I started re-gripping my own club's about 10yrs ago. I started using Midsized/ 2 wraps of tape about 7(?) yrs ago. I'm 6'2"/ can palm a basketball etc. I love my Midsized grips. Other than having to clean them around season end where I live ( no biggie ), they have held up very well for me. I believe I'm on my 2nd/3rd set of grips of the 2-3 sets I've switched back n forth with over those years. Your content is awesome Sir. Thank You!

Hi AJ, love your channel and content and I always watch each episode. I use the FLO method with the laser light and I see a big difference in the steel shafts that are not as expensive as seen on this video and a big change in the not as expensive Graphite shafts. Which include shafts from the 1990’s 2000’s. What I have experienced are the shafts made today are more tuned and equal coming out of the factory now rather than before. As you know we all can’t afford expensive shafts and for my golfer buddies and myself I test them all before installing. And we know how much a new brand name graphite shafts cost these days. It would be nice to see how the less expensive steel and graphite shafts measure up with your frequency meter or try the FLO ( Flat Line Oscillation ) method. Thank you for your time and videos! Tony
@EFGMC9 сағат бұрын
I will add that video idea to my list. My big issue with FLO, because obviously you don't have to pay for it so no issue there, but a golf shaft only bends and releases 1 time during the downswing. FLO makes everything look much more exaggerated because it is multiple cycles.

I have been using standard grips for 30 years. 1 month ago I put on midsize golf pride grips from Dicks sporting goods on my wedges(1 tape) I’d say I’m below average hand size but the new grips feel amazing. Definitely changing out the woods and irons eventually.
@andyd_914 сағат бұрын
I also went to midsize last year after decades of standard. However, I did not change my woods to midsize. I have read that with midsize on woods you are less likely to pull your hands through the club to turn it over right to left (draw for a RH golfer). I naturally fade my woods, so I did not need a thicker grip hindering my hands ability to get through the ball/swing. So I am still using standard on woods with 1 extra wrap of tape and use midsize with standard one piece of tape on irons and wedges. If you have a buddy with similar woods than yours flex/length etc with a midsize grip, hit his to make sure you still hit them the same. Now if you hit hooks...yes go bigger on your wood grips. It will help the hook straighten out some. My 2 cents, your mileage may vary and this in no way is gospel...just gospel to me. Hit em straightish!

Great video!!! The explanation of swing weight was outstanding!!! In a way I learned this on my own by experimenting with different shafts and head weights in my driver. What should have been easily a way faster combo based on the swing weight wasn't, and the lack of mass really hurt the driving distance. I don't think the players of the golden era cared too much for swing weight and they did pretty good. Ben Hogan was known to swing a wicked heavy driver like something around a pound in weight. I reckon that likely isn't going to fall into the D6 range.

Side note. Love WINN grips. I use oversize DRI-TAC LITE or LT (with single wrap of tape) depending on swingweight issues since my clubs are - 1/2 inch they are very cushioned and need them for my tendonitis in my fingers

@mariofonseca92676 сағат бұрын
Just to clarify regarding spine alignment (not that I am a fan whatsoever); the purpose of spine alignment is not to get the shaft to frequency exactly the same independent of orientation. The idea being spine alignment is to make sure that as the shaft flexes it returns to the exact same club /ball interface point cycle after cycle therefore avoiding the potentially inconsistent club / ball point location. To test this, you add a weight to the shaft tip and make the shaft oscillate back and forward by pulling on it slightly. You will see that in clubs where plane oscillation is inconsistent that the weight at the tip of the shaft with start oscillating in circles instead of oscillating in one plane only. Does that make a difference? Potentially, but I think that in an insignificant way.
@EFGMC5 сағат бұрын
This is where people get into the weeds on this. The entire reason any of that happens is because the shaft is stiffer in one plane vs another. In FLO terms it's the spine vs the NBP. If a shaft has no difference in these numbers then it won't pull in any direction. The idea that we use an oscillation method for FLO or PURE is also wrong because the shaft flexes and releases 1 cycle during the downswing, not the 50 or 100 times we look at during a FLO or PURE test.

Cool video! I thought the whole 'Pureing' argument was a directional thing, not a stiffness consistency thing. Meaning, the shaft will deflect in a certain way. Interesting.

They will frame in directional or distance terms but it's variations in stiffness in different planes that you are really measuring.

I prefer the extra tape for my bottom hand. Hate the feel of a midsize on the butt end but a standard with 1 wrap makes the bottom hand feel too small. The +4 style
@hoganfan20064 сағат бұрын
I thought that Flat Line Oscillation, or FLO, ensured the shaft deflects along the same plane to help hit the center of the club face more often. In other words, put a laser and head weight at the end of the shaft, flick it, and then rotate until the oscillation line (of the laser) is flat. So not for matching cpm along the different shaft planes, but rather to get the shaft deflecting on a flat plane. I hope that makes sense.

