As an American, I was a bit surprised that “Mount Rushmore” was a concept to an Englishman and South Africans. That said, I like the question. Starting with the World Cup winning captains is perfect, and there are so many fantastic players in SA history (Habana, Matfield, PSDT, Montgomery, Kolbe, Marx, just in the years since I’ve been following the Springboks closely) that giving that fourth spot on Table Mountain to Rassie feels like the right call….Actually, having been both to Mount Rushmore and Table Mountain, I’m not sure I’d want to do anything to change that iconic landmark. I’d seek out a more remote piece of real estate somewhere closely associated with the origins of South African rugby that, like Rushmore, stands out but is not easy to find, so visiting it would be a proper rugby pilgrimage.
@interestedbystander196Ай бұрын
Agreed. Table Mountain is Cape Town, and it represents so much for the country (it all started there). It is far more than rugby, and it is perfect as it is. Find a spot near Stellenbosch, it you want to stay in the Cape, or go to one of the mountains in the escarpment, to combine the coast and the highveld. Interesting idea, though.

Rassie Erasmus is the most absolute coach South Africa has ever had. How I wish SA could focus in giving much attention to talent development across all races in the land so that a man of Rassie Erasmus calibre could have a wider pool of talent to shine for our country. It is not his job to bring about transformation in rugby. His is to shine available talent at national level that the grassroots development has picked and prepared. Great show Tim 🎉!

What about players like Frik du Preez (lock), Divan Serfontein (scrum-half), Carel du Plessis and Ray Mordt (wingers)? The last three were from the great Springbok 80s team, where Danie Gerber and other greats like Johan Heunis also played in. Yes, they didn't play as many games as they should've, but they still had a great record v the Lions and All Blacks (two series if you include the Cavaliers and they also beat, Ireland, England, France and Argentina (labelled as South America). As for Frik, he was chosen best Springbok player of last century and was the record cap holder at one stage. An absolute beast in the line-out who's incredible strength and speed with ball-in-hand, made him a try threat as well.

Tim go and watch a KZbin video called maestro of the midfield about Danie Gerber. In my eyes. The greatest 13 of all time. 1986 NZ sent a rebel team to play us here. With the exception of John Kirwan. It was the team that won the 1987 RWC. 4 test matches , we won the series 3 to 1 and the one we lost was by 1 point. I have no doubt that, that team would have won the cup. In 1992, Ellispark Gerber made Frank Bunce and Walter Little look like club players and he was 34 years old then. All I can say is , go and research and be amazed!!

Very nice program, well done. I have seen a video of Cristian Cullen and 2 off Cheslin Kolbe. I do not think if you could compile the same of those mentioned including Du Pont, you could equal Cullen and Kolbe (on playing ability only). Dr Danie Craven said if you could have a Springbok side, all backs coloured and black people and the forwards all whites, nobody would beat SA. Fassi, Kolbe, Am, Willemse, Arendse, F-Mngomezulu, Williams. In the forwards you could add Beast, Bongi, Ox, Siya. Add Eben, Mostert, P-Steph, D Vermeulen.. Quite a formidable side.

Tim - great questions and insights as well. Especially asking about Bismark du Plessis being a better player than John Smit - which he absolutely was. Hence trying to turn Smit into a prop (unsuccessfully), which then affected Smit’s ability to be a good captain (as was always under pressure and giving away penalties). Not many people talk about that - so - great call doing so on a popular platform like Egg chasers.
