Nowadays music is played everywhere. Many people don't know that those specific kinds of music are being played for an objective. There r certain restaurants that play an up beat tempo music which actually gets ppl n the mind frame of eating fast and getting out of the place so others can come in. The u hav retail stores that you go just keep shopping away and they will play music specifically made for this. Music is very powerful and is very much abused nowadays. I mean just look at everybody with their headphones in their own world, less social less human interaction. Just bobbing their heads away uselessly wasting precious time being selfish and no care for others.

Music is a mathematical, visceral, and psych-spiritual microcosm of the universe; as is humanity. It is extraordinarily powerful and at the same time subtle. Most are unaware of its nature and possibilities. It’s power is, in its primordial form, morally neutral. Human intention and application make it either beneficial or destructive.

I thought like that until I heard Quranic recitation, and my Being has shifted into the unviersal instrument of timeless truth and love. My soul only craves Quran. What hamzah speak of might go over some people head who are not aware of islamic taswaf or sufism.

Adopted Hippo Subhanaallah the more I listen to quran the more my whole being rejects music. I'm very sensitive to energy so I feel unpleasant energy shifts ( previously masked as pleasant) in my body. the worst feeling is the tightness in my throat. I cannot let go and get lost in music anymore. unless it connects me to nature and Allah, even spiritual music effects everyone differently, anything that triggers human desire should be avoided. Hamdulliah my soul is protecting me from getting lost in the illusion of this world.

princessofthehippies My journey to quran was rough, I was a nobody and still is, lost something and gained a book of all books, my eyes sees what lays beyond now, I see God works in everything, I see a timeless beauty. My life now is like an untold tale of great love that lays beneth it all. A heart pounding with love and grace, I can only give but not take. Quran are for those who seen it all, or want to see what lays beneath the surface of play. A play of lost souls looking for him. Abandoned distraught, its ok Allah waiting for you in the darkest room, stretching you mat to be touched by his grace and gentle love, a mercy that tops it all, now at peace and waiting to swim in the far space with the stars. Allah gives to those who wants nothing from it all. Look at my eyes? to you see eternity? am I dead in your love or still waiting for him to take his gift. Life is music and Quran brings that music to life. No need for music. Maybe occasionally to fit in, or hear good tones.

I too have heard different opinions regarding music in Islam. So far as I've examined, and by what has been said by Hamza Yusuf, music is neither bad nor good, it contains energy. The energy of the music is transferred to the body and mind when listened to and that energy has a strong effect on one's behavior and state. Negative energy will have negative effects and positive will have positive. I think classical music is positive since it lifts the spirit and strengthens the heart.

As a fan of classical music myself, I think we must remember that the classical genre is not above the same problems that Sheikh Hamza Yusuf talks about here - for instance, 'Lisztomania' was a real cultural phenomenon following the cult-like popularity of Franz Liszt during his youth, and also, while classical music is not generally 'dirty', there are some notable examples of composers employing some immoral or impure ideas e.g. Mozart's 'Leck mich im Arsch' (hopefully no need to translate!)

I remember being a Christian, I used to listen to an artist that also included the violin. The violin is absolutely the worst instrument for me because it didn’t remind me of God at all..I became depressed after listening to it and almost suicidal despite it being a Christian themed song.

I know music can lead to haram within the community of people who listen to music in how they conduct themselves but music itself could be halal or haram i believe it depends on the message of the musician(s)... I believe it setting a very specific intent and a direction of the interpretation of the composition. It's like medicine it can heal but yet it can be abused... - - - This is My Islamic philosophical (Sufi) perspective on music, I am a musician, poet, philosopher, artist and Muslim - I must express if you consider music haram completely then you must consider the internet haram as well other wise it is hypocritical...

Mohsin Raza Asalamu Alaikum my dear brother. With all due respect, I'm not sure what your talking about. The words used to describe what the angel will do to the trumpet يُنفَخُ فِي imply blowing on an instrument according to the arabic dictionary I have. There is also a well known hadith in Sahih al-bukhari which says that the prophet (saw) and his companions were trying to findout what to use in the adhan, one of the suggestions was a horn or trumpet instrument others were bells. I'm not trying to pick and choose the parts of Islam I want (as I rarely listen to Music anyway) this is my own honest interpretation, and if someone gave me fool-proof evidence that music is haram, wallahi I would obey =) Allah knows best.

