Which is right for you EFI or Carburetor
Episode 525 Autorestomod
There are many efi kits out there. And if you want us to review kits, leave a comment in the section below.
For arguments sake we will be using the Holley Sniper Holley Sniper 550-516
Holley Sniper EFI Self-Tuning Fuel Injection Systems
$1,200.00
Basic system without pump and enough fuel line to get back to the pump (more on that in a second.
Pump
If you are “mainstreaming” in your car choices (Mustang, Camaro, Chevelle) There are tanks specificly set up for EFI. The pump flows at 255 liters per hour or roughly 67 gallons per hour.
Tank specific pump (Mustang and Cougar Camaro Chevelle) runs $619.00
This is tricky. To return or not to return fuel? While Holley states that their 650 HP system does not require a return, we’ve read several post on the Holley site that says it does require a return line. Even the in tank pump shows a return line.
We’d recommend upgrading to 3/8ths inch fuel feed line and a minimum of 5/15th line for the return. We’d also go Stainless...Yes you can bend nicop, go ahead, spend Right at $2000.00 for a system then cheap out on fuel line.
NPD has stainless lines for the Mustang Camaro and Chevelle for
$100.00
Plus having to flair fittings for connecting the barbs to the fuel hose.
Or you can join the zip tie brigade and use the modern fuel hose and connectors provided in the Mater Kit to get the job done.
Weld in the bungs anywhere from a couple slices of pizza and a cold bear to a couple hundred bucks
We’ll call it $100 to be safe.
Plus $150 in miscellaneous (pizza, beer and piddly parts like filters)
All in on a Holley EFI
Right at $2,200.00
Carburetor.
Biggest issue used to be sizing your carburetor.
There are calculators for that now. Though my experience has been to go about 100 cfm over the calculators recommendation. Also, different cam and heads will effect that.
So, we’re specing a 650 cfm carb. The two most popular for street are the Edelbrock and the Holley.
Holley 0-80783C 650 CFM Classic Holley Carburetor is on backoreder as of filming so we moved over to the 670 CFM Avenger.
Cost for the Holley 670 Avenger will be around $520.00
Cost for the Edelbrock 650 1906 will be $420.00
If you are bare with no intake, you’ll spend between $200.00 and $400.00 for an intake for the car. This isn’t an intake comparison so we aren’t going to argue that. That same money can be added to the EFI
Good quality fuel pump:
$85.00
NPD has stainless lines for the Mustang Camaro and Chevelle for
$100.00
Tuning Kit will be a really good idea. $125.00-$177.93
Plus $150 in miscellaneous (pizza, beer and piddly parts like filters)
$1,000.00
Thanks for watching and please encourage others to subscribe.

Two issues that weren't addressed: replacement parts for EFI. I have heard so many people complain about the EFI computer/controller dying after 6 months or a year, trying to buy a replacement, and being told that they had to buy the entire kit to get a replacement computer. Not sure it that is still an issue, but if so!! 2nd: When an EFI system dies, you are not going anywhere, and there are lot's of potential points of failure on aftermarket EFI. I have never had a carburetor fail so badly that I could not drive the car. I love how well my car drives with EFI, but that is a factory EFI that has been long term tested by Toyota, and it's reliable as can be. On my hot rods, I prefer carbs. The benefits of lower cost, available replacement parts, and not being prone to sudden failure made that decision for me.

Not really an issue for most. Everyone I know that runs them has zero issues, the whiners on FB and the forums are likely most of their own problem.

I've installed 4 systems, 2 Holley, 2 Fitech. All have been running for years without a problem. Those people complaining need to check their grounds and improve their wiring skills. I have seen many systems with butt connectors, rust under grounds, tape wrapped around connections, no fuses, ect. I made my living working on vehicles since the early 70's and I started with injection around 20 years ago. Anyone complaining about sudden failures and running problems needs to reevaluate the installation he's having problems with. Most FI systems last the life of the vehicle, run with perfect mixture even at different altitudes, increase mileage and power and will allow or cover up problems like over camming an engine. Remember back in the day when engines lasted only around 100,000 miles if you were lucky ? That's because most of the time people didn't even know what a choke pull off was or how it worked and there are even less now. As far as replacement parts go these systems use stock GM or Ford sensors available at any parts store.

