I just don't get it when folks say you just can't cook eggs in cast iron without makin' a mess! Well, you sure can if you use enough grease and make sure the temperature isn't too hot. Great job, nice video. I enjoyed watching you cook in that new skillet!

Eggs seem like the easiest thing to cook! Our favorite go to breakfast is the famous Egg McMuffin with a fried egg, melted cheese, and grilled ham and it is super easy to do. I have 2 small #2 size skillets and it works like a charm! Anyway, thanks for stopping by! I appreciate your kind commentary as well.

Seems like this is Lodge's answer to Stargazer, Field, and Finex. About 30 dollars less than Stargazer. Might be picking one of these up soon.
@ladylibertystacker20144 жыл бұрын
This skillet from Lodge is perfect for breakfast fair like omelettes and stir fry dishes which are best cooked in a chef's skillet. I picked this one up because I couldn't find a Wagner chef's skillet out in the wild to restore. I hear bad things about Stargazer (not holding seasoning because surface is too smooth) to Finex having lead in their metal mix. The first comment came from a viewer that has a Stargazer, but the other one I got from a blog so who knows. If you can get the Blacklock 96 on sale, you can't go wrong. Williams Sonoma carries them as well and they run sales. One caveat is that if you order from them, you will get hit with masses of email. If you do, unsubscribe, but you will have to remember to check their site periodically for deals.

Can't wait to get mine. Haven't seen anyone using the silicone handle gloves. I wonder if Lodge is making new ones for this line. When I bought my Lodge 6.5 skillets from Amazon, I bought Amazon's brand gloves because reviews said Lodge's didn't fit well. But they didn't fit well. However, they fit my Lodge logic square skillet great. I still want gloves for my Blacklock because I bake a lot in my skillets. I also season new skillets at least once before using. I'll buy some Lodge handle gloves just in case. I find the handles are easier to grab out of the oven when covered but also use a potholder. I never get tired of watching food being cooked in cast iron. I made a frittata in my square skillet today. One corner stuck a wee bit, cleaned easily. Making cornbread in it next. What else are you most interested in cooking in your new Blacklock?
@ladylibertystacker20145 жыл бұрын
I grilled a port chop for my dinner along with broccoli greens in the juices and it was yummy! I think I will use it primarily for omelettes, panini's, stir fries and the like. In other words, foods that need the lower sloped walls to slide out easily on a plate. The handle had grown very hot while making dinner, so I used an old cloth handle cover I bought for my traditional cast iron a few years ago and it worked great. These were home made along the lines of a traditional hot pad and I need to find some more. I had purchased them from eBay, one red and one black striped cotton. Thanks for watching and chiming in!

Lodge has a great silicone pot holder, has a slit caddy cornered so that you can place your trump in it on one side then the rest of your fingers go into the other side. They work great love them.

I mentioned in one of your other videos I got my Lodge Blacklock skillet and love that the handle doesn't get too hot with induction. I've made a frittata, cornbread, pound cake, etc., with no sticking so far. Also made corn pudding couple days ago, I thought it would stick, but it didn't. I think tomorrow I will make a Dutch baby pancake. Already hungry thinking about that sliding out of the skillet. I love all my Lodge skillets, but the handle and lighter weight of the Blacklock is making it a new favorite. Now I want another. I am thinking the small 7 inch would make great skillet cookies and scones. Crispy bottoms and edges while chewy middle is why I am addicted to cast iron skillet cookies.

That is very good to know and also good to know that it works great on induction. Someone had raised that point with the raised lettering on the bottom of the skillet.

The omelette wasn't too bad (no black carbon stuff on it I forgot to mention in the video)! But yes, that pan is super light compared to their other offerings! I have some arthritis in my right hand (I'm right handed too- wouldn't you know lol) so this skillet is perfect for cooking things like stir fries and omelettes. I am glad I saw those other videos on this series!

What does a "chef's skillet" mean? Thanks
@ladylibertystacker20145 жыл бұрын
It's basically the type of skillet that a chef would use in a restaurant to cook things like an omelette with sloped side walls as opposed to slightly higher straighter walls. This type of skillet makes it much easier to slide food out like an omelette and as seen in this video.

