Great sounding band! No offence but, you need a really good singer. The singing in this band doesn't match the playing.

I mean, the singing rarely matched the Dead's playing abilities, too, especially in the later years lol. For whatever reason it is something that is pretty common in the jam scene for a band to have a less-than-perfect singer. I would wager this is because many of the people who end up singing lead in a jam band are first and foremost instrumentalists who have mainly honed their skills on their instrument and only started singing out of necessity. I can personally attest to that as my own band went through many singers who just didn't get the whole jam band thing. After trying to deal with like three different guys who were all just singing without an instrument, I just ended up saying, "screw it, I guess I'm going to have to do the singing," and started taking on that role along with my guitar playing. I have done some singing before, but it was nowhere near the level of my guitar playing, and I'm sure there are a ton of other people in jam bands who have been through the exact same situation. To me, that seems like it is the main culprit for causing this phenomenon. There aren't too many jam bands with singers as good as their playing, but it definitely "works" for some bands. Let's face it: jam bands like this are never going to be commercially popular anyway, and the jam scene fans don't really seem to mind singing that isn't technically the best when the instrumental abilities are so good, so what does it really matter at the end of the day? I also think this band as a four-piece has a great balance where they're able to turn those corners really fast in a jam and stay 100% locked in with each other at all times. Also keep in mind that it really isn't feasible for a jam band to have just a dedicated, no-instrument-playing singer. If they did, he'd just end up standing on stage doing nothing for half the show if he wasn't playing another instrument of his own lol. So, adding in a singer/what would probably be a rhythm guitarist into this group would mess with the flow and balance of things. They are instrumentally perfect, which makes up for any lack of singing ability (which I honestly don't think is bad at all) in my book.

Sounds damn good to me... GOOD SONG WRITING IS WHAT THE DEAD HAD GOING and that got lost with Phish... I hate the goofy gimmick (Pigeons..ect) I really like this band so far

@@evertking1 phish gimmicks are pretty funny sometimes though lol. And come on man, the musical greatness of Phish more than makes up for the one or two gimmicky songs you might hear at a Phish show. They’re first and foremost prodigious instrumentalists. If you’ve gotten turned off from them because you’ve only heard their more gimmicky songs, I highly recommend digging in a little deeper. Like, 90% of their stuff isn’t gimmicky and there is a ton of great jams you’re missing out on.