My 66 is running an Fi Tech EfI and I love it. I started with an external pump (not a fan.) then moved to the Holley in tank sending unit that was $300 and I’m running a return system. All told with NiCu lines, AN fittings, pump, and EFI (clearance find at summit) were around $1200 ($1700 not on clearance). In my opinion is very subjective. The 66 is awesome with EFI (and I’m sure I’ll convert other cars I restore) where as I would never do the conversion on our MGA or rat rod.

Good discussion that focused primarily on the "carburetor replacement" type EFI setups. These setups definitely have their place (I'm trying to convince my brother to put one on his Continental) and are an easy way to get many of the benefits of EFI without needing to really tune it. But the real advantage of EFI is when you get into the proper full standalone systems like Haltech, Electromotive, or if you are more DIY, MegaSquirt. The learning curve is much steeper and the cost to implement can be much higher however the benefits are well worth it. Multipoint sequential injection, boost control, auxiliary device control, high resolution tables, plenty of corrections and engine protection. The ability to control every aspect of the engine. In a way, these carburetor replacement type systems are akin to TBI with a fancier controller. A good stop gap with some real improvements and advantages that will always fall short of a more modern system.

Biggest advise I have in an EFI conv, buy EVERYTHING from 1 company. Tell them what you have, and buy it all from that 1 company. Saves the hassle of getting parts that DO NOT match up, and if it doesn't match up, it's only 1 company you have to deal with to make it all right. Other then that, I'm a Carb Guy. I put manual choke carburetors on everything unless it has a "power adder". Then I let the computer do all the "on the fly" tricky stuff. I'm backwards in that. I like carbs on my daily, and EFI (ecu's) on a Wild Ride.

Planning to put a Holley Sniper Autolite 1100 on my Mustang if it ever gets here. Decided to go this route for a couple of reasons. The first was looking to the future. When I am gone and the car goes to a family member, none of them are really car people. So they will need to take it to a mechanic. As yall mentioned, most current mechanics don't know what a carb is let alone how to work on one. So it will make it easier for them in the future. The second is the other thing you mentioned. It is just easier to tune. I like the easy button. I am replacing the carb and distributor for a complete system. The real downside for anyone at this time is just getting the parts for an EFI conversion. Mine has been on back order since March.

The cost was only about $1300 for me to run a sniper, but I started with a return Sniper, sourced a GM baffled fuel tank from a newer model of my truck and an AC Delco Fuel pump and sending unit. That setup ended up costing about half what Holley charged me. Had to separately source filters and lines. The 10 micron filters cost a fortune but there is a GM canister filter you can use if you cut the barbs and use AN6 compression fittings. This was for a square body truck, so I have good parts selection.

I’m running FITech and an older FASTEFI. I like them. I don’t recommend external pumps, but FITech makes a nice submerged pump you can put in the engine bay that feeds off your stock low pressure pump. Works great. Re-parts: Most parts you need are fuel pump, filter, injectors (which are usually off the shelf and easy to find at a parts store) and the ECU. If you have a bad ECU after warranty, there’s probably a better model on the market anyways, so buying a new kit isn’t a bad idea. There’s also port-injection kits that aren’t all-in-one that are effectively just an ECU.

I upgraded to a Holley Sniper on my 72 Mach 1, and some things I have learnt. You need to make sure everything is in really good shape to start. A carb doesnt care about an exhaust leak, the EFI does. While you can do a lot on the handheld, you are definately going to want a laptop if your planning on tuning it yourself. And while I didnt have any problems, you need to really pay care when routing wires, and make sure you follow the wiring instructions to a t. And the self learning is a little bit of a misnomer, it tweaks it, but you need to get things in the ballpark. And timing doesnt learn. I relate it to a carb, the EFI basically learns the jet size. The rest, you will have to tweak yourself.

I've woorked on cars my whole life, but the only carborated cars I had was when I was a kid and dad tuned the carborators. I've almost exclussivly owned EFI cars and my motorcycles had carbs but they just worked. I didn't learn carborators until late in my 40s, when I got a classic Ford. I won't lie a couple of little issues almost made me put EFI on my old Flathead. Finally got it dialed in and it starts amd runs good. Mountain driving is another tick for the EFI systems. A car with only a 100hp can't afford to lose much when you start climbing 4-5000 ft.