If people want to believe all Music is haram than I am cool with that but as long you not a hypocrite. You can't say it is haram because it shifts you focus from Quran and Allah and yet you will go and play Video games/ Watch movies and Sports that won't remind you of Allah. At least their is a lot of Music out their which reminds you of Allah and his love, mercy and greatness. So really that most people today especially the local street Akh who loves to go and "remind" everyone on his opinion on music.

indeed music is powerful not just on the soul but on the body. therefore it is used to heal people of various illnesses. music when done well can be cathartic and therefore has saved many lives..even music which some may find offensive provides an outlet for the listener which is beneficial to society.

Well said. Music is very powerful it can be used for a lot of good and can also be used for a lot of bad stuff. The question is which side do you pick. That is the case with anything actually. For a lot of people music is something that enlightens them for a others it is something that they use for their illegal acts. At the end of the day your soul is responsible for all your actions. If you don't have you heart and mind in proper sync and control then naturally you will go astray.

(24) Safwaan Bin Umayyah (radhiyallahu anhu) narrated that Amr Bin Qurrah said (to Rasulullah - sallallahu alayhi wasallam): "I am very unfortunate. I do not see any way for acquiring my rizq except by means of my duff. Therefore, grant me permission to sing (i.e. with my duff) such songs which will be devoid of any immorality (evil).' Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) replied: "I do not give you permission. There is no honour and no goodness (in what you are saying). O enemy of Allah! You are a liar. Most certainly, Allah has ordained for you halaal rizq, but you have chosen what Allah has made haraam for you in place of what He has made halaal for you of the sustenance He has decreed for you." I saw Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan perform in 1990. It was one of the most joyous and life affirming experiences of my entire life. How can Islam have such an exquisite musical culture, so sophisticated and blissful, and yet certain commentators such as this discuss such arcane interpretations of the holy book in order to dismiss and outlaw music? Are Sufis so totally different culturally and theologically from these fundamentalists (?) that they are the only ones to see how music is a gift of "god" , one that enriches and illuminates the soul? It does not corrupt or "distract" it! Im not a muslim by the way. Just a curious bystander.

Usama Fayaaz! Bro music doesnt has any language in general. Its the genuineness of Sufi music and the way Khan sb delivered it to the masses, that attracts people from all over the world like a magnet. It doesnt matter if they understand the literal meaning or not but the essence of the sufi music has special spiritual effect on our souls.

In another video humza yusuf says that singing is permitted in islam and so is the drums and the flute. I think the reason for such interpretation is to warn people about the negative effects of a certain type of music, that can cause its listeners to go down the wrong path. The music you refer to is deeply spiritual in its nature and is often used to connect with God. As a muslim I believe that certain melodies and voices can evoke such beautiful feelings that momentarily connect us to God.

Salaam alaykum. The Quran has been sent to us as a means of lifting one's emotional state- always in a positive way. Allah refers to it as a healing a cure a reminder. Also, musical instruments HAVE BEEN outlawed in Islam, so why are you people confused? Where are you learning your Islam from? !Always go to the source- Quran; and the authentic sayings of the prophet ( peace be upon him)- What we call hadeeth. It's no 'mystery'.read Quran yourself- with intention of seeking truth. Salaam alaykum.

A Latin word and part of the epistemology of the European Renaissance, which was much more informed and shaped by Muslim thought than is generally acknowledged. Together with the Trivium (grammar, logic and rhetoric -the latter being the art of persuasion) these formed the seven liberal arts. They were distinguished from the practical arts, such as engineering, medicine etc. The sharp distinction is a European perspective not, I think, derived from the medieval Muslim outlook.

I didn't know that -thank you- though I did know about Kitab al-Musiqa and al-Farabi's advocacy of music therapy. To me, al-Fababi shines out of his time as a surprisingly modern thinker. I don't think his successor, ibn Sina, developed his philosophical thought entirely beneficially, so it is regrettable that he was much more influential on Western ideas than al-Fababi. I don't make the same criticism of ibn Sina in the physical sciences or medicine, in which he was peerless in his time..