Are these skillets only available through Lodge, or can they be found in Walmarts or Bass Pro shops, etc.
@ladylibertystacker20144 жыл бұрын
They are also available at Williams-Sonoma, but I haven't seen them anywhere else like Walmart as they are the higher end of the Lodge brand. Sometimes you can get a better price at www.william-sonoma.com as they run sales from time to time. I love this particular skillet. The seasoning was a bit sloppy but that is nothing that time using it won't fix.

Actually, I use cooking oil spray with non propellants that are non-stick and healthier than oil or butter. If it tastes good and is non-stick, what's the harm?

question? I though you should never use spray oils? Was this a special spray?
@ladylibertystacker20144 жыл бұрын
For ordinary cooking you can most definitely use healthy cooking sprays . This one I’ve been using lately is a non GMO Canola oil cooking spray. Works great. I still use Crisco for my maintenance and mini re-seasoning efforts.

You’re better off with the Lodge over a lot of your vintage cast,,, that vintage stuff is great I have some from my great grandmother,,, The thing is Lodge constantly checks it’s metal as its melting it down to check for trace elements and makes adjustments to make sure everything is optimally safe,,,, they really couldn’t do that back in the day they did not have the technology,,,Lodge is very serious about it,,,,you’re getting some of the best cast-iron $$$ can buy when you purchase a Lodge cast-iron anything that’s American made,,, that probably can’t be said for their foreign stuff and they do have some Chinese Porcelain type things I myself personally would stay away from.
@ladylibertystacker20144 жыл бұрын
That’s very interesting. Do you have any links to back up what you’re saying? Thanks.

The bottom does not look flat with all logos. Can i use it on my induction?
@ladylibertystacker20145 жыл бұрын
Because the whole skillet is cast iron and many parts of the skillet make contact with the stove top which is required for an induction stove top, I would assume it does. You might want to reach out to Lodge before purchasing just to make sure. My next range will be induction/convection so I hope that is the correct answer! If you do, please post your answer here to help other viewers - thanks!

Yes you can. I use all my Lodge cast iron on induction cooktops without problems with the logo. This includes my new Blacklock, which I love that the handle doesn't get too hot with induction.

I don’t understand cast iron, you can’t really wash it? How does onion flavor then not transfer to pancakes ? Help me understand. 😫
@ladylibertystacker20143 жыл бұрын
That's pretty easy. If the pan is well seasoned (if you are starting one out new, don't cook with strong foods like onions until it has some seasoning built up in it), then you can give it a little soap like blue Dawn dish detergent in the pan and your seasoning will hold up just fine. Give is a quick rinse, dry off with paper towel, then do a mini seasoning on your stove top. You are coating the otherwise clean pan with more seasoning so you are all ready to go the next time you use the pan! A quick tip about soap. Today's soaps have no lye in them. Soaps back in the day like a hundred years ago had lye in them, so they of course would strip the seasoning right off your pan. Today, a little dish soap does no harm!

Thanks for checking it out CIC! I couldn't make another omelette like that even if I tried! It just kind of slid out that way. It’s not going to stick with all the oil and butter you put on there. Blacklock is triple coat seasoned so it doesn’t need to have a seasoning built up on it like regular cast iron.
@ladylibertystacker20145 жыл бұрын
Yes, I realize that. Since this was the first time using it live for my viewers, I added butter as an extra precaution. Non stick from the get go hasn't been my experience with the traditional Lodge products (they had seasoning as well, but probably not triple coat) so I just wanted to make sure. I basically treat this pan like all of my others and I always coat my restored skillets with at least three coats of seasoning before I use them. I usually do not use butter, only a quick spray from my oil cooking spray and my pans cook just fine. Thanks for watching.

I cook with it all the time on my vast collection of cast iron and if the pans are properly warmed up and the restoration process done correctly, they will perform just fine. Cast iron industry standards state that you can cook with and season with oils such as Canola oil and sprays which you see here. They even say one can use Pam cooking spray. Butter, olive oil, canola oil, it’s a personal preference as to what one uses. That said, it is not my favorite pan, but it does all right. Thanks for watching.