Long story short I've been installing or helping people install these systems for years now, mostly Fitech but I did do 2 Holley units. I use hard line and flair, sometimes I use the Little Gem fittings that have compression fittings with AN on the other side. Flexible line is used for vibration isolation only. I have started converting standard in tank pickups to submerged pump systems, not to difficult with simple fab skills. I run a lot of grounds and seperate circuits with anti-ox compound on everything and use weather-pack connectors everywhere else. No scotch locks or tape, just solder and shrink tube. There are oxygen sensor bungs that use exhaust band clamps if you don't have access to a welder, works MUCH better than a horseshoe clamp. Done properly FI systems improve power and mileage, are more reliable and increase engine life most times doubling it. Remember when a cars engine was worn out at 100,000 miles ? You could thank carbs for that and people nowadays understand even less about them or their proper maintenance and there's not a carb out there that will compensate and adjust it's mixture as you drive as you travel from the seashore up into the mountains and back.

Theres just something about carburetors that i like more…Its old school and they are extremely reliable and easy to fix..If you run a edelbrock carburetor the chances of part replacement is much easier to get at your local store. With a EFI if the electric module goes out chances are you can’t get that part right away. You also have to worry about your O2 sensor going out. You have to make sure electrical components dont get EMF which can throw your EFI system run funny or not run at all. However I believe they are great systems once dialed in as long as those things I mentioned above dont go wrong. I may try it some day. But my AVS2 is running great so far

When I was a tech I had to deal with computer controlled carbs and other oddities of those years and I don't have the pertinence to adjust them anymore. I now much prefer FI where it can cope with weather and altitude changes and has somewhat of a self adjusting mode to it's software which is getting way better these days. I don't miss carbs or points or even distributors for that matter. In those days to do an EFI swap it was a matter of pulling a harness and throttle body from a GM vehicle then burning a chip and hope you got close then keep fine tuning it from there. The new ECMs make it far easier.

Happy with my sniper first gen installed in 2017 on a 351c 4v. Pricy yes, but so much better than any of my previous carbs. I can now also stay in my garage during cold starts without dying for instance! oh and yeah, no more cold starts pumping circus! It simply idles bits higher on its own. Hot starts that were driving me nuts on my cleveland: boom, gone, not even 1/4 turn starter and there she goes! Smooth and responsive at all rpms. Install is NOT done in a weekend as they say on classic cars, at least if you want it safe, clean and well installed, all electrics nicely routed and protected. Brackets needs be fabricated etc.. count a few weekends. A welded bung is a must. The thingy they provide is a good bracelet for your gf. On 71-73 mustangs, prolly torinos and many other fords of that era too, you can replace the top vent hole by a sending unit, it's the exact same hole and use that as a return. There is enough space on the plate for a second vent tube too, it's like redoing the 71 429 sending units for Rochesters with return lines, but placed on top. I run the kit pump and it makes zero noise if properly fitted and insulated, steady pressure too. So no need for an expensive new fuel tank and extra pump really. One of the most returning remarks i read about people returning to carbs after their failed installs is that the system is not forgiven as a carb could be: it will not hide or mask anything about the engine condition, the exhaust, the wiring or pardon bad install. It's either it works perfectly or something is wrong and it runs bad or not at all. One thing is certain for me, on both my mustangs: no more carb! Best investment I ever made in 30+ years mustang.

I'm 40 years old, and owned a carburated car for over 20 years. I read the books, watched the videos, bought the tuning kit, read the spark plugs, asked the older generation, and i've come to the conclusion that it is always a compromise. The carburetor cannot adjust for air density, temperature, and it has no feedback other than me feeling something wrong. My family is also over the gas smell that I cannot seem to get rid of no matter how lean I tune it. I'm switching over to a Sniper system this winter. I got the factory refurb unit for $800, and the in-tank pump for $400. I should have another $200 in miscellaneous items to finish it up. I'm ready to hit the key and not have to do the "Biff Tannen" dance with the pedal to fire it up depending on if it is hot or cold, and how long it has heat soaked.