I have heard different opinions regarding music in Islam but I am still uncertain as to what is genuine. It seems to me that there are different kinds of music. Serious reflection soon reveals that certain types of music are incompatible with Islam, such as most forms of popular music; but are Bach and Mozart, for instance, really incompatible with Islam? I find this difficult to accept. Most listeners to this music find it spiritually and emotionally elevating, as I have done myself.

calm down your sensitive hearts ... just ask yourself ... we live in time now , where music sometimes really gets a hold of people , that junk will getting stuck in the head , even some strong muslim brothers i know admit it .. so understand your kids definitely will listen to it 100% , so why not atleast let them listen to maher zain or sami yusuf ? instead of eminem or i don’t know who , just to let their “steam”out .. let them atleast praise allah through there and later they will understand .. if music really gets hard for them to hold off ... butt nooooo it is prohibited ..not allowed this and that .. my gosh when i walk through my city here , i see those muslim youngster running towards clubs . behaving like they were in a cage or something , releasing their “steam” but in social life and in public ..behaving forcefully good as muslim wich looks sick from the outside , really sad to see not acting out of their hearts but commanded like robots , but their hearts can’t handle it ... must be careful squeezing yourself , comparing yourself directly to the prophet sws... they lived in times , i swear i wouldn’t even need music if prophet lived near me ... or any other things .. just knowing he’s next to me .. but we live in other time now . alhamdulillah for the people who are really strong enough to not listen to maher zain or a song about allah swt .. alhamdulillah ... just keep it for yourself .. don’t go around boasting .. we all have our weaknesses .. just like u . go perfect yourself first in the basics of islam .. wich can take up 30 years before you open your proud mouth about rules , otherwise u look funny when u speak . there was a time i had a good close friend , unbeliever .. we had a lot of discussions together but i saw him get closer to islam ,but there was 1 thing i knew his ego would never accept and that is not listening to music .. i knew this but never mentioned it ..so i went to a sheikh for guidance whom i know for years , and explained him the situation and asked about that good brother of mine .. he said let him , let him listen , slowly let his heart get used to word of allah swt , let him enter ... don’t keep the doors to islam narrow but wide as possible for the ones who are interested .. and so i did , i remember he started to like the song from maher zain ( ya nabi salaam aleyka ) .. and subhanallah one day i heard him singing it .. before i knew it he wanted to become muslim .. and so he did .. i even see him now more in the mosque than me . and even stopped listening to those rap /modern filth music .. Take good notes from this brothers and sisters ... there is a wisdom that not everybody comprehends , there are levels to it . salaam aleikomm , love to u all

If music has the ability to corrupt minds then it also has the ability to uplift them too, depending on the composition of the track and sounds used as well as lyrics you are able to alter the output intended unfortunately the music we hear on the radio portrays the bad side of it as the moto of most songs is to live for today, but that can be changed.

Can we listen to "subliminal messages" and is it allowed in Islam. Its an audio file with affirmations (affirmations are starements like "i have a positive mind" or "I am extremely wealthy") these are hidden behind music, not like hip hop or pop songs just noises so that you cannot hear them this way the affirmations go directly to your subconscious mind to make the positive changes. Brothers are subliminal messages allowed in Islam, because i dont want to upset The Great Almighty Allaah if its not and dont worry they are for good changes like learning faster, growing taller and reading faster. Thank you!

There can be extremes in many spheres of our life. Hence Allah says "Do not go to extremes in your Deen" we are people who tread the Middle path/way. Certainly music is not haram. At the time of our beloved Prophet, Mohammed saw, Abbysinian musicians were even called over from their country to come and play music in the Masjid. Men and women both would listen to it. Our so called mullah and peer made music haram, what a nonsense. I agree, music & song must be within bounds of decency.

ashari aqeedah-they misinterpret the divine attributes of Allah. when Allah says He has a face, they say it means His power. This is wrong. Allah has a face but not like ours. we accept He has a face but we shouldn't try to imagine what it looks like. Allah is above His creation. there is nothing like Him, the Most High.

