I'm pretty sure my first encounter was in the early 60's. I was born in 55 so it may have been earlier.

Never heard of that. Sounds great though. Made me wonder what "buttering" toast with the roux itself (before milk) would be like. Might have to try that. Wonder if you can make a roux with margarine. If not, maybe that's why we never had it as kids.
