There are many tales on individual Viking warriors, but today I will tell you about the legends who were in the Jomsvikings order.
The Jomsvikings were a legendary order of Viking Mercenaries who lived in the 10th and 11th century. They were well known around Scandinavia for their Pagan worship of Odin and Thor and their incredible fighting abilities. However, as mercenaries they would fight for any lord or King no matter their religion, as long as they were paid handsomely. The Jomsvikings first appear in the history books in the 12th and 13th century Icelandic Sagas. These sagas were written at least 100 years after the disbanding of the Jomsvikings so it is difficult to assure the accuracy of the writings.
Sources: The Jomsviking Saga, The Kings’ sagas, King Olaf Tryggvasson’s saga, The Knytlinga Saga and the tale of Strybjorn the Swedish champion.

Harald Bluetooth and his son, Sweyn Forkbeard, betrayed Styrbjorn Jarl at the Battle of Fyrisvellir. Styrbjorn was heir to the throne of Sweden, but his uncle, Erikr, would not give up the throne. After Styrbjorn and the Jomsvikings made shore, Styrbjorn set fire to his ships to send a message. The message being that there is no retreat. They would have victory or death. Once Harald saw this bold yet reckless act, he and Sweyn had their forces retreat. Styrbjorn Jarl fell in battle and his uncle would then be known as 'Erikr the Victorious'.

It may have been a Jomsviking satellite trading town where their women lived as no women were allowed in Jomsborg. All the graves in the settlement were boat burials of high ranking women. Palnatoke. I think that you should pronounce the e in the end of Palnatoke. Don't assume that it is a modern name or word from English but based from the north Germanic one. The E should probably be pronounced like the first E in Everglade. Not pronouncing the e is like not saying the last d in David. Thanks for a great video though.

Interesting... The bigger the story is the bigger... Pomeranian Slavs that had their capital Stettin just 50km from Jomsborg (Wolin) 😁 Jomsvikings were just allowed to live at Jomsborg trade port. Slavs didn't give a f**k and slashed and burned Norse capital Kanungahela pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitwa_o_Konungahel%C4%99 It looks like probably a revenge for destroying "their" Vikings. As a Swede I don't know why you change the names to a English version. I don't care if you pronounce it wrong but its kind of disrespectful in my opinion to change their names. For example you say "Canut" It's Knut without the A. You could just not say the A and you would say it right. And Thorkell is Torkel. And so on... Also if you need help with how to pronounce names and places I'll be glad to help.

@@historyprofiles Not sure if you have been to the Nordics but both Norway and Sweden has a clear and proud lineage to their Viking past. Mostly Norway to be fair, they use the old names. Many of the provinces like Trondelag (Trond Law similar to Dane Law) are names that are still around today, gods are mentioned, food traditions and words are kept the same. While Denmark went full on Christianity and harped and larped on that stuff. There is a video that mentions the Danish Inquisition of Iceland (their colony) where they burnt Astru elders for sorcery at the sake similar gruesome stuff as Spanish inqusition. I will send you a great video on it. Basically the Danes destroyed the Viking age and they more or less see the middle ages as a natural progression.

@@TantricBioHacker I have never visited yet! But I am planning too! Yes studying the time the Norsemen were pagans long after the Danes converted. I did a video on Olaf haraldsson and how his spread of Christianity nearly ruined Norway… killing the upland kings after promising he wouldn’t act like Olaf trygvasson but lied and did. Norway had a very chaotic history after the death of fairhair and most of it is down to Christinity and the barbarick ways the kings such as the two Olaf’s tried to enforce… but yes I would love to visit trondelag, the viken and the uplands! It is a legend or history, judge for yourselves. In times of Nordic wars were born the wolves of comvate-berjast við úlfa-a warrior lodge at the service of the highest bidder, was a warrior elite similar to the berserkir but more refined and religious followed the ancient Scandinavian gods and a bariant imported respect for the Móðir- Jörð, these Vikings could give the image of the helmet with horns as some used them as an attribute to the goat clear allusion to his masculinity. When more peaceful times came, the rulers wanted their dissolution because Christianity came and they hated and killed them, lacking resources they gave themselves to banditry and the Scandinavian kings condemned them, seeing their extinction they fled to Iceland with 26 ships, In Iceland they were not allowed to disembark, and being left with no other choice, they went westward and discovered a land called TULAND, today East Greenland. They listened to and learned from the natives of INUIT, whose religion was a variant of the Móðir-Jörð, and became very skilled in sinkings. But they kept bothering the Scandinavians, plundering their ships and coasts in search of food, silver and women, the Scandinavian kings searched hard for them and finally found them in TULAND, and they were imprisoned for 20 years on those coasts and then put to death, the kings said they would kill anyone who wrote about the Vikings in TULAND. Can the Yamsburg vikings be RUS vikings? In Russia we have town with the same name, Yamburg. It is likely that Yomsvikings were partly Obodrites slavic, Rus, and partly Danish, Sweedish, Norwegian entity. Just as knights of Templar were not exclusively frankish, rather it was a brotherhood of Christian Latin faith, Yomsvikings were on the other hand a pagan brotherhood, The area was at crossroads of all scandinavian tribes mentioned above.

Well done sir, informative and very entertaining, thanks for that! Palnatoki, pronounced Pallnatokee, was a exceptional figure in the nordic saga because his preferred weapon due his reputation was the bow and no northman liked the killing from the distance really. A man had to face his enemy on a shield length. Many of the tales around the Jomsvikings are even just tales and some theories suggest that the real Norseman looked down on the Jomsvikings with disgust at their heritage out of Baltic and Slavonic tribes in the lower ranks. Nobody knows when the term Viking was used in the first time but for sure not then . Harald Bluetooth took over the trust in christianity after missionaries cured his toothache. Wollin, the city where Joms was ,was declared by the Soviets 1945 to the GDR means Eastern Germany but Poland occupied it against Stalin...Best regards from Northern Germany Ludwig.

Another great video. I'm with The Jomsvikings Reenactment Society and this video fits really with what we know about the Jomvikings from the sagas. I'm not a "Jomsviking" but part of The Army Jomsborg., The Jomsvikings are our 'Officers' (to use a modern term). I'm a Free Drengr with The Army Jomsborg. They use the code of the Jomsvikings to test each new member who comes from the Army or "Storms". Kit, knowledge of the Sagas and Runes is of a very high standard for Jomsvikings. The Combat Test is really tough. I know people who have failed the test, sometimes more than once, eventually passing to become Jomsvikings. Safety is our number one concern so you have to be highly skilled even in Stage Combat to become one. I haven't been to Wolin yet but the standards are very high too. To a certain degree, even the part of no women in the Fortress. Women are allowed into the Fortress at Wolin but not allowed to fight. We do have a lot of women fighters in the Army of Jomsborg but they are not allowed to fight at Wolin. The codes of Brotherhood are very important and taken very seriously. Once again, great job with the video.

I love all this stuff, tales of battle, legendary warriors doing impossible things, 12 year olds raiding among full grown men. Its all mentle and entertaining. The vikings didn't half know how to tell a tale

A dead tooth, maybe? His real name was Harald Gormsson, after his father Gorm. The story goes that the tooth also gave him a terrible ache. We had a priest back home we called Lars Threefinger, but his real name was Lars Rye...
