Your issue isn't just tied to 08 gallardos - it's the pre-lp engines in general that had the awful cats, they break down due to over-fuelling and the engine then ingests the ceramic material and scores the bores, apart from that, the engines if looked after, have no other major problems. I own an 08 SL too, luckily cats were removed and swapped for Larini sports cats very early in it's life. Also, months for a rebuild? find someone else, pretty standard, just swap out the pistons and rods for decent Carillo versions and it can be done in a couple of weeks.

Some engines were more prone to cats breaking down on the header side, the fine ceramic dust getting sucked in due to reversion/valve overlap - the damage can already be done even if the cats are then removed as debris can reside in the rings. A few Nissan engines of the same era had similar issues and really down to a combination of poor cat material, overfuelling, pop+bang maps and header design.

@@krusher74 modern engines have exhaust cleaning, the exhaust gasses are fed back into the intake i *think* that may be one of the reasons they can destroy the engine, also heard that astons of that time period had the same problem

As a gated pre LP 2006 owner I feel your pain. I almost bought an 08 that I was going to convert and was having its engine rebuilt. I waited over a year for engine out. Boring. Sleeving. Etc before I switched to the one I have now. I do think it is worth fixing tho. I run the motorpixel site and like you say one of ten in USA for white SL. Also that cake looked good. 😉

I feel ya bro. Just finished rebuilding my 01 vette z06 motor in my driveway because I got lifter tick, and also had a melted piston. It’s been a damn money pit because I push it to its limits but I will never sell it. It means a lot to me, first car/sports I ever bought at 19 cash like you. 30k and 6-8 months is a joke. Call around and see who has the best to offer, or see if you can hunt down the parts you need so they can immediately get started. I would think someone can do it for low 20s at least.

I'm really sorry for you. But keep your head up. It'll be stronger than the old one... So for the future engine take my advice: optimize the ECU software. When u brought the Lambo u said that there are no catalytic converters.... So it's possible that the ECU runs on too hot exhaust temps. Wich can cause the oil consumption, because the pistons or piston rings start to melt and scratch the bore. Sorry for my bad english but I hope you read this and it'll help sort out future damage Greetings from Germany

Hardly a "worst case scenario" the block and probably most of parts are still fine, all it needs is cylinder honing and maybe in worst case scenario new pistons but obviously they should replace all bearings, piston rings and other wear items (oil and water pump rebuild?) while at it and even measure crank just to be safe for another years of use. 6 months and $30k for a rebuild due to scored cylinders walls? It seems to me like just a edge case of exotic car tax on repairs in US. Any machining shop could do this kind of rebuild, I get it might be expensive car but at the end of the day it is just a typical engine not a rocket engine it is no different than any other car be it v6 camry or some small block v8.

True an engine rebuild doesn't cost 30k. Maximum 10k for a sports car. Also it does take 2-3 weeks but not months.

I agree, there might be an exotic tax on repairs but I've spoken with a friend who owns a high mileage Superleggera. He's torn down the car himself and his engine needs a rebuild. I asked if the 30k+ quote was accurate and he agreed it was. Parts alone are going to be 20-25k. If you have any other suggestions I'd love to hear them!

RE the Lambo, it's going to be down to the rings and if they changed the lubrication system on the 08. It's going to be worth doing, and it taking that long (it can be done much faster).. but.. when the workshop can do it, in and around other jobs that way they will actually make some money, doing engine jobs that big it's really hard to make any money as a mechanic, so better going this route. I'm sure you are aware. Can i get a Mr Sheep sent to the UK?

The stock catalytic converters on the first generation Gallardo are terrible, they eat up the engine. The solution Is to either completely remove the cats or more preferably Install Larini sports cats. Sucks that this happened, hope she gets back In good shape as soon as possible!

Always get a 2nd opinion when it comes to cars no matter if economy all the way to exotic. Alot of times, these shops do get it wrong. This would be the time to get super creative with content. Maybe partner with another KZbinr on a rebuild. TJ Hunt or Royalty exotic.... etc etc. But this would be a good car series for transparency on the potential rebuild for the superleggera. When in doubt, reach out to the banks. If you own the vehicle out right, you might be able to pull equity out of that vehicle for the rebuild and max out the months for repayment for cash flow purposes.
