So then would you say a hack would be to go to a school with a small 1L class ?

Even with a smaller 1L class, first-year law school courses are usually pretty big and curved heavily by design. I don't think there is a hack here unfortunately. The only different approach I can think of is spreading out first-year courses for later in your law school journey? That way you take them with more experience under your belt and approach them more effectively. But the down side to doing that is (1) they'll still be curved heavily, and (2) the class will involve a lot of work and studying late in your law school trajectory.
