What an awesome competition. 3 winners from 3 countries in 3 years. What does the URC have in store for 2024/25? My thoughts team by team, my predicted playoff qualifiers and some potential breakout youngsters.

I feel the URC is growing in quality rugby every time a new season starts. Because of the competition's structure, the trainers and owners are looking for talent, trying to buy in new talent every year, and somehow accumulating the cream of the crop, making rugby exciting and fun to look forward to.

The fact that the URC has been won by 3 different from 3 different countries (with 2 away wins in the finals) over the last 3 years makes it the most vibrant, exciting and most unpredictable tournament in the rugby fraternity...yes even moreso than the Champions Cup which is won more or less by the same teams and easy to predict the finalists and winners

The champions cup has gone to the dogs . I remember in the mid 2000s when there was jeopardy in the group stages of basically every group . Munster wasps Leinster Toulouse Leicester really had to fight like hell to top their groups and get a home quarter final and one of them would usually fail to make the knockouts yearly.

Massive Lions supporter and it can be really tough sometimes, as soon as I get really excited about a player he gets bought by one of the other SA teams (looking at you 🦈 👀😂). Just hope we can keep this team together and build on the momentum from the Currie Cup and make the playoffs this year.

@chris5240 I suppose so, only difference I'd say is that Nohamba was struggling for game time and Marius is very good but not necessarily game breaking. It's normally our top players, who are crucial to our game, that get poached, like the Tshituka brothers. It's a professional sport so no hard feeling but it does suck sometimes. It does make it extra special when we have a run like 2015-2018 though, taking our band of unwanted players and doing something special. I wait in hope🙏

Historically playing for the Lions isn't a road to Springbok colours, Bulls and Stormers have the politics on their side. This hasn't changed. Look how long it took for Faf to get national colours, he had to shine overseas first. When he was playing at his his best, he was stuck with playing for the Lions only. This isn't new. As an old Transvaal supporter I've seen this playing off since childhood. We've had our excellent players poached many times though. Bryan Habana springs to mind.

Just need Henco to stay injury free so that he hopefully gets a chance at the Boks...if someone poaches him I am going to cry😭

@@pietbliksem Yeah, the Sharks needed players in those specific positions -especially Hendrikse. It makes sense too, he went to school in DBN and his brother is there already. We needed Manu as Kolisi had been sold, and George Cronje had been out for a year (double knee surgery back to back). The reason the Sharks have had the transfer power is because they are the best run club in SA (from marketing, to backroom deals, social media and facilities). They need to be as there are not as many feeder schools because rural KZN teens have little access to proper rugby (kit, fields, refs, coaches, etc.). Sharks do have a top-tier academy though, so if any young players make it, they will be able to become true professionals. These days you need to play proper rugby all the way through high school if you want to be a pro.

The Sharks willl go all the way this season. Last season they lacked a competent 10. Back in 2016, we were told that Curwin Bosch was the next Flyhalf messiah and the Sharks put all their faith in him. For some reason, it just didn't work out. He just couldn't get that back line going. Remember last year how things changed for the Sharks once Siya Masuku came in. All of a sudden, the ball was moving and they were scoring some fantastic tries. With Jordan Hendrickse coming in, the competition for the 10 jersey will just push them on. And in the forwards, they are stacked. The Tshituka brothers, Venter, Kolisi, Buthelezi and a number of exciting young talents coming through, Mavasere, Hlekani, Hatton. And those are just the loosies. Among the props, Mchunu, Nyakane, Nche, Koch, and Etzebeth and Jenkins in the locks, complemented by Hugo and Rahl... And I'm not even going to go into the backs. Plum has had a year to work with this team and he's going to get them playing. I'm calling it now, the Sharks will go all the way.

For Connacht, Josh Ioane could be a big signing, out outhalfs have been a big issue for the last couple of years. Hugh gavin is a big prospect, has been tearing it up for the Irosh u20s at IC, Santiago Cordero is like a new signing as well - only played a couple of games last year after getting long term injury in his 1st week in the country.

As a South African and Bulls fan I recon the Irish giants will again be very strong. The absence of Internationals will play a role but the cream always rises to the top. I would be wary of the Lions - if they could travel better and get some crucial rsults away from home they will be around come semi final stage. The brand of rugby they are playing is brilliant and if they could repilcate that in icy Europe through Dec - Feb - watch out!

Being a Dragons fan, I'm expecting the worst and hoping we finish higher. Finishing 10th is a major success for us this season considering we've consistently finished in the 14th/15th/16th slot. What looks like success? Beating Cardiff, losing no more than two games at home. Breakthrough players for us I think Harri Ackerman in the centre and potentially Brodie Coghlan in the front row. Beating ospreys on the opening game is crucial for us.