Great video, but a little weak on the description of a retrofit EFI. The EFI system need clean noise free power I upgraded to a 3G internally regulated 180 Amp Alt. There can be no vacuum leaks after the EFI unit and absolutely no exhaust leaks upstream of the O2 sensor. You really need to know how to run clan wiring. It helps if you understand that the spark traveling through a plug wire, coil or distributor creates a magnetic field, that in turn can INDUCE an electrical current in signal wires that go to the sniper. Rust and gunk commonly found in old tanks and lines will plug up the fine fuel filters needed for EFI. Heat is bad for electronics - coated headers reduce engine bay temps significantly. Edelbrock makes a 1\4" thermally insulated gasket spacer (9265) - keeps a lot of heat out of the TBI unit itself. Return lines are ideal - helps keep fuel cooler and should eliminate vapor lock issues. I used the HyperSpark ignition with my install and ran new 3/8 copper/nickel alloy feed and return lines, AN fittings, filters and check valve, Tanks Ink 22-gallon tank, Pump and Sender, and the Base Sniper - $3300 before tax on at todays prices. That does not include the 3G upgrade. Another $350 for a professional tune, $500 for professional Tubing straightener and flaring tools from Eastwood. As far as miscellaneous crap - probably a few hundred in quality copper wire, nylon weave split sheathing, ... Its a journey, but fun!

I live in CA and have been having issues with the gas eating up power valves and gaskets as well and the fuel evaporates over a few days in the bowls causing hard starts and there is the vaporlock issues that a phenolic spacer helps with. If I go to fuel injection I have been looking at the Edelbrock pro flow 4 and using their fuel sump as there is no EFI tank for my car and it does need a vent return line to the tank / filler neck. Is the rest of the country dealing with ethanol / oxygenated fuels issues?

Carbs are in the same boat as EFI when. Roke down on the side of the road. You cant go to a auto parts store and get a carb kit, they have to either go to warehouse and get it or order it. Then if dealing with aftermarket holley or edelbrock carb your local parts store for sure wouldnt have it on stock. I have seen this the last few years theough work having to get local part houses to order carb kits for us to re build a carb. For me I'm plumbing a s ioer stealth 4150 on my new 302 build not cause I can't t tune a carb but because I want t to squeeze as much economy and performance I can for my truck. I have a SBC ZZ5 motor... MSD Atomic, Fitech, and then sniper. Nothing could get this car to run right in closed loop cold start mode. The car would stall and fall on its face I would have to sit and baby the gas till it got up to temp and then could drive it around. 1 of the manufacturers gave up and sent me a whole new kit past warranty which I sold to convert to a carburetor. Went with an Edelbrock AVS2 and I have the damn thing dialed in better than the EFI. Not saying EFI is bad, just a shame it didnt work or was as easy for me as they make it on TV. For the record, I'm a "young" person - going to the Edlebrock was the first time I put my hands on a carb so I was doing EFI out of the gate with my car. Wish I or the manufacturers could solve the problem, but after 5 years of fighting and trying I just wanted to drive and enjoy the car

Older carb engines in a vehicle that you don’t drive every day ( dump runner pickup ) ? Use non ethanol fuel and an edelbrock set up. One good back fire with a Holley? Yep, you’ve blown the power valve on that Holley. So you’re pulling off the carb to replace the PV and you should do a oil change regardless of mileage on the oil because the oil is now fuel contaminated. Don’t forget too add in the zinc additives to oil. JMO.

Update you description... 5/15th return line? Thank you for comparing NEW to NEW. Many may mention a swap meet carb to save $. Calculators for carb sizing are OK and get you into a streetable carb most of the time. As you mention in the description, other components really impact a good sizing. What you fail to mention is the value/$ of properly running a carb and resetting. Go to the track and max power is a rejet. Take a trip to the mountains/beach, and you won't be "optimal". (Example summer in Vegas to San Diego or Phoenix to Flagstaff). Most people don't want to mess with jetting and returning (carbs lose their tune) when EFI does it for you. At today's gasoline prices, you could likely get a fast ROI going EFI.
