Egg Scale Restoration - Uncovering The Secrets Of An Antique Prototype!

In this restoration video, you will see me restoring an antique egg scale. The egg scale looks like an epoch prototype because, on the dial, it is written that it was produced in Krakow and that the weight wasn't verified/legalized.
The beautiful antique kitchen tool is made of galvanized sheets with beautiful brass parts. I tried to keep an antique look and preserve the marks of time that are working to prove its age/authenticity. I removed only the prominent sharp marks that resulted from an earlier repair. Such scales can be found in a meager number, or sometimes unique. So, they need to be preserved. The dial was in pretty good shape, so I've only washed it with a soft brush. This part can be considered as the ID/authenticity certificate of the scale.
The restoration process took me almost a week due to too many pieces to restore/repair. I used only food-graded paint.
Making a new egg-shaped stand was fun, and dealing with so many holes in the water tank was quite a challenge, as you probably saw already.

Помню, пришлось мне ремонтировать алюминиевую ёмкость, для реактивов. Она была вся в дырках, как швейцарский сыр. Паяльник мне не помог, от слова совсем. Пришлось тщательно зачистить поверхность, залепить дырки с обратной стороны, чтобы туда не попал припой, взять специальный флюс, пруток, которым паяют трубки у холодильников и газовую горелку. Естественно, нужно было соблюдать осторожность. Получилось очень хорошо.

I'd be willing to bet the metal itself on the tank is actually tin with lead in it. That era many products including canned foods were made with leaded tin. It's why you couldn't eat food that had been in the can to long.

Yes, I'm not sandblasting the paint. First, I have to remove it, and then it is ok to sandblast.

One would use paint stripper, gloves and a mask/respirator instead of sanding or sand blasting so it does not become dust and breathed in. Lead is very dangerous to breathe in, also dangerous if it enters a cut or wound and gets in one's bloodstream.

Do you not need to test the dial head for lead 12:48 ??? Like you did with the base. Or not because the dial head did not have any paint on it??

I test for lead only if I have to remove the paint because I need to know if I can sandblast it directly or not.

Lead is awful for health if it is inhaled or touched with a small wound on your hands/fingers. I'm making the test to know if I can sandblast it (if I do this and the paint has lead, I risk contaminating the blasting cabinet or even the all the work place if there is a leak).

Farmers or Co-ops who sell fresh eggs from their chickens would use this tool. The scales used today are electronic; however the use of a scale was brought about by consumer demand for "large" eggs. 🙂

nice job but if you are going to call it a restoration you nee to put it back to as original as possible you changed the color so it is a resto mode not a restoration. and you did not put the nickel finish on it either

i assume mostly to avoid sandblasting leaded paint thus creating a breathing hazard if he ever has to remove the blasting compound or his cabinet has a leak or whatever