@@jlsimonable Hi! Hope you are doing well. IMO, its growth; Better attendance and better viewership numbers year on year so far, much bigger than it ever was. Also, competetiveness. Last season, 10 teams could crack the top 8 with 1 round to go, and the top 4 was also highly contested right to the end. 3 different winners from 3 different countries, 2 of which were away. And the log leader hasn't won it yet. For me, its showing the most potential to catching the Top 14 which is obviously the benchmark. I am curious, which tournament do you think is growing the best? RSA being in the URC is like making peace after the Anglo Boer War in a sense. Saffa myself, German at most, quarter French and quarter Northern Irish, realised Bulls not my only team, I adopted Ulster in the URC and still making up my my mind with the complicated Frenc, since having the knox inflluence of French blood flowing thhrough my veins

The Lions are the new Cheetahs with their players being offered contracts at other unions. Excited to see them in the Currie Cup final tomorrow they really play a beautiful brand of rugby! I think Nohamba is going to Stormers. But somehow they just manage to find players whoever is doing their scouting is doing a great job. Lions players to keep an eye on obviously Henco can Wyk and then Renzo du Plessis, Rabz Maxwane and Bronson Mills.

This will come down to depth again, for those teams playing in two competitions you will defintitly see a "home" side and a "touring" side. It´s unfortunate but also looking at the longer term picture, it really builds squads of +40 players that can get it done. Short term annoyance for long term benefit.

I think the URC will be unpredictable and brilliant this year. Hard to disagree with your top 10 but in what order. Watch out for Jamie Dobie finally getting a run at 9 at Glasgow and Ben Muncaster at Edinburgh

I think the traveling can be a good thing because this will force teams to build squad depth & manage player health better, I think this is also something that SA teams have learned with Super Rugby & traveling to NZ & Aus... & gives them a slight edge when traveling because the other teams have not had to travel as much in the past. I also think we will see more new/breakout players because of it.

After we lost the jaguares there were talks that we could end up joining the urc and if I'm honest, I'd much rather take that than super rugby, even if we have to base our teams in Spain and/or Italy, we have enough people in both countries to pack a stadium anyway

Leinster being the major contributors to the Irish team feels like its the root cause of their falling at the final hurdle. Like cut it whatever way you want, everyone would agree leinster are the best team in the competition. And to lose out at the final hurdle so frequently has to have a reason and i reckon its cos they are too stretched cos' they are propping up the bulk of the international side. So for leinster to be more competitive ironically, they need the other 3 provinces to be more competitive and provide more players to the national team. Strange balance there.

Good overview, and it should be an interesting season with any of half a dozen teams that could win it all, and also contend with the French sides for Champions Cup silverware. Too bad there aren’t enough European sides to have a promotion/relegation setup (add a couple Georgian, Portuguese and Spanish teams maybe?). This could finally give a proper home to the Cheetahs, who seem to be in such a weird place, playing Currie Cup footie and the Challenge Cup, but don’t have a regular international-level senior competition to play in.

To make the playoffs - you have to be committed to winning every game. Edinburgh won 11 from 18 last season, and didn't make it because of one bad loss at home to Treviso. The Sharks cannot be selective in their away games, and expect to get anywhere by winning at home. The difference between Glasgow finishing 1st vs 4th was one underperformance against the Lions (Hardly a week side) AWAY.

URC only becomes interesting in the latter stages IMO. You're not seeing the best players week in week out or have many old rivalries. I've no skin in the game, no team allegiance just a rugby fan. Leinsters approach to the URC backfiring has been pretty entertaining given the outcome, the Glasgow story was compelling.

As a Stormers fan, I think you are overrating us, Tim. I worry that the backups and rookies are Zebre/Dragons/Scarlets level. Maybe I’m wrong and those players just took it easy during the Currie Cup, but it is a worry that they just aren’t any good. I’d have the Sharks and Stormers swapped in your chart and Glasgow vs Munster for a top 4 spot is too tight to call.

I think the team is more balanced this year, there isn't a big gulf without the Boks and if we make it to the knockout stages the experience of the Boks will be invaluable

It’s based on regions and areas. I believe Wales would be better served with 3 or even 2 but politics is involved. With Ireland it’s easy as we have 4 provinces

I wonder if there is a way to include the premiership teams in the URC, add in a few extra SA teams, like cheetahs, Pumas, maybe some other teams from the current nations (if there are any) and have 2 leagues with promotion and relegation. The URC would be epic if we could replace some of the lower performing teams with some of the better premiership teams. Could also help with the schedule and shorten the season of we have, say, only 12 teams in the top league.

I think Wales should join the English premiership. Make that league 14 teams. Add the Cheetas to the URC & scrap the pools in the league. 13 teams play a round robin tournament. 6 home and 6 away games. Top 4 play for URC championship trophy. Top 6 team qualify for Championship cup. Fewer games are higher consequence are better in my opinion. Also less travel and smaller squads lowers teams costs.

12 games? You do realise that would absolutely tank revenue across the league, right? 😂 It’s already bad enough in the Premiership that they have to scramble a whole bunch of friendlies to fill in all the gaps and try to stay afloat. Successful leagues have a lot of games - the Top 14 has 26 games before the play offs. Fine with Welsh teams leaving though: they’re always moaning about wanting to go, and don’t add much, so let them go and enjoy the Premiership.

I'm pretty sure it is just temporary, as he is just too good to leave out of the CC team (he has the speed to play wing, but the size of a flank). I think it is good experience for him though, if he can play multiple positions. Rassie will appreciate that for sure 😅
