This is Part 1 of the SPECTRWM Window Manager installation on Arch Linux. We are going to install the packages and configure the basic settings and starting the WM. In the next video we'll customize the WM further by working on the status bar, the config file and installing a new lock screen.

Just a little fyi, & is ampersand. When you get around to Arco you'll notice (or have already) they have a Spectrwm ISO with Polybar on top of and hiding the Spectrwm bar, an interesting workaround but not so much when transparency is part of standard theming. :)

Great video as always. I really like Spectrwm, but I don't like its status bar. I wanted to use Polybar but I couldn't make Polybar work as it does on BSPWM. I'm interested to see what you're gonna do with the status bar though, maybe I'll give Spectrwm another try later on.

It's a very minimalistic status bar. It's going to have more functionality in the next tutorial, but if you want to have more flexible bar, polybar is the way to go :)

Hey Ermanno -- It seems that you pronounce 'spectrwm' with a "dry r" (as is used in the French language). Is that what you're actually doing? If so, I guess you speak French as an alternate language? How many languages do you speak? Thanks!

Hey Ermanno, awesome job on this as usual! 💥 Just one question: is there any chance to get a proper installation of hdpi fonts and icons? I'm on a macbook air M1 with UTM hypervisor (aarch64)... I don't want to install Gnome or other DE (I know for sure it works on Gnome, I have another VM like that). Bonus question: how can I switch from Super Mod Key (in my case Command on Mac) to Option key? I need that because when i press CMD+Q it closes my hypervisor lol 🤣 Thanks from Italy! 😍

I'm getting this error when I shutdown my pc Failed to unmount /oldroot/dev: Device or resource busy I'm running pop os 20.04

When it happens on Arch, one way (even it's not elegant) is to add the "shutdown" hook to the mkinitcpio.conf file and regenerate the image. I can't say if that works on pop os though.

Great video! I've been using spectrwm for a while now and I really like it. The only issue I have is that I cannot share individual apps via zoom meetings (I'm forced to use it for work) and I haven't been able to find a work around. Any suggestion?

The only progress I've been able to make so far is that I discovered it works better with i3. I'm limited to share the apps running within the same workspace where zoom is running, but I can select individual applications.
