I'm so glad you did all this testing. I have been saying for years that it makes no sense that EFI guys kit makes more power or is any quicker. All the people that spent the money, swear it made the trucks better but this is a great example of an unbiased test.

Thanks for the test. I was going to pull the trigger on this kit but never could find any data to substantiate the claims that were made. Saved me a lot of money.

So glad I saw this video before I dumped any coin on the intake. I have a '97 F-Super Duty, it's a chassis with a 12' flatbed added to it. It has a 460ci 7.5L and it had bad exhaust manifolds when I first got it about 10 years ago. I replaced the exhaust manifolds last year and just had a chance to tow about 4000 lbs. on the flat bed. Mine has a dually rear, 11,000 lb. rear end, it cruises on the highway at 65 no issues, can go up to 70-75 when I really want to. It only has one issue, it only gets about 8 mpg when I haul. I get 10 mpg when it's empty. Yeah, I sure wish it was a 7.3L powerstroke, but I only need to use it occasionally so the cost of gas is a small issue.

Price Motorsports makes adapters to install a 4 barrel carb on the stock lower manifold.

I purchased the throttle body you mentioned over 2 years ago, after extensive testing and troubleshooting. including a new PCM, ICM, Distributor and all the fun stuff I sent it back to the company that sold it to me and they "repaired it". I confirmed that the numbers are .98-4.26 and still the truck chokes. I was told that it is fuel and or my heads, possibly the cam is toast. i replaced the cam, heads, timing. everything cost me over 10K AND STILL THE TRUCK CHOKES. I put it back to stock and cant seem to keep the re4ar end behind me. I totally agree "dont put dodge parts on youre ford. there is a reason why they did what they did. Thank you for putting this out there.

I have been looking at the EFI Guys kit, thanks for the video. You saved me a ton of money. The difference between the factory progressive linkage and the Dodge direct linkage would be a difference you could definitely tell. I wonder what hooking up the factory direct would feel like? Probably "feel" snappier too. I wonder what a 1 inch open spacer would do between the manifold and factory upper intake? On a carbureted dual plane, this would help mid range RPM big time. It would allow both sides of the manifold to share intake pulses. Shame it is not standard carb pattern. I bet a carb adapter with a Holley 4 barrel throttle body would do something useful. The biggest power increase I have found so far is dual exhaust and cutting the funnels out of the intake hose spacer. Those two things definitely woke it up. Subscribed.

I have a bad Jones for some headers on mine. Tri-Y or long tubes. Decent Y pipe and it already has 3" exhaust. That and the regulator should be helpful even on a 3.55 gear ECLB 4x4.

On that fuel filter bracket, once you get it off trim down those mounting studs and it will be a lot easier to take out next time.

I always wondered about the efi guys stuff. I have a Vortech sq, banks headers, BBK throttle body, wires and full exhaust. And I will say the BBK throttle body I feel made the most difference. I have a set of heads to send out to Boport racing to have him port along w intake and I want to stroke the engine as well

I've also heard Parkway machine out in Washington? Is doing great stuff with EFI 460s. But yeah the EFI guys stuff is garbage

Something interesting I noticed on my 1994 7.5l when I installed an AFR gauge is that the WOT AFR were not getting rich enough. You could crank the fuel pressure and it just wouldnt get to 12:1. Then I got a tweecer and started looking at my stock tune from the factory. Its set up to never register open loop. At least mine was. It was set to go into open loop at 5 volts of tps which is impossible. I changed that value to 3 and it really helped. Now when you get on it it dips down to 12 or 13:1 and feels really good. Seems to be responding well to 46psi(vaccum off) of fuel pressure as per 4wheeler mag's chart in their project mpg issue.

I am just in the process of installing a Banks Stinger kit, minus the cat, and found I might need to replace my y-pipe (collector on the y-pipe had been replaced by someone at some point and is now leaking) when I stumbled upon this video. Can you share more info about this fuel pressure increase and timing adjustment? I own a '96 F250 given to me from my Dad.

