This was the match of the week at Derby this year and fans were lined up to watch. The field of 429 players was down to just five. Between these two players, they have won nineteen Derby City Classic titles.
“The Lion” Alex Pagulayan is one of the greatest Filipino players in the history of the game. He is a two time Derby City Classic One Pocket Champion, and a two time Derby City All Around Champion. He is a former US Open 9-Ball Champion and World 9-Ball Champion, and is a member of the BCA Hall of Fame.
“The Magician” Efren Reyes is widely accepted as the Greatest Of All Time. He is a six time Derby City Classic One Pocket Champion, and a five time Derby City All Around Champion. He is a former US Open 9-Ball, World 8-Ball and World 9-Ball Champion, and he is also a member of the BCA Hall of Fame.
With five players left, Reyes had a re-buy, while Pagulayan did not. This was one race to three, alternating breaks.

if you ever seen Efren Reyes in the Philippines he is the most humble, real Filipino you will ever see. flip flops and disheveled, greasy fingers from eating buffalo wings while with his buddies.. Yet can you believe with all the billiard professionals here, there is NO Filipino pool museum.. Ive lived here for 5 years now.. seen them all at local pool halls.. or grocery shopping.. love it..

Wow what a game. To me it's like watching a 500 mile NASCAR race. Starts out fine, goes on for a long time, all of a sudden there's a big one and then it's over. I think the players were getting a little tired and missed a few shots they would have made otherwise. I've never seen a one pocket match before. It might be a while before I do again.

One pocket is absolutely fascinating. It's not something we ever hear of in the UK. Also, just wanted to say that I'm absolutely loving the DCC. It's a real shame that the Mosconi (when it's over in the UK anyway), seems to be going for the raucous Darts vibe, it's quite embarassing. For me, the DCC feels like pure pool, and the respect the audience and the players give the game and their opponents is much more akin to the snooker I grew up watching and playing.

He felt if he dead rolled it that his chances to make it would decrease to an unacceptable percentage in his mind, and if he *shot* it, with more of a stroke, that he was a favorite to make it probably 9/10 in his mind. So in other words, he is going for the win. Taking control of the shot instead of relinquishing it to the mercy of the table by dead rolling it. Most of the time with these great players, when they have a chance to win, they take it b/c they know how good they execute.

1p is an acquired taste, but it combines straight pool and 9 ball ( in terms of position play ) and even some carom billiards all in one game. Once you get a feel for how and why players make the shots they do, it becomes more exciting to watch. Search for Shannon Daulton v. Brandon Shuff Hotseat Match for a somewhat faster pace game with less defensive play.
