Fascinating to watch. I’m just curious though, what is that silvery coloured paste you used to fill the holes in the metal, and what’s that glue-like substance you brushed on prior to soldering?

Hi there! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for watching! The silvery-coloured paste is a hybrid metal filler (similar to the famous JB weld). The substance that I applied prior to soldering it is called flux, mine is a universal one so can be used with different metals and soldering wire compositions.

Yeah, that primer is good ol' red lead. Hope you were wearing a mask when sand blasting. Throw your grit away and decon your cabinet, change your filters and despose of it all as toxic lead waste. Had to do this in our high school metal shop in the 80s.

As an apprentice I worked at NCR on the North Circular Road in London. The building was full of cash registers being converted during decimalisation in 1970 and 1971

Absolutely beautiful restoration. I remember seeing similar cash registers still in use in a few places back in the 80s when I lived in Germany. This was a rather complex job and I wondered what it would take to pull it off, but it turned out amazing.

What kind of solder are you using on the gas burner, surely there's a risk of that melting?

Да понятно почему их перестали выпускать, постоянная вонь от керосина, да ещё и еда которая впитывает запахи. Сомнительное удовольствие.

I was curious as to how much your equipment cost roughly. Would like to get into something like this as a hobby. Just not sure where to start. Keep up the awesome and cool content.

I lost count, to be honest. It has been bought over the years and takes time to build up a fully equipped workshop. I still need many things. Start slowly 🐌 Take a video with an item that you can find and buy it to restore it and see what that guy is using. Look for alternatives in case you can't afford or you don't have the right space to do it at this point. Wish you luck!

The handle is way too small. It should be wider to be almost shoulder width. Also looks like the blade needs to be sharpened.

When I was a little boy we had one like this, I think it was British made, it was very heavy, because it was all made of thick metal, I think modern machines work more smoothly, grass would get stuck in the wheels, it needed constant oiling and sharpening of the knives, which no one knew how to sharpen, and the container for the cut grass seemed to be missing, also metal

If you want to know why people stopped using these, just try using one to cut the grass during a wet summer. July and August heat and high humidity will kill you as you try to force these to cut a yard of any size at all. I used to cut my grandfather's very small yard in town and I finally gave up and his sons bought a gasoline powered mower. Years later, I was working under an old, old house and one of these was pushed far into the crawl space. I made the mistake of trying to pull it out of the way by pulling on the blade. As soon as the wheels moved the blade spun and cut two of my fingers badly. Safe to say, I have no fond memories of these contraptions. A good analogy might be why we quit digging our gardens with a spade and started using roto-tillers. One spends far less time and effort.

On your wood lathe lower your tool rest and always engage below the center of the wood with a upward tilt on your tool. It'll cut better and be more comfy for you.

Reel mowers are far better for lawns than rotary blade mowers, the clip the grass much like scissors, whereas rotary mowers chop the blades of grass. I imagine they fell out of favor because rotary mowers are overall more convenient.

It can be older and just registered in 1952. I believe the same, but the single proven year is on the documents under the drawer and that's '52.