I learned a valuable swing about weight lesson this week. Moved from standard Lamkin Crossline to midsize MCC Golf Pride in my 101Ts and for over a week, I simply could NOT feel the club head of my irons. I didn’t consider the difference in weight when I made the switch. The Lamkins are 50g out of the box, the Golf Prides are 66g. I discovered the Wynn Midsize LT (closer to 50g) and switched to them. The lesson?….do your research or consult someone who knows things you may fail to consider.

@bobpegram80422 сағат бұрын
Wjem you turned the shaft 90 degrees you should turned the head to the same toe up position it was in on the first test to eliminate any other variables. Cheaper shafts will have more variation in CPM in different orientations. Obviously good quality shafts are better. In the build video your yelow paper showed DIFFERENT swingweights per club with as much as 1.5 swingweights difference between some of the clubs.
@loganframe595516 сағат бұрын
Is it fair to say that if the swing weight was D2 or D3 prior to adding larger heavier grips that it would be worth getting the swing weight back to D2 or D3? For example, I put corded midsize grips on my irons and the swing weight dropped to about C7. I then was able to add lead tape to get the swing back to D3 just so that I didn’t lose the same swing feel after changing grips.
@EFGMC9 сағат бұрын
I think you need to experiment with it. Won't be the same for every golfer. This situation is tricky because you are adding weight on top of added grip weight so you just need to make sure it doesn't get too heavy and that it still retains a similar feel to the other clubs in your bag. Again it's most important to test it out and see what you get.

I build clubs to MOI match. This can be down with pretty good accuracy by building with.4 in. Difference between clubs rather than .5 in. I have an Auditor MOI machine but I find it really isn’t necessary. Also, building to.4 gapping makes for clubs that set you in nearly the same posture with each club

I wondered a bit about the 6 layers of tape under the grip. For me, thinning the grip like that adds quite a bit of harshness that detracts a lot from the feel. I can see that the additional tape would help counter the swing weight changes from the longer shafts but definitely not a build that would work for me. Looks like he also did a combo set with 101t. Not really something most every day folks would do. Kinda defeats the purpose of a lower cost D2C value proposition vs buying at retail with a fitting and far greater combo possibilities. I'd rather have seen him be a bit truer to the brand and go with a stock build. Not trying to be super negative on the comment. I'd just value the brand a bit more if he would compete and win with the same stock setup choices that most Takomo customers would be selecting.

How do you cover up a raw shaft on a graphite shaft, if the adapter already comes with a ferrule
@EFGMC5 сағат бұрын
Are you talking about the prepped area where the paint has been removed. If so your only options are to use a taller ferrule if you can, add an additional ferrule or ring style ferrule on top of the adapter, or tip trim the shaft just enough so the prepped area doesn't show.

@ltoussant824711 сағат бұрын
good video overall. I don't know much about this but, with the pureing testing, I think you should mark and turn the shaft not the shaft head. You have have to remove the shaft and turn it not just turn the club head. So technically you did not test anything. Try removing the shaft keeping the club head in the same position, then you are testing the shaft IMO.
@EFGMC9 сағат бұрын
Head makes no difference. It's just a weight on the end of a stick. The weight remaining constant is the what you need to determine those shaft measurements.

Would swing weight be important when cutting down a driver shaft to improve accuracy? If I cut my driver shaft (d2 @ 45 3/4” to c8 @ 44 1/2”) would I need to match the old swing weight?
@EFGMC5 сағат бұрын
Grip down on your driver the amount you plan on cutting and try it. The SW and how the shaft responds will be almost identical to cutting it that amount. Biggest difference will be the smaller grip because of the taper when gripping down but this will give you a good feel for what it will be like and if you will want to add back some head weight.

@josephpendarvis99472 сағат бұрын
For someone as well regarded in the world of club building, you totally don’t understand what Puring, Spining, and FLOing does for a golf club. To keep it simple, let’s discuss an iron shaft which you would Spine. ALL iron shafts have a “spine” somewhere on them. Meaning that in the circumference of the shaft there is a line you could draw from the butt end to the tip where the shaft is the strongest. If that “spine” is perfectly set vertically down from the sky as you hold the club, then the club will have the least amount of sag and dip as you swing and the weight of the club head settles at contact. This results in more efficient droop and way more efficient ball striking. It tightens the variable for more precision in terms of consistency for hitting the sweet spot. Every shaft will wobble when held at one end and flicked on the other, but there is a point where that wobble becomes linear and that is what you want. Golf is a game of variables and tons of things you can’t control, so why wouldn’t you want to control as many things as you can to help you as much as possible 🤷♂️ If you want to call BS on what I’m saying, just consider the fact there is no such thing as a perfect circle. That’s why Pi has never been solved and is a never ending decimal point. There IS a spine on all golf shafts whether you want to acknowledge that or not!!!
