I actually wish more classical concerts had this kind of format where the performer speaks to the audience before performing the piece. It's very engaging and personal.

They can only play. Many of them lack the intelect to speak to large groups of people or people other than there friends. They can play great. But cant hold a good conversation with strangers. Thats something that comes from within.

Marc Andre Hamelin is (alongside Horowitz) my hero and inspiration. Few pianists have combined virtuosity and musical understanding/insight/feeling to such beautiful effect.

Hamelin's speech and gentle sense of humor remind me of his countryman, Gould. Both were brilliant although in different areas of the musical repertoire.

This type of commentary and subsequent performance reminds of Gould's old programs.

"En Avril, à Paris" is a really beautiful and skillful piece!
@joefalchetto9412 жыл бұрын
The first is "April in Paris" by Trenet (as played by Weissenberg), the second is Hamelin's etude after Tchaikovsky n°7 "Lullaby" and the last one is "Feux d'artefice" by Debussy.

Heard a few pieces Hamelin plays in the realm of modern vs. classical and with his background it suits him so well and the rendering is just magical! A big fan of him!

I'm not sure about Kissin, but how the hell is Hamelin 'showing off his capabilities'? I've got to say, Hamelin is the most modest and humble artist alive that I know of. Just take what he says in his introductions during this video, I think it speaks for itself.

Thanks for posting this. Love his take on most things. Technique is jaw dropping. His Liszt is fantastic. Hope he does a complete recording of all three years of Pilgrimage. And may he take on all of the Debussy piano repertoire especially all of the Preludes and the Etudes.

that lighting dude. my own shadow constantly moving over the keyboard and blocking my view as I play would be terrifying. But I guess that doesn't bother Hamelin too much lol

He is certainly the only one able to play my extreme complex tour-de-force compositions like my Etude de Bravoure No. 22 "Hadar" and the No.19 "Izar" or my Impromptu No.18 "Essense". Marc-André Hamelin is a pure,noblest genius.In evolution. Yan Ayrton, XXI century avant-gard composer.

A pity is the bad sound quality. Obviously recorded with the mic he was speaking into, this is a major negligence from the recording engineering. It's a major neglect, as this man is a true piano and composer genius, of the size of a Franz Liszt, not a minor one. I do not understand why nobody cared to give him a decent recording here.

Only problem with watching these great performances on yt etc it makes one feel jealous. For the average person no matter how we practice it's rubbish especially if later in life on a crap instrument and useless teacher I enjoy the music but always vicariously imagine I'm playing it ! I bet everyone else does as well It takes far too much dedication practice talent time conditions etc to become like him the average joe has no chance

I hope he told the guy to swap the Yamaha for a Hamburg Steinway. Althought the microphones were obviously badly placed I'm still surprised by how many excellent pianists play Yamaha. Maybe it's just the action - it can't be for sound surely?

Stop kidding bro.. Kissin has one of the finest techniques.. However he's not into showing off his capabilities but the amount of ease he plays the most difficult passages in Liszt, Rachmaninoff etc with is proof enough.. And his sense of tempo is the best I've seen.. Not to disparage Hamelin, I'm making just a parallel point..
@pianoaround10 жыл бұрын
I love the piano too! You might like what I do. I've been traveling around the world with my Piano....Check it out!

I'm already quite a healthy man, so I can afford to get serious at nonsense utterances.. Point is, you can't even joke about Kissin.. It's like joking about Rachmaninoff or Hofmann.. He's so great..
@amirmotahari61868 жыл бұрын
Kissin is good but not the best out there, there is absolutely nothing special in his playing, he is nowhere compared to Gould, Sokolov, Brendel, Richter, Horowitz, Arrau, Michelangeli, Gilels, Schiff. I recently heard the Beethoven op 111 by him, one of the most boring interpretations ever! dont get bugged down by how easy eh plays a passage, I dont care, one can play with their nose as long as he moves nad touches the heart of the audience.
@18SchabergRafe3 жыл бұрын
