda to appear there however, I agree the summoning lighting is a problem only sith usually affect the physical world after death, Jedi usually just appear to give sage advice.