@@redrussian76 nice! The banks kits are good from what I hear. That and doug thorleys are about the best you can get for headers. If you want more info on performance and fuel economy mods, you should google "4wheeler magazine project mpg" there are tons of super detailed mods that have been dyno tested and proven. Fuel pressure regulators are an ok mod. I like mine because its a quick way to check my pressure at the rail and I can adjust it if I need to. You only really need to crank it up if you are maxing out your stock injectors. Increasing pressure at the rail makes them act bigger and richens up the mixture. Be careful messing with this though because injectors are set to operate at a specific psi. The bosch ev1s your truck has should be 39.5 psi if I am not mistaken. Some bosch's are 43psi. The stock fuel regulator should be set at about 40 which is perfect and shouldnt need to be changed. Project mpg saw an increase in fuel economy and hp when they increased to 46psi but if you bump it up you're throwing off all the tables in the computer.

@@redrussian76 sorry for the novel. On to timing. Base timing on these trucks should be 10 degrees before top dead center. Make sure the spout connector is removed when you adjust the timing. If you want to bump it up you can increase to 12 to 14 btdc and gain some hp and possibly fuel economy. Mine is set at about 12 and it runs good. Just make sure it isnt pinging. Any more questions about mods hit me up I've done literally every bolt on there is for these trucks.

I have seen people slot the tps holes to adjust it. I bought a used kit last year, haven't installed it yet. But the tps sensor was also drilled to be slotted.

You could hack the bolt holes off and it still won't be enough. You will mess it up elsewhere in the range too as it is correct at idle

Smaller that crazy less air flow in is not good lol. Definitely not a performance upgrade. Thanks for the good information.

Do you see the factory design? It is full of bends and the air filter is like 3 feet from the intake plenum. This is directly over the plenum and uses a 14" round air filter. Longer and more turbulent isn't better for incoming air.

Putting it bluntly as possible, if it ran 11 seconds 0-60 stock, and after just installing this efi kit caused the 0-60 to change to 14 seconds, plain and simple the efi was a downgrade. If you make one change and it decreases power it is a bad change no reason to mythbust and trouble shoot and do timing and etc

What yr is big red? I'm not up to speed on the EFI 460 heads as much as I know the old carb heads but isn't there a couple different EFI heads & though they have super small valves for a 460 isn't there different valve sizes between the EFI heads? I'm just wondering if big red has different heads than your dad's 96?

BIG RED is a '97. Both trucks should have F3TE heads which would be 1993 casting, the last one

I have a 1991 460 and a 1995 460. The '95 from factory is rated to have more power, but my '91 feels waaayyy quicker.

One thing that continues to baffle me about people who buys these trucks then try and turn them into racers is. These things are big heavy tow rigs. They were made for low end torque not for high rpm racing. Made are for pulling. Your whole platform is wrong from the get go. If you're thinking of building a efi 460 ask yourself. What do i want this for what do i want it to do? Things like long tubes can very likely hurt power. They make power down low so you want shorties ect. Just ask around ford fourns like Ford truck fanatics before you waste a pile of money and precious time trying to make these things do something they weren't designed for. Take the 400m for example. Boat anchor right? Nope. They are a torque monster in hiding with almost no real work. Research and ask before throwing money at miracle power makers.

I'm still running this setup and have zero issues. I'm not convinced yours is junk you didn't even perform any of the tests you said you were besides the TPS voltage at least not on camera. You didn't even change the fuel filter until after you putthe stock parts back on. I dont believe it was causing the shifting issue but you saw how dirty it was. Not a very scientific deduction as to what the issue was. You just gave up and chalk it up as junk.

Man wake up (couldn't help it 😂), it's a performance downgrade. There is no way a more restricted throttle body will improve power. It causes a restriction and takes away intake plenum volume. And their intake manifold design takes a decent dual plain and makes it a crappy single plane...ish. People want to believe to justify their time and money spent.

along with the wires and plugs you could add a fresh coil like my favorite Accel 14002 which boast 48,000 volts for turn key starts in nasty weather and great throttle response , as for the Dodge/Jeep Grand Cherokee throttle body ? I think bbk 3502 will fit the bill nicely . Volumetric efficiency is the key factor here .
