It takes a very long time to find patterns in English if one's native tongue is not English, but over time one begins to correctly guess how words in minimal pairs are to be pronounced. It is hard work, though.

Hello teacher, you're so pretty to teach it us, but I have a lot of problems getting the sound of ''leak '' and ''lick'' or ''beat'' and ''bit'', for me those have the same sound. How could I get more easy this expression?, I'm Spanish speaker so, we have only one way to say ''i'' and I didn't get this difference.

@RicardoMartinez-oh9sq7 ай бұрын
Lleva tiempo, el inglés require much paciencia.

Diphthongs should never have been called vowels. Our speech organ is only capable of making one vowel sound at a time. A diphthong is a two vowel sequence. There are dozens of diphthongs. We use 12 pure vowels sounds in American Standard English (but, bit, bought, beat, Burt, boot, bat, boat, bet, book, bulk). Yes, both /r/ and the "dark L" are monophthong pure vowels. There is one additional pure vowel that known as "Canadian Vowel Raising" or some such jack nuttery but it's a replacement for the IPA (æ) sound (as in 'cat') whenever the /æ/ is followed by an /m/ or /n/. It's an automatic accent type of thing so a letter is not required to represent this sound although the IPA should probably provide one, since they like to cover everything. When it comes to 'bait' and 'bite', there are actually two diphthongs for each. The diphthong in 'rate' is not the same as the one in 'rag' and you can hear the mismatch as your brain detects the absence of rhyme. One is IPA (e-i) and the other is IPA (æ-i). Also 'night' and 'nine' do not rhyme. The former uses IPA(ə-i) and the latter uses IPA(ɑ-i). This is why it's foolish to call diphthongs "vowels".
@7MPhonemicEnglish Жыл бұрын
I invented my own Phonetic English alphabet, which is what we should be using for common writing and would be if we had ever stopped letting the Clowns rule over us. It's called (7M Phonetic English). It provides a unique letter for every speech sound that we use in American Standard English. Ʌε inventid mʌε on Fonetik Eŋglix alfubet, wic iz wut wε xůd bε yqzεŋ for kʌmun ruεtεŋ and wůd bε if wε had evr stʌpt letεŋ ћu Klaqnz rql ovr us. It's kʌld 7M Fonetik Eŋglix. It pruvʌεds u yqnεk letr for evrε spεc saqnd ћat wε yqz in Umerikin Standrd Εŋglix.

This is why I don't allow my students watch videos like this. The difference between the vowels in "beat" and "bit" is that the first one is tense and the second is lax. English, American English that is, only has eleven vowel sounds. The other ones are diphthongs. Your lesson is very educational, but if you do not explain a non native speaker such as a native Spanish speaker that difference betwen the two high front vowels is that one is tense and the other one is lax, they will never get it. They will ehar the same thing.
@hadar.shemesh6 ай бұрын
