Just a slight fact check, anullment isn't just another word for divorce. Anullment means the marriage is legally declared to have never been valid/never have even begun. People back then couldn't just divorce because they wanted to, you had to prove that the marriage contract had somehow been broken or the terms of the contract were never fulfilled. Effie had to literally get examined by a doctor to get medical proof her hymen was still intact so that they would give her an anullment on the basis of non-consummation. If they had had sex even once she wouldn't have been able to get annulled or divorced. Which means the fact that Ruskin was impotent was made public as a detail of the case and it totally ruined his career and reputation. But he pretty much deserved it imo because he wrote an official statement to the court saying she was ugly. Also there is a letter he wrote to one of his friends saying he prefers his girls from 10 to 16 years old and admits that he was grooming a 12 year old girl at the time of writing the letter. Yikes.
