Yes, they're placed on the exact same spot so that they all explode at the same time, leaving no room to suddenly stop walking into the rest of the mines if you have good reaction speed. As the models overlap they look like one mine. You can accomplish this by selecting a preplaced mine and techies in one control group and using your place mine skill on the control group icon for the preplaced mine.
