Cape Town is quite different from Jo'burg and Durban, Tim. Cape Town is the laid back, cool, rich cousin you only see during the holidays. Jo'burg is, well, Jo'burg - a beautiful mess. Durban is more of an in-between; not as laid back as Cape Town but also not as wild as Jo'burg.

"Impi", the 1981 song by Johnny Clegg & Juluka, references the Battle of Isandlwana in 1879, the the first major encounter between British and Zulu forces in the Anglo-Zulu War in South Africa. "Impi! wo 'nans' impi iyeza Obani bengathinta amabhubesi?" Impi=war or fight wo 'nansi' = oh! here it is iyeza=it's coming Obani=who? bengathinta=can touch amabhubesi=lions So, ironically perhaps for Tim, the Boks are called the lions on match day 😅

Springbokkies have travelled the world. After the 2007 RWC Final, which we watched at the iconic Elephant & Castle pub in Guangzhou, China where we were living at the time, my wife bought them for the entire pub. I can’t recall, for obvious reasons, what the ingredients were but Peppermint Liquer was certainly not available. The game started at 3am local time and dawn had long since arrived when we were eventually tossed out of the pub. This prompted said wife to invite the remaining crowd to our apartment for bacon and eggs. I managed to beg, borrow and steal sufficient ingredients to serve to the assembly of South Africans, Aussies, Kiwis, English, Samoans and one guy from Fiji. Needless to say my booze cabinet was totally empty.

What you may have noticed in CPT compared to the other cities is the volume of Afrikaans slang, and the volume of singing even Rassie said, CPT sings even when you losing. The crowd keeps singing. Because most of the boys would have grown up with these singing war cries and motivational chants, it is encouraging to them and you can see it, even afterwards during Siya's post match on field speech and the way the crowd responded. So good.

I wish you could have been at a packed Newlands stadium when the WP, Stormers or Springboks played. Cape Town stadium doesn't come near it. I have been at both stadiums when they were full but the atmosphere and the noise at Newlands were just something else. Maybe it's because the Cape Town stadium is actually built for soccer and Newlands for rugby. The pavilions of rugby stadiums are built a lot more upright than soccer stadiums. So you sit much closer to the field.
