So what has the biggest influence on strenght of the acid? Charge, electronegativity, size, induction, resonance or hybridization? P.S You videos are awesome. Thank You so much!

Thanks for the great video!! Super helpful! In the pKa-trend theories used in organic chemistry, one trend is to consider the size of the atom and the delocalization of the electrons over a larger volume which leads to a better stability for the conjugate base of the acid. This idea might be a bit confusing here. Here all atoms are the same (C), and we are comparing the size of the bonding orbitals in the same type of atom (C).

How about conjugate base that are neutral without a negative charge on the atom that a H is lost. Like protonated acid that is positively charged as my textbook have questions about that but the professor just teach us about the negative charge scenario. Thank you

I know about a concept where a charge is more stable/less reactive if it's near the center of a molecule than on either end. Is this sort of how charge works regarding individual atoms, too? Will the resulting conjugate base be more stable as its negative charge lingers closer to the core of the atom? This is how I interpreted it because the nucleus has positive protons which will be able to "pull" on the extra electrons and hold them tighter to the molecule.
@Leah4sci
@Leah4sci 3 ай бұрын
That's correct! For the conjugate base, the one where the electrons are allowed to venture closest to the nucleus is the one that is most stable.

Did you say N on the right molecule itself is Sp3 hybridized but bonded to sp2 carbon, that's why it's less basic?
@etodd1234
@etodd1234 7 ай бұрын
Nah, the N on the right can use its lone pair to make a double bond with the carbon in the ring its attached to via resonance, giving it a +1 FC and sp2 hybridization (one pi bond). Due to resonance, the shifting of electrons between the lone pair on the N and the C is theoretically happening all the time, so you can essentially just consider the N on the right as sp2 hybridized

If i were asked to compare the acidic strength of benzene and methane would I bring up the fact that methane is sp3 and benzene is sp2?
@Leah4sci
@Leah4sci 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the hybridization of carbon is a major factor when determining the relative acidic strength of those two molecules. Other factors may also be taken into consideration. Review the 5 factors to help you rank acids and bases (CARIO) on my website at leah4sci.com/acidbase
