Plus all the times I would actually go out to a troth it turned out to just be a pretentious barbecue with overweight LARPers; my time is more valuable than that

From the top of my head I remember more details then this guy telling us. During his early life Egill became to be pariah in his neighbourhood. He would get in games with everyone and then argue about smallest things and fighting with everyone. So eventually no one wanted to play with him. So his only hope was on annual meeting "Thing", to find companion from other places. His parents forbade him to go, but he go anyway. Egill join in a game drunk, started argueing and eventually been told off. After that he return home for the axe, split the head of much older boy and started a big fight between clans. Several people were killed. Obviously his father being strong viking warrior protected son's life. But things were closed to Egill. And future in Iceland was bleak. Were ever he would go, he was risking to meet angry opponents, wishing his death. And he also got bad reputation nationwide. His mother told him that she would get him a ship so he could be a viking. Basically viking life was considered criminal, but if they going to Europe, then it's okey to bring some gold back. So Egill run away with his brother and became to be rich. To much typing, just read saga yourself

Mmm,Egil seems like a wild,strong,,powerful person of er 8 or 9th century.He seems to have been head strong but also helped many people.But still a vikinger killer & poss.berserker.His poetry has made his infamy recorded to now very much like Japan's Musashi who also wrote & painted.I see both of these great warriors who killed many people as somehow memorable.The sorceress of Odin was similar to the Druids who were anniliated by the Romans.They worshipped the trees just like the Runic people.

Like Óðinns response to RalpAlpha's comment states there has been allot of archilogical evidence excavated that proofs, as much as any historical evidence can proof, his existence. There is probably not a single Icelander that doubts Egils existence. We are tought that he is a historical figure not a semimythological one like Ragnar Loðbrók.

Thats cool, i read the saga's and wondered who i was related to, as i'm from the first settlers of Iceland too. Turns out, according to Icelandic roots. I'm related to the Olafsons in the Laxdaela Saga, From Harald Wartooth's kin, Ketil Flat-Nose, Unn The DeepMinded, Melkorka/Kjartan, Snorri Sturluson, Thorstein The Red and King Olaf of Scotland, all related. In the Laxdaela Saga, Egil Skallagrimon's grand daughter married into that Laxdaela family.. I figured all this stuff out from reading the Saga's and simply using wikipedia to follow the predecessors of King Harald Wartooth. In Egil's Saga, they say that King Olaf of Scotland was Scottish on his dads side and Norwegian on her mom's side, from Ketil Flat-Nose's kin. He as well as Ragnar Lothbrok, are related to Harald Wartooth. Ketil died in Scotland (No he never stepped foot in Iceland, his children did. Don't watch that Viking show on fake history channel.) During this time his grandson, Thorstein the Red, took to raiding Scotland and made a truce, became King for about 2 weeks before treacherously being killed. That is how i know i'm related to King Olaf of Scotland, who was the King at war with Aethlestan in the latter part of Egil's saga. After Thorstein's death, they went to Iceland, Unn married off Thorstein's daughter's in the Orkney's, Hebrides, Shetland and Faroe islands, from them, the descendants of Dukes and Earls

@motordude675 жыл бұрын
Egil in norse means something like "respect/honour/swords edge". Back then, boys were named after their father, so Egils father was Grim, hence Grimsson. The norse used lots of nicknames, and "skalla" means "bald", even today, in Norwegian. So Egils father was called Grim the Bald or Skalla Grim. So putting it all together Egil "the son of Grim the bald" or Egil Skallagrimsson.
