effective mass of an electron and its physical significance

In this video I have discussed what happens to the mass of an electron when it moves inside a periodic lattice under the influence of external electric filed. Is it same as rest mass of free electron or very different from that? Can it be negative and infinite and if so what is the physical significance of the same?