It makes you God conscious but it's also dangerous, you'll get lost if you'll listen to it too much. In Turkey, there is divinity. They only use the duff and they have this special dance in which every movement, there is a message. Qawaliis were introduced in the subcontinent because the Hindus and followers of other religions showed no interest towards Islam. Even now, you can see that Indians are a bit anti towards Islam and mosques but when it comes to shrine and Suffism, they really respect those teachers who were spreading the message of love.

Rock 'n roll and all these kinds of music you mentioned is not music. Is not pure music I mean .. like classical music is.. They are songs not music. Songs have Lyrics (words, messages e.t.c). Pure music is only sound not messages.

High Art when it gets really good breaks down legends, mythology or whatever whosoever anywho had you enchanted with.. I think religion can have you under a spell before they enlighten you. It must be. Music is not the highest of Arts but rhythms and melody break down the enchantment of religious mantras (unless they are used like tools by religions). For all purposes of conducting a sermon, unintended music is like a monkey in an antique shop. Orthodox religions don't like paintings either. Don't lose the pagan in you.

Maher Zain music is islamic , i dont know about him, but i will give my opinion on this topic in general Those who choose Quran AS company can't maintain a life listening to music, it creates a turmoil in the soul that is trying to develop beyond the fakery in this world, but if you are not close to Quran Music will not effect you that much, hence why people who hear music tend to be just normal practicing Muslims but not those who spend a life with Quran and actually follow it. Bottom line the closer you are to God the more you become tuned to hear the music of the universe, and once you taste the organic raw music of everyday life consciousness in the universe you will never want anything to disturb it, because life as you see will become very authentic and REAL and beautiful as it is and you dont need a selfie to confirm that its real. You could say it as there's two opposing forces in the world EVIL and GOOD , FAKE AND REAL, Music is fake , Quran is authentic.

One part of this doesn't make sense. "Beatlemania" had nothing to do with music per se, but the tattiness and emptiness of the cult of celebrity. You can see the same thing in India, Pakistan and throughout the sub-continent in respect of cricketers, some of whom are elevated to the status of gods by some Hindus. They generally do nothing to encourage this (idiots like Shahid Afridi perhaps excepted, but no Hindu adulation there). It is the bane of their lives for the sensible majority.

Right, because reading ONLY the Qur'an will lead you straight to Jannah. Forget about medicine, law, logic, politics, economics, etc. Let us just stick straight to the Qur'an without any knowledge of the Dunya. BTW, he doesn't have enough facial hair to grow a beard, so maybe it's you who is extremely misguided. If you actually had an atoms weight of intelligence and actually listened to the lecture, you'd know that he's condemning music.

What does he have ot say on Dhikr circles, not from the sunnah or Quran but he practices this in His school in America? there are pleanty of Hadith on hos much the Prophet SAW hated music. to the extent he would put his fingers in his ears. So It is expressed in many ways as being harram from Hadith. And this is an opinion of shiekhs and scholars on the Sunnah. Not sufi's who use music to get into a trance and dance, and "remember" Allah. As they do in morocco, His wife is from Morocco...

it would be nice if you can also setup a madrasa like Zaytuna Institute or knowledgeable as much as Hamza Yusuf, if not better, in order to propagate Islam. To judge a scholar based on turban or not... emm... That, is way too shallow. You would find other big scholars who on some of the days would not wear turban also. Don't judge too soon. Get the good sides, and leave out the bad ones. Just consider this, would the Prophet SAW agree with your assessment? Sincerely. wallaahu'alam.

Sufi is a type of Muslim like Scholar or imam or mujahid. Why do you identify yourself with a name rather then Muslim? Why do we refer to Sahaba as such and not Muslim? When one identifies himself as Sufi he is saying he loves zikr and Al Ehsan or Tasawuf. But please continue with your life of 'bidah' and 'shirk' keep the anger up :)

sigh, you don't understand what he was saying. Sh. Hamza Yusuf mentioned specifically about the boundary of music, that is no extreme prohibition and no extreme permission to music. The impact of music to soul, thus, must happen within the allowed boundary. Please try to understand the lecture first before making any judgement. Otherwise we will be creating fitna and would have wronged a person, and will have to answer about that on the Judgement Day. jzk and wallahu'alam.
